02:51<twb>sameerynho: ah yeah. So there is #emacs (freenode) and there is #debian-mentors (OFTC).
02:51<twb>The latter deals with making debian packages
02:52<twb>Obviously debian already has stable emacs package, and there are/where "snapshot" debs which #emacs will know about, if they still exist
02:53<sameerynho>twb: it seems they exist
02:53<twb>Many emacs people use emacs' own infrastructure to install third-party libraries, but I don't like it because there's no repo signing yet. For personal use, I wouldn't bother making debs of small elisp libraries, I'd just install them in ~/.emacs.d/lisp/

03:03<Glanzmann>Hello; I have Debian Jessie x64 on my laptop. Everytime I boot I see a filesystem check. A friend of mine told me that this was a bug in a previous jessie version, but it should now be fixed. I have all updates installed as of this morning. Any suggestions how to resolve the issue?
03:04<twb>Glanzmann: do you know the ticket number that your friend was talking about?

03:06<twb>Glanzmann: what I would expect is, every boot it should check to see if a fsck is needed. Then, *sometimes* do a fsck. Are you seeing it do a "full" fsck each time?
03:07<Glanzmann>I have a SSD with NVMe and 1.2 GB TP/s
03:07<Glanzmann>So it is pretty quick but yes, I see the fsck every time I boot.
03:07<Glanzmann>Should I do a screenshot and post it here?
03:08<twb>No, I believe you :-)
03:08-!-markus-k [~mkstn@designnet.work.de] has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
03:08<twb>You can if you want, but first please pastebin the contents of /etc/fstab, and if you are using ext, the output of "tune2fs -l" on your filesystem
03:08-!-markus-k [~mkstn@designnet.work.de] has joined #debian
03:09<twb>The fsck log used to go to a dedicated file in /var/log, but I'm not sure if that's still the case. If you can find the output of/around the fsck part, it would be good to pastebin that too.
03:09<Glanzmann>fstab: https://pbot.rmdir.de/IgAKN8w7WCqZuK7yUm5xxQ tune2f -l: https://pbot.rmdir.de/7jxWuA8wShLThqB2iEKXGg
03:09<Glanzmann>twb: Is it the '1' in /etc/fstab?
03:09<twb>The 1 there means that you want fsck to happen regularly
03:10<twb>But it doesn't mean to do a full fsck on every boot
03:10-!-verbalins [~Drezil@9S0AAC3EX.tor-irc.dnsbl.oftc.net] has quit []
03:10<Glanzmann>I see.
03:10<twb>In tune2fs there are two options to force a fsck after every N days, and after every N mounts
03:10<twb>"Maximum mount count: -1" looks suspicious to me. That might mean "disable this feature" or it might just be wrong
03:11<twb>Ah, tune2fs manpage says -1 means disabled, so that's fine
03:11<twb>And the check_interval 0 also means disabled.
03:12<twb>Another common cause would be not shutting down properly, so that every boot the filesystem goes "uhoh, unclean shutdown, better fsck!"
03:12<Glanzmann>I use 'halt' and 'reboot' to shutdown.
03:12<twb>But for that we need to find the fsck logs.
03:12<Glanzmann>So no poweroff or sysrq.
03:12-!-talby [~mm@132.212-142-164.dynamic.clientes.euskaltel.es] has joined #debian
03:12<twb>Glanzmann: those *should* be fine
03:13<twb>Although under systemd I think you are supposed to run "poweroff" not "halt", because unlike wheezy, "halt" will not cut the power :-)
03:13<twb>"poweroff" is fine as long as you don't pass -f (force) which bypasses the clean shutdown
03:13<jamesmc>Yeah, that was fun to learn on remote servers ;)
03:13<twb>jamesmc: yesssss :-/
03:13<Glanzmann>twb: I deinstalled systemd.

03:14<twb>Glanzmann: ah OK, that is a big change so please mention that first next time (if you did, I missed it, sorry.)
03:14<Glanzmann>No, I did not mention it.
03:14<Glanzmann>Will do next time.
03:14<twb>So anyway please look in / for touchfiles like /forcefsck and also look in /var/log for fsck logs -- we need to see if fsck is unhappy
03:15<Glanzmann>Already did. / is clean. The only unclean file system references I find in /var/log is about a usb stick: https://pbot.rmdir.de/K-JvqbM7fUrL7X9u2Wfkhg
03:15<twb>Do you have /var/log/fsck ?
03:16<twb>At least as at the sysvinit in debian 7, that should exist as a directory; early boot creates /var/log/fsck/checkroot and .../checkfs
03:16<Glanzmann>I do: https://pbot.rmdir.de/UNN-BdvOwkZuiivtYTsp3w
03:16<twb>If the dir doesn't exist or rootfs isn't writable, it hangs around as a background process
03:17<twb>Aha OK so the issue looks like your clock

03:17<twb>I see you had a windows filesystem -- are you dual-booting?
03:17<Glanzmann>Yes, I do.
03:17<Glanzmann>Hardware clock is local timezone as a result.
03:17<twb>When you installed debian, did you say "set the hardware clock to UTC" ?
03:17<twb>OK
03:17<Glanzmann>But let me double check. But my clock is right.
03:18<twb>Maybe debian-installer only sets that for systemd in debian 8, and you switching to sysvinit undid that change?

05:31<Des>good morning to all
05:33<Des>I'm trying to use my on board sound card 5.1 with simple stereo speaker somebody knows how to switch to stereo and disable 5.1 channels?
05:34<petn-randall>Des: starting 'alsamixer' and switching off a few knobs should do it.
05:35<Des>It's not so simple I need to play system audio in stereo not 5.1
05:36<Des>in alsamixer there is not options on channels
05:37<Des>If I connect headphones on frontal jack port
05:37<Des>I can hear sounds correctly
05:37<Des>but on rear port the output is only for FRONT speaker
05:37<Des>so I lose all other frequencies
05:38<Des>I have found some forums help that say to disable the upmix
05:39<Des>but seems to refer to outdatet file config
05:39<Des>outdated*
05:39<gruetzkopf>which desktop (if any) are you using?
05:39<cmacq2>You don't have to do anything. Just plug in a standard cable and wire it up to the speakers
05:40<Des>xfce
05:40<cmacq2>stereo sound is encoded over a single wire, and decoded on the receiving end

05:41<gruetzkopf>stereo sound is sent over three conductors in a single cable (for analog stereo, which he is obviously using)
05:41<Des>the problem is the upmix
05:41<cmacq2>gruetzkopf: a single analog output encodes multiple channels, it really does. lookup jack design
05:41<gruetzkopf>are you using pulseaudio
05:41<Des>but I don't know how to disable it
05:41<Des>alsa
05:41<Des>I don't know how to check if pulse are running
05:41<cmacq2>yeah and the 3 conductors can be converted to RCA if you need it using a hw adapter
05:41<gruetzkopf>naah, its just using analog switches to change the jack around between multiple DAC pair
05:42<gruetzkopf>at least for the usual suspects (hda codecs)
05:42<gruetzkopf>so you can set the jack function
05:42<cmacq2>okay, let me retry:
05:42<cmacq2>a jack has a few paths besides GND
05:43<cmacq2>simple off the shelf desktop speakers accept a similar jack as input
05:43<cmacq2>and split the signal paths
05:43<cmacq2>one is routed to the L speaker
05:43<cmacq2>and the other to the R speaker
05:44<cmacq2>now if you have wall mounted speakers it might be that you need to split the signals using a hw adapter
05:44<gruetzkopf>yes, but he is not having a stereo problem, but a 5.1 problem. all sound should be coming out of one jack instead of three for his speaker setup
05:44<cmacq2>to convert standard 3.5mm jack to RCA
05:44<cmacq2>point is in a 5.1 analog output setup
05:44<Des>cmacq2: I have put my stereo speakers on the rear green port and I can hear only frontal speakers frequencies
05:44<cmacq2>the front is actually stereo L+R
05:44<gruetzkopf>1* stereo instead of 3* stereo
05:44<cmacq2>or should be
05:44<cmacq2>so if your speaker doesn'
05:45<cmacq2>t do splitting
05:45<cmacq2>what you get is that it has either L or R signal
05:45<cmacq2>so you miss one
05:45<cmacq2>3* stereo isn't an issue (per se)
05:45<cmacq2>because you don't need the other 2
05:46<cmacq2>if all you have/want is just the front L + R
05:46<Des>are you saying that my problem is not channels but surround options?
05:47<gruetzkopf>well, if 5.1 is enabled and you have an application playing back 5.1 audio (like vlc playing back a movie) you miss back channels, center and sub, which is usually mixed into L+R if you are using only 2 speakers

11:37<ml|>Hello, is it still ok, to install a testing or sid kernel on a stable system. Ie. download the .deb and install it manually? Having resume issues and want to see if a newer kernel fixes this.
11:37<ml|>Or even an older kernel, grabbing the .deb from s.d.o?
11:37<ml|>Basically here is my issue... https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=76131
11:38<centrx>ml|, Better to use backports

11:39<dpkg>First, check for a backport on <debian-backports>. If unavailable: 1) Add a deb-src line for sid (not a deb line!); ask me about <deb-src sid> 2) enable debian-backports (see <bdo>) 3) aptitude update; aptitude install build-essential; aptitude build-dep packagename; apt-get -b source packagename; 4) install the resultant debs. To change compilation options, see <package recompile>; for versions newer than sid see <uupdate>.
11:39<ml|>*ATM
11:39<centrx>ml|, I would do the source-backport as described by the bot above

11:41<centrx>ml|, right, I did
11:41<centrx>ml|, source-backport is the next best option
11:42<ml|>Haricophile: Yes, that is another option using debian's kernel config.
