02:04<mrfy> Hi ppls, when adding aliases to bashrc can i execute multiple commands aimed at a random variable that the alias would execute? And if so how do u add a variable? Also can further commands be added to run after the variable ...all in the same alias?? Tnks in advance. Eg... alias locate='updatedb && locate "whatever im searching for" | more'. Oh and is that the correct way to join sequential commands ----ie with && ?

06:17<dpkg>xorg can use files ending in the suffix .conf in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d for additional configuration. It is preferred to use an <empty xorg.conf> and create files (e.g. 20-nvidia.conf, 20-radeon.conf, 20-wacom.conf) there in order to configure a single device. You might have to create the directory yourself (mkdir /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d). See also "man 5 xorg.conf".

19:01<dooglus>[...] the minimal CD image is better — [...] you only download the packages that you selected for installation [...], which saves [...] bandwidth. On the other hand, the full CDs are more suitable when installing on [...] machines without a free Internet connection

21:36<agaida>https://packages.qa.debian.org/v/vlc.html
21:37<agaida>i would suggest apt install vlc and be done with it
21:38<scootergrisen>That installs 2.2.0
21:39<agaida>bah, sorry - nice effect it the browser wrap a testing version to stable :P
21:40<agaida>and you don't want the newest version of vlc - if you want current versions stable might be a bad idea
21:40<jmcnaught>scootergrisen: on Debian Stable the versions for packages generally don't change, the updates are for security and bug fixes, and occasionally new features are backported. A newer version of VLC might eventually become available in jessie-backports though
21:40-!-CrF_ [~CrF@ssv10-3-88-173-2-231.fbx.proxad.net] has joined #debian
21:40<scootergrisen>I have tried jessie-backports but that is also 2.2.0
21:41<jmcnaught>scootergrisen: a new version *might* eventually make it to jessie-backports
21:41<agaida>thats the nature of stabel - the versions are stable and reliable - aka dead
21:42<jmcnaught>aka no surprises
21:42<scootergrisen>Can't i install the unstable VLC?
21:42<agaida>also true
21:42<agaida>scootergrisen: Why you run stable?
21:43<scootergrisen>I dont know. Just installed Debian
21:43-!-brunoramos [~brunoramo@212.66.74.242] has joined #debian
21:44<jmcnaught>scootergrisen: installing packages from testing or unstable on a stable system will usually result in a full or partial upgrade to testing or unstable, so not a good idea
21:44<agaida>so i suggest reading about testing and sid - and after some thoughts about i would eventually change to testing or sid. But i would think twice. And i wouldn't recommend the switch right now
21:45<jmcnaught>scootergrisen: the big advange to the versions being stable in stable are that your system keeps working the same day to day without having to reconfigure stuff for new versions, or work around bugs that get introduced. Stable is what you want to use if you need to use your computer for stuff other than playing with Debian
21:45<agaida>and mixing releases isn't the best of all ideas, as jmcnaught wrote

21:46<scootergrisen>Its because i want to test my translation in the newest VLC
21:46<jmcnaught>scootergrisen: also i think it's a good idea to learn Debian on Stable.. sometimes stuff is not even installable on testing or unstable, and for a beginner it can be hard to tell soemtimes if you're making a mistake or if the packages are just broken
21:47<jmcnaught>scootergrisen: if you want to test newer versions, one option is to install testing or unstable in a virtual machine or a container
21:48-!-CrF [~CrF@ssv10-3-88-173-2-231.fbx.proxad.net] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
21:48<scootergrisen>Do i need new partions for that?
21:48<agaida>and the time is now - we are in a libstdc++6 transition - so i have doubts that sid will be upgradable without to much losses
21:49<jmcnaught>scootergrisen: no if you use something like virt-manager or virtualbox the virtual machine's disks can be image files stored on an existing partition
21:49<scootergrisen>What can i use virtual machine or container?
21:50<scootergrisen>Ok so i just download a testing iso fil?
21:51<agaida>use virtual box, take the latest testing iso with your preferred DE and install it in the VM - done for the moment
21:51<jmcnaught>scootergrisen: yeah, or use a stable iso and then upgrade it in the VM once you've installed

21:57<scootergrisen>Do i really have to download several GB?
21:57<scootergrisen>Which one is good just for testing?
21:58<jmcnaught>scootergrisen: personally i would use the stable netinst and install a minimal system, upgrade it to testing or unstable, then install a desktop environment and VLC

22:00<jmcnaught>scootergrisen: if you find yourself using VMs for testing quite a bit, virt-manager, virtualbox and others have ways to clone/snapshot VMs. You could also use someting like apt-cacher-ng on your LAN to speed up downloads of packages

22:05<jmcnaught>scootergrisen: that won't have the newer VLC that you want, and unless you install you won't be able to upgrade to testing or unstable. Installing from an installer image is probably better than installing from a live image
22:05<scootergrisen>Do i select testing during the Debian installation or how do i select that i want to use testing?
