00:03<dakka>that you mentiong it*
00:03<Baygon>well my exim is up and running
00:03<dakka>Natman, i think u need to install the yaboot (never heard of that, i use grub) on the /boot partition
00:03<Baygon>pfiou, next step coupling it with mysql database to have virtual users
00:04<dakka>usually thats sda1
00:04<Natman>I chose only to create one partition
00:04<Natman>I believe
00:04<dakka>i think it will make several anyways, like the swap
00:04<Baygon>how many os do you have installed natman ?
00:04<Baygon>just Win + Deb ?
00:05<Natman>It's a Mac Mini
00:05-!-tjader [~tjader@] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:05<dakka>so maybe u will have 2 sda1 for / and sda2 for /swap (or something)
00:05<Natman>I want to only have Deb
00:05<Baygon>ah ok so os x + deb
00:05<Natman>so I chose to use the whole hard drive. os x erased

00:51<dakka>I dont use that (not even sure how to use
00:52<dakka>my swap is set for 28gb at the moment (installer did that)
00:52<dakka>yea massive right?
00:52<bdog7>I manually set mine to 2Gb
00:52<dakka>i never see it used, i always wonder why the installer made it so large
00:52<sney>I think it just guesses a percentage of the disk
00:53<dakka>ah i see
00:53<sney>but anyway you don't need to do anything special to add ram
00:53<dakka>well i dont use much of my disk, i use my NAS for most things
00:53<dakka>ah ok cool! I mis judged how much ram i needed, forgot how much web browsers take up
00:53<Jeriko>Both RAM sticks have to be equally 16GB
00:53<sney>no they don't and/or that depends on the motherboard and configuration etc
00:53<dakka>I am ok about the hardware, was just the OS wasnt sure about
00:54<dakka>I will crack open my PC and check what it is, then go buy what i need
00:54<dakka>might think about reducing that swap partition one day just for the hell of
00:54<dakka>thanks for the info, off to get ram!

04:34<whatnow8>sney, could be. can you tell me if there's a similar program to archive manager that i can use to extract .rar files?
04:35<sney>I would just use unrar, from the terminal
04:36<whatnow8>ok. i am not used to terminal but i guess i'd have to learn.
04:36<sney>iirc the syntax is 'unrar x whatever.rar'
04:37<sney>it is a good skill to have if you use linux a lot, though.

04:38<whatnow8>sney, another question if you don't mind. is usb 3 unstable in debian? i think i have the latest version, yet, when i plugged in an external hard drive to the usb 3 port, i couldn't eject it. it'd always remount again.
04:39<sney>I'd guess that's your desktop environment trying to be too clever
04:40-!-tjader [~tjader@] has joined #debian
04:40<sney>handy trick: if you run 'sync' from a terminal, you can unplug any external drive once you see another prompt.
04:40<whatnow8>have you run into that problem before?
04:40-!-AzaToth [] has joined #debian
04:41<sney>not that I remember offhand, but usb3 drivers would be handled separately from anything trying to automount
04:41<whatnow8>sney, thanks for that tip.
04:41-!-br3n [] has joined #debian
04:41<sney>'sync' synchronizes any cached disk writes, which is all eject does that matters, really
04:42<whatnow8>sney, just curious. have you used ubuntu before?
04:44<sney>I have a package in debian that is also in ubuntu. so I use it occasionally, but not often enough to be very familiar with it
04:44<whatnow8>i also noticed that i can't copy file to any folder other than Home in debian, unlike in ubuntu which lets me copy the file to practically anywhere.
04:44<dpkg>Before asking in here or on the <debian-user> mailing list, you should read the Installation Guide, or if you already have Debian installed, the Debian Reference. The Debian Administrator's Handbook is also good. Ask me about <ig>, <overview>, <reference>, <refcard>, <docs>, <manuals>, <fundamentals>, <newbiedoc>, <faq>, <unix lessons>, <general cli tutorial>, <debian-handbook> (e.g. in your IRC client, type /msg dpkg reference).
04:44<whatnow8>i find that baffling.
04:44<sney>learn permissions and the FHS and understand them. this is not windows.
04:45-!-budsmumbling [~budsmumbl@] has joined #debian
04:45<sney>as root, you can put any file anywhere, like on a windows desktop, more or less. but linux comes from different roots and keeps that sort of separation for good reasons. again, things that are good to know if you use linux a lot
04:46-!-budsmumbling [~budsmumbl@] has quit []
04:48<whatnow8>ok. if it's not too much trouble, could you explain how to copy a file from Downloads folder to Document folder?
04:51-!-cyphase1 [] has joined #debian
04:52<sney>cp Downloads/whateverfile Documents/
04:52<whatnow8>in ubuntu, i could just highlight the file, right click it and specify where it's being copied to.
04:52<sney>but within your home directory you should be able to copy anything anywhere.
04:52<sney>under /home/whatnow8 or whatever it really is
04:53<whatnow8>ok, guess i'd have to use terminal to accomplish it.
04:53<sney>you might not have to but it's the answers I have at 3am on a friday night, heh
04:54<sney>if gnome is giving you too much hassle there are other desktop options. choices are the best thing about debian. :)
04:54<sney>nothing is integrated "better" and it's all pretty much stock. use what you like.
04:55<whatnow8>what other option is there? can you give me an example?
04:56<sney>I've been using kde regularly for the past ~3 years. xfce is also quite popular
04:57<sney>cinnamon is apparently also available in debian 8

07:51<Brigo>bluesky, if the other system is behind a router, you have to configure the router to redirect port 22 to the computer ip.
07:51<Brigo>the remote router to the remote computer, i meant.
07:52<dakka>ya port forwarding would work
07:52<Brigo>when you do ssh remote_ip you are trying to do ssh to the router (who owns that ip)
07:53<bluesky>i know this way, but it is difficult

19:40<SynrG>never heard of this issue. normally you would only see that if you had something in /etc/fstab

19:41<SynrG>so something is automounting at boot?
19:41<manicnerd>yes, it's a WD my book and is mounted when the user (my brother) logs in

19:42<manicnerd>this is the 3rd machine (mine, my parent's, and my brother's) that I've used a USB drive to install on and this is the only machine with the issue- and it's any USB drive, not just the my book

23:14<tonyyarusso>sleser: There are some updates that need a reboot, but it's rare for it to really be *required*. For instance, any new kernel is going to need a reboot to take effect, but the consequences of running the previous one for another six months are usually nil.
