00:29<TheLastOfUs>How do I mount an ENTIRE directory with multiple directories using cifs
00:29<TheLastOfUs>rather than mounting a directory and EACH folder inside of that directory
00:30<TheLastOfUs>like mount -t cifs //192.0.0.0/
00:30<TheLastOfUs>as opposed to 192.0.0.0/*specific folder name only*
00:30<TheLastOfUs>?
00:31<somiaj>TheLastOfUs: since each directory could contain different permisions, I don't think it is possible unless the server shares its root as its own share.
00:32<TheLastOfUs>ah...well on windows..i can access the small 2-hard drive nas and all the folders just fine.
00:32<somiaj>I'm not positive on this, I haven't seen such an option and think due to teh way different shares can have different permissions it would not be possible. Though you may be able to write/find a script that will mount each one one at a time.
00:32<TheLastOfUs>but linux doesn't have it like thati t seems?
00:32<TheLastOfUs>in windows all i do is go under "network" and then the NAS name - boom all folders
00:33<TheLastOfUs>i guess its just automated in windows in terms of mounting
00:33<somiaj>TheLastOfUs: what do you mean 'on windows', does the server share its whole second drive?
00:33<TheLastOfUs>I mean im using windows
00:33<TheLastOfUs>the linux box is seperate
00:33<TheLastOfUs>in windows i can usually access a network location with all shared folders
00:33<TheLastOfUs>right away
00:33<somiaj>It could depend on the server, have you double checked all the shares you see using smbclient on linux, it could be the whole drive is a share you can mount.
00:34<TheLastOfUs>im using cifs
00:34<TheLastOfUs>or something. smbclient my box does not have
00:34<somiaj>well windows doesn't mount it more 'browses' so the thing you are seeing is probabaly just a list of all the shares, but they are not mounted until you click on them
00:35<TheLastOfUs>right. i guess what i wanted is say have 1 folder - and inside many folders from the network share NAS
00:35<somiaj>It could be there is a linux file system with a smb plugin that would act similarly, but as per the command line you have to actually do the mounting.
00:35<TheLastOfUs>so my NAS is sharing 5 folders
00:35<TheLastOfUs>and i wanteed it so if i made a folder in linux of my NAS name
00:35<TheLastOfUs>and hopefully it showed all 5 folders
00:35<TheLastOfUs>but yet i only see its necessary to mount each one seperately
00:35<somiaj>yea windows explorer is probabaly 'hidding' everything from you, so really nothing is mounted, but it is showing you all possible shares. Windows won't actually access the share until you click on it and it is mounted at that time.
00:35<TheLastOfUs>ah okay
00:35<TheLastOfUs>wow..cool system then haha
00:36<somiaj>this is the file manager, have you tried nautilus or any modern file manager, I think they have smb plugins that will act very similarly
00:36<somiaj>you ahve the same info in liux, but note listing the shares and mounting the shares are two different things.
00:36<TheLastOfUs>my linux box is headless
00:36<TheLastOfUs>so i cant use file managers
00:36<somiaj>But as I said it could be possible to write a script (or a script could already be written) that will systemitacally mount all shares, but most will just mount the ones they want.
00:37<TheLastOfUs>yeah...seems easier.

01:00<TheLastOfUs>i have a question
01:00<TheLastOfUs>is the debian networking mainframe in terms of thoroughput on the ethernet port of a PC weaker than that of something like windows?
01:00<TheLastOfUs>Example if i wish to send files to a network mounted source - would it be slower on the same connection
01:00<TheLastOfUs>vs a PC that isnt debian?
01:00<jm_>no
01:01<TheLastOfUs>hrm wow okay someone told me linux had weak networking capabilities
01:01<TheLastOfUs>speed wise
01:04<Guest1534>TheLastOfUs: most of the fastest computer networks in the world are linux. it is windows that doesn't perform well in my experience (speed-wise)
01:08<TheLastOfUs>does CPU have anything to do with speed?
01:08<TheLastOfUs>I'm trying to write to a network drive with the raspberry pi at the moment
01:08<TheLastOfUs>and its fairly slow
01:09<TheLastOfUs>2.8 MB/s

01:09<TheLastOfUs>my PC does it on average at 5 MB/s :/
01:11<jm_>older raspberry pi-s are apparently slow network wise, but 5MB/s is slow even for a 15 years old PC
01:11<somiaj>TheLastOfUs: are you using raspbian? If so you are in the wrong place for support and you should use their channel. As for your issue, it could be a lot of things. If you are using a usb wifi card, the usb 2 bus is fairly slow on top of maybe the wifi card and drivers may not be that good (i.e. more a factor of the hardware you are using than linux in general)
01:11<TheLastOfUs>no wi-fi ethernet port
01:11<TheLastOfUs>directly
01:12<TheLastOfUs>100Mbps down/up
01:12<TheLastOfUs>and im not using raspbian

01:12<somiaj>TheLastOfUs: Have you checked dmesg to ensure that you are connected at 100Mbps not not 10 (usually cards can do both). Might be some issue with the drivers.

01:41<TheLastOfUs>sigh
01:41<TheLastOfUs>so does anyone know why a linux box would test at half of its upload speed to the internet?
01:41<somiaj>though I imagine using /msg dpkg ssb and making your own backport would be fairly straight forward, kernels are usually self contained.
01:42<TheLastOfUs>Upload: 48.79 Mbit/s (should be 80ish)
01:42<somiaj>TheLastOfUs: the hardware (maybe driver) combination. It isn't an factor of linux, it is a factor of the raspberry pi. You might want to look into the actual driver version you are using for the network driver on the pi.
01:42<TheLastOfUs>how would i find that driver version?
01:42<TheLastOfUs>im unsure :(
01:43<somiaj>that is a factor of the kernel, first I would figure out the chipset the network card is using then look up info on that.
01:43<TheLastOfUs>a lot of people are claiming their pi 2's easily do 95 Mbit/s
01:43<jm_>really, test its LAN speed first

01:53<twb>But the bottom line is: right now, to use a post-3.16 kernel on jessie, you gotta enable stretch, or backport it yourself. Correct?
01:55<somiaj>I'm not seeing a backport on b.d.o, though not sure why it was removed if it was ever there. It does look like 4.0 migrated into stretch on 7-15, so judd may be slightly out of date as it is still saying 3.16 is in streetch

10:59<Blacker47>if you use opensource driver, try the native propritary driver (from debian repository). that could help because opensource driver may fail at powermanagemernt.
11:00<Blacker47>i belive the opensource driver for amd gpus on jessie should handle power management correct, but maybe it works not for all cards.
11:00<bagginsDK>Blacker47, my card is not supported from propietary drivers.
11:02<bagginsDK>Blacker47, how can i change power management profile of gallium? In fedora can be done, but i am not sure on Debian.
11:02<Blacker47>gallium is what?
11:03<r6ku>bagginsDK: http://www.x.org/wiki/RadeonFeature/#index3h2

11:04<Blacker47>what i have used i time ago for radeon hd 6xxx card. without '#' of course.
11:05<LordShadowWing>What some people think they need is an Active Driectory Server thet provides DHCP, DNS, WSUS, File sharing, Print sharing, RIS, and IRC
11:05<Blacker47>and i had have to set it to high or mid by hand to have good acceleration. this was pre-jessie time.

16:08<Benjaminhusky>the issue im experiencing is that on this series of laptops, specifically the Latitude E6420,the wireless doee not work in the Debian Live cd image, and i am looking for a way to solve that issue
16:10<Benjaminhusky>i would assume that it is the specific model of Wireless chipset included with these systems that is causing problems
16:12<thomasross>r6ku: ok, manually editing Xorg.conf made more resolutions available, but 1920x1080 is still not present
16:12<r6ku>Benjaminhusky: the live image doesn't come with non-free firmware, for most wireless cards you need to install those
16:12<Benjaminhusky>r6ku,okay,thank you
16:13<thomasross>The max resolution is now 1024x768

18:22<somiaj>uso: in wheezy backports came usually fairly quickly after the kernel hit stretch. I don't think there is much to do except build the packages since kernels are fairly self contained, but there is no timeline or anything.
18:22<somiaj>It could be that after 4.1 is in stretch for a few days a backport is made

20:52<kerimke>hello, I don't know if I'm in the wright channel but I have some questions about git-buildpackage.
20:53<kerimke>what is the prefered workflow to create a package where I am both the packager and upstream ?
20:54<themill>This is a bit like asking vi vs emacs... but logically separating your upstream and packaging activities is best.
20:54<themill>So you have a branch in which you do upstream development and has no debian/ directory and then you merge that into a packaging branch where it is only things inside the debian/ directory that are changed.
20:56<themill>Remember that you still need an upstream source tarball to actually build/upload the package, so tag, tarball, merge.
20:57<kerimke>Ok. I already separated upstream from master like you suggested but I am a little lost on the tagging.
20:58<themill>I know some maintainers have both upstream development and packaging in the same git repo and they can then take advantage of git cherry-pick to grab hold of patches and bring them into the package, but I don't have any packages where I've done that
20:58<kerimke>Should I just tag my upstream like usual and then merge to master and tag with gpb buildpackage --git-tag ?
20:59<themill>that command is for building not for importing the upstream source -- you might do better finding someone who has this workflow in #debian-mentors
21:02<kerimke>Yes I know. I wanted to emulate the tagging of gbp import-orig where you have one tag for upstream (upstream/*) and one tag for the package (debian/*).

21:06<themill>I don't know if people are doing the upstream/* tagging and merging manually or if they are using some tool to do it. gbp-import-orig has a «--upstream-vcs-tag=tag_name» option that I think is used in this
21:06-!-jgbraga [~smuxi@186.231.139.137] has joined #debian
21:06<themill>the debian/* tagging is done with "gbp buildpackage --git-tag" as part of the package building step

21:09<kerimke>The doc is not clear on the subject. The examples also use pristine-tar but some threads on the mailing list report delta corruptions and it seems unmaintained.
21:10<kerimke>I will ask on #debian-mentors. Thank you themill.
21:11<themill>kerimke: you wouldn't do that at the build step, that's for git-import-orig

22:08<kerimke>After reading packages from git.debian.org it seems like when upstream and the packager is the same person, nobody bothers creating two branches to separate anything.
22:09<kerimke>Now if you want to you simply write your software, tag the first release and create an upstream branch from master.
22:09<kerimke>You then add your debian package into master and commit your changes.
22:10<kerimke>You run git-buildpackage and if it runs then you re-run it with --git-tag.
22:11<kerimke>Concerning "upstream-tag", it is only used if no tarball is found in your package parent directory and it will you the specified tag to recreate an archive.
22:11<kerimke>The gbp man page and online documentation is pretty bad at explaining all of this...
22:13<kerimke>And most of what I said doesn't make sense... I'm tired.
