00:04<Laogeodritt>gah
00:04<Laogeodritt>any idea why the debian installer would shutoff suddenly in the middle of setting up my partitions?
00:05<Laogeodritt>using the stretch alpha1 netinstall iso on a bootable usb key

00:12<paxmark9>Laogeodritt check md5 If using a cd-rom and not a flash drive "random" might suggest the cd-rom drive is to blame. Did you use "cp" "dd" or unetbootin to install .iso if to flash drive?
00:12-!-joelkraehemann [~joelkraeh@178.197.232.252] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:13<Laogeodritt>paxmark9: using flash drive only, installer says it's loading from "CD-ROM" though. I used win32diskimager from Win7 to write the iso to the drive (I don't have any non-VM linux machines here)

01:17<sleser>is it safe to overclock a computer processor ?
01:19<kklimonda>sleser: moderately safe, as long as you have some understanding what you are doing
01:20<kklimonda>(some motherboards even provider "1-click overclock" solutions)
01:20<sleser>im not sure if my mother board suports it

01:22<sleser>my bios is fixed to 3.45 mhz
01:22<kklimonda>you should read about that more then
01:22<sleser>bios wont let me change it
01:23<kklimonda>some CPUs are easier to overclock than others, some motherboards have better support for overclocking
01:23<sleser>you have any good website i can read ?

01:23<kklimonda>what cpu do you have?
01:23<sleser>intel
01:24<sleser>whats the linux command to chek it ?
01:24<kklimonda>and the model?
01:24<sleser>dual core
01:24<kklimonda>grep "model name" /proc/cpuinfo
01:24<kklimonda>but if your knowledge is limited to "dual core intel" then it may not be worth the risk :)

01:25<sleser>no good ?
01:26<kklimonda>I don't think it "supports" overclocking (some CPUs are sold with their multipliers unlocked, so you can overclock them up to a point easily)
01:26-!-libregeekingkid [~libregeek@183.87.106.126] has joined #debian
01:26<kklimonda>so you'd have to do it old and hard way, which is riskier

01:28<kklimonda>also, its architecture doesn't help it - they tend to generate more heat, and overclocking will make it more prominent

01:30<sleser>i just want a strong fast running machine
01:30<sleser>so it runs everything fast and the games
01:30<sleser>like heavy games like ps3 or 4 games
01:30<sleser>maby even heavyer
01:30<sleser>a computer with strong roots
01:31<sleser>basicaly a computer should last 10 years
01:31<sleser>at least
01:32<jm_>sleser: please ask somewhere more appropriate, i.e. ##hardware on irc.freenode.net, unless it's strictly debian related
01:32<sleser>sorry
01:32<sleser>ok guys
01:33<vush>does jessie have a dhcp server built in? for the hotspot feature?
01:34<vush>when I connect it won't get a valid ip
01:36<kklimonda>vush: it doesn't, but the software you use for settin up a hotspot should have something
01:36<vush>the hotspot is there by default

01:37<vush>under the network settings
01:37<kklimonda>it could be a feature of gnome, kde or whatever you are using
01:38<kklimonda>if so, it should provide its own dhcp server (probably based on dnsmasq) and if it's not working, then it may the that it's not configured correctly - I've always found hotspot feature of network manager reather spotty
01:39-!-twb [~twb@203.7.155.119] has joined #debian
01:39<vush>ok, just trying to figure it outcan you help me use another method?
01:39<twb>In jessie is "locales" still a thing that does some/all of the locale setup? Because I saw some systemd manpages yesterday that suggest *it* can/is in charge of that now
01:40<twb>And I see to have Red Hat-style "en_AU.utf8" locale instead of Debian-style "en_AU.UTF-8", even after purging, reinstalling and reconfiguring the locales package --- which still mentions en_AU.UTF-8.
01:40<kklimonda>vush: not really, my experience with creating hotspots is limited to just pressing buttons and hoping they'll do something

03:23<Laogeodritt>Regarding my earlier issue: I've determined that the debian installer can get to installing the base image, asking me about the kernel then the initramfs (chose generic), and then it will suddenly reboot without getting to the end of the progress bar (it will show a console output, last few lines are "System is going down NOW!", SIGTERM then SIGKILL, etc., typical shutdown sequence, no log to show why). If I try to rerun it, it will choke up
03:23<Laogeodritt>at loading components off the drive (the "CD-ROM").

03:24<Laogeodritt>I've tried the debian stretch alpha1 netinstall and debian 8.1.0 netinstall, to the same effect. This is loaded onto a 1GB USB flash drive using win32diskimager (don't have a non-virtual linux box available).
03:24<Laogeodritt>Anyone here have any ideas/suggestions?
03:25<twb>Laogeodritt: your first test was with the jessie installer?
03:25<twb>testing installer often breaks; stable installer should work
03:25<jm_>Laogeodritt: have you checked if there are any errors reported by the kernel? you can do this on tty2
03:26<Laogeodritt>twb: tried stretch first, 8.1.0 subsequently. Reformatted all LVM partitions between each one, but now that you mention it, the one primary partition that's created I never touched when I tried 8.1.0
03:26<jm_>and yeah, why do you want to use alpha1? you should be able to debug such things on your own if you want to use alpha1
03:26<twb>Laogeodritt: please test with stable (jessie) install media
03:27<twb>Laogeodritt: if you want to install stretch, you can either install jessie then upgrade, or do an expert install
03:27<twb>The most reliable method is "install stable, then upgrade to testing"
03:28<twb>Oops, I got confused. 8.1.0 = jessie :-)
03:28<Laogeodritt>twb: currently trying with 8.1.0/jessie stable media, as mentioned; same result. Though come to think of it, I never touch the primary partition, I would always only format the LVMs again each attempt
03:28<Laogeodritt>think that'd affect the installer's success that far in?
03:29<twb>Did you use this URL? If not, which did you use? http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/8.1.0/multi-arch/iso-cd/debian-8.1.0-amd64-i386-netinst.iso
03:29<Laogeodritt>and yeah, I mostly wanted to avoid the upgrade to testing bit, but it's less of a hassle than this install issue is ;P

05:50<twb>nfsv3 can use TCP, and I think I'm doing so, but it can't for *all* parts of itself IIRC
05:51<twb>In the first paste, you can clearly see the problem is systemd is trying to run mount.nfs before rpc.statd is running
05:51<twb>rpc.statd is started in /etc/init.d/nfs-common which becomes /run/systemd/generator.late/nfs-common.service

06:11<dakka>I was using kde before, but i couldnt fix my issue, so i am on lxde now. There is no applete for redshift, so i thought i could just use a script and a link from my desktop to the script
