01:38<Infiltrator>df reports that /var is 12G used; but du /var reports only 6.4G used. lsof /var shows only a few files in /var/cache/fontconfig opened by gnome-*, none of which exceed 6 digits (I assume that the sizes are in bytes, so they're all less than 1M). Where on earth is the extra 5.6G gone?

02:15<Infiltrator>twb: A delayed thanks for your help with LVM the other day, by the way. You left before I could say so.
02:15<ijurisic>any can help with mate desktop, I have strange situation http://tinyurl.com/naqlg4t
02:16<twb>Infiltrator: I am surprised by your issue, but it could be pathological with largefiles4 profile or large reserved percentage
02:16<Infiltrator>http://paste.debian.net/287439/
02:17<twb>ok 4kiB blocks, is the default
02:17<twb>And reserved block count indicates about 1GiB is reserved for root user
02:18<twb>(i.e. when "empty", if that filesystem has 100GiB in it, df will report 99GiB available because 1GiB is reserved.)
02:18<twb>Infiltrator: the other thing to check is to compare du with du --apparent-size
02:18<twb>Infiltrator: but usually that would have du overreport the size (because of sparse files), rather than under

02:19<twb>Infiltrator: it could also be that you have something mounted *under* /var, which is hiding some of it. e.g. you have 6GiB of /var/log in /var filesytsem, and that's hidden by your separate /var/log filesystem.
02:19<twb>You can check that by doing mount --bind /var /mnt/umount-me and then du /mnt/umount-me

02:21<Infiltrator>twb: du --apparent-size shows /var at 6.7G.
02:22<Infiltrator>And mount | grep var shows only LVM-var mounted on /var.
02:23<Infiltrator>The binding trick also shows 6.7G, so it's the same.

02:24<Infiltrator>twb: I got one: I'm an idiot. :P
02:24<Infiltrator>I did lsof without sudo, so it showed only my files.
02:24<twb>Maybe try rsync -aHSX /var/ /mnt/delete-me/ and then check /mnt/delete-me's size

04:18<GeneralK>Howdy. I have a Debian box setup as a gateway on my network. This gateway runs an OpenVPN client that forwards all my internal traffic out through the VPN. Today I have been trying to setup an OpenVPN server on the same box so that I can connect to it remotely, access my network & all of my internet traffic will also be routed out through the established VPN on the gateway. So far it's all
04:18<GeneralK>setup and working fine when I test it internally, but when I try to connect to my gateway's VPN server from outside my network it fails to connect. I can see the initial TLS packet in the server's log file but then the handshake times out. I think it must be a firewalling issue? This is my iptables config file: http://paste.debian.net/287465/

14:40<Laogeodritt>The Linux kernel is initiating a thermal shutdown (critical temp = 100°C) on my laptop whenever core 0 gets to 83°C (old AMD-based laptop that tends to run very hot—just cleaned + new thermal paste, 85-90°C under load on Windows was typical). I'm logging sensors every 10 seconds, and I doubt temp truly jumped 20°C within 1-10 seconds. Any idea what might be going on / how to debug this? 4.0 and 3.16 kernel are affected

14:42<jhutchins>Laogeodritt: Something's getting a different reading - looking at a different sensor or mapping it differently. I would suspect the BIOS, but it sounds like the kernel is getting the shutdown signal, not the BIOS.

14:49<Laogeodritt>jhutchins: lm_sensors hasn't managed to detect any other sensors. There's a kernel log in the syslog that states the shutdown reason (and it points out thermal_zone0 explicitly, which I logged at 83°C via cat /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone0_temp) and seems to do a graceful halt, so yes, kernel seems to be in control.

20:20<sney>unity is an ubuntu product only. so if you want to use unity, you use ubuntu
20:20<sney>(there have been some attempts to put it in debian... no progress)
20:20<mulletdeath>And I can't for the life of me figure out a way to make KDE, gnome 3 or anything more like unity
20:20<sney>it's pretty custom built
20:21<mulletdeath>Hmm..
20:22<mulletdeath>Okay, I have a more important question about installing the latest NVIDIA propietary.

20:23<mulletdeath>It asks me to check the PATH or some such, and I don't really know what it wants of me
20:23<sney>the nvidia installer steps on a lot of debian components and tends to break stuff especially if you upgrade later
