02:01<twb>kvm is a part of your CPU that makes virtual machines (VMs) work better.
02:01<Raku>Yes
02:01<Raku>And its not booting past that message
02:01<medicalwei>Raku: it means you cannot use virtualization function from CPU.
02:01<twb>You can (probably) turn it on in your bios config.
02:01<Raku>I dont care about it
02:02<Raku>The reason im mentioning it
02:02<twb>It doesn't mean that's what breaks your boot, it just means that's the last thing that worked
02:02<Raku>Ah
02:02<Raku>Ok
02:02<jm_>is this a boot without the quiet boot option?
02:02<twb>FSVO worked --> load the kvm driver, complain that kvm is disabled by BIOS, then (probably) keep booting.
02:02<twb>Good question.
02:03<twb>Raku: try booting with "quiet" and "splash" removed. If there is still to much output, try loglevel=4 or so to hide *some* of it but not all
02:03<Raku>Alright
02:03<Raku>Ill also see if i can do anything about turning on kvm, see if that makes any difference
02:04<twb>+1 I don't think there's any downside to having KVM enabled

02:05<Raku>Under advanced processor options in bios, theres a "intel virtualization technology" option thats disabled, would that be it?

02:52<somiaj>hmm, almost sounds like the problem isn't the xserver but gnome/cinnimon can't handel the graphics drivers you are using. Might need to use a small de or wm
02:52<Raku>Or just none at all
02:52<jm_>have you looked in ~/.xsession-errors?
02:52<somiaj>yea if you don't really need xserver, don't use it
02:53<Raku>jm_: checking now
02:54<Raku>"Openconnection: connect: no such file or directory"
02:54<Raku>And then, "cannot connect britty at :0"
02:55<somiaj>but xorg log looks fine, so I would put the culprit at the desktop/de you are using. With an older card things based off of gnome3 may not work (hence cinnomon)
02:55<Raku>I didnt actually install cinnamon though
02:56<Raku>Well, whatever it is, i'll tackle it tomorrow, its rather late here
02:56<Raku>Thanks for all the help though, i appreciate you all being so patient with me :P
02:56<somiaj>I thought that was the desktop you said you installed, not sure which one it is, but that is where the issue seems to be
02:57<Raku>In the software select i attempted to and accidentally hit enter
02:57<Raku>I only had the debian desktop environment installed
02:57<Raku>So i assume i have gnom
02:57<Raku>Gnome*
02:57<somiaj>gnome in jessie won't run on that older card.
02:58<Raku>Theres the answer then :P

04:38<r6ku>there is no preferred way on how to use debian however
04:38<babilen>bagginsDK: I would install the base system (only standard task) and then install either the "gnome-core" metapackage after the initial boot or 'gnome-session gdm3 network-manager-gnome' -- You don't have to reinstall though. Just run "apt-get install gnome-session gdm3 network-manager-gnome" now and mark *other* packages that are being removed as manually installed with "apt-mark manual $PKG"

04:44<r6ku>bagginsDK: just go with the defaults and install your own stuff on top, that's the easiest way. if you want something lighter then take a look at what the other desktop environments have to offer, for example in xfce you can uninstall some of the stuff that gets installed by default like libreoffice, vlc and gimp without messing anything up.

If you run "apt-get install gnome-session gdm3 network-manager-gnome" you will, at least, never remove the gnome-session by mistake and you can take it from there. 04:48<bagginsDK>I might keep the system as it is, because i want to do some work on it, instead of making work
04:48<babilen>bagginsDK: Well, nothing forces you to remove anything .. I simply strive for a minimal system and start with the most minimal set of packages possible to which I add what I miss.
04:49<babilen>Either way: You can configure tracker to not index everything. That being said: it really shouldn't interfere with other processes and should (in the best of all worlds) simply use whatever ressources are not being used to perform its indexing. Also: The initial indexing step might be over in due course, investigate with tracker-control
04:49<bagginsDK>babilen, we are in the same side, as i am the greatest fan of minimalism, but i have never faced something like this before.
04:49<babilen>tracker is handy to have if you want to search all your files and perform actions on them

10:08<rarebird>hello, I tried installing to the USB stick from the live image and everything went fine but after reboot I can't boot from the stick. the installer asks if I would like to install grub to the MBR of the first hard disk but I don't want that, instead I want to install it only on the usb stick. however, that option does not work. what can I do?
