01:21<rsmith>looking for the right software to allow students to upload their programming projects to my linode server. It should have a web client for doing the uploads. Any suggestions?
01:21<bittin->FireFTP?
01:23<rsmith>Thanks! I'm not sure if I can get a Firefox addon on the school computers.
01:23<rsmith>I'll check.
01:23<LadyAlissa>rsmith: There's gitlab or whatever but I haven't used it
01:23<LadyAlissa>and it's git, not a web interface.
01:24<LadyAlissa>However, git is installable on almost any platform, including Windows, OS X, and Linux.

01:24<rsmith>I need something in a browser which works on locked-down campus computers
01:24<LadyAlissa>Hm, for that, no idea then.
01:27<rsmith>LadyAlissa: thanks for the suggestion. I *might* be able to convince the tech guy to install something on the lap computers
01:28<LadyAlissa>Which OS?
01:28<rsmith>Windows clients
01:28<themill>you almost need something like ikiwiki or owncloud on the server to accept the uploads
01:29<rsmith>The server is mine, a linode with Debian.
01:29<rsmith>Is the Gitlab client a browser plugin?
01:29<LadyAlissa>I thought it was a web interface.
01:29<rsmith>Oh! Then it will likely work
01:29<rsmith>I'll have to read the docs! Thanks!!!
01:29<LadyAlissa>Alright
01:30<LadyAlissa>And you can stick a personal Git client on a flash drive or whatever
01:30<rsmith>OK

01:35<appas>uh, am i missing something or are you not already serving web pages via some httpd? why not webforms for the upload?
01:35<themill>Don't over-complicate the class with a pile of technology that's orthogonal to the learning outcomes you're actually wanting to achieve. It might be that just uploading a zip file to a web form is all you really want to do. Or have them email it to you.
01:37<appas>exactly. KISS (keep it simple, smartie)
01:40<themill>If learning git is one of the things you want them to do then that's great too, but that needs to be embedded into your activities early on.
01:41<rsmith>I won't teach them Git, but if it is possible to upload without learning Git, then OK
01:42<rsmith>Is webforms a project, or a phrase for general http input forms?
01:43<rsmith>Doing a "input=file" in a form is complicated on the server
01:44<rsmith>I'd love something like RStudio (which I use in statistics class), so I might even use it

01:47<appas>humm... email attachments might be problematic, if the project size is > a couple of megs per submission, due to outgoing mail server confs...
01:47<appas>but yeah, i was referring to your run-of-the-mill html forms. why's file input via those a problem?
01:49<rsmith>appas: getting the character encoding right, and all the other stuff which a non-web developer like myself would never think of
01:50<rsmith>unless these is a nice free application for it
01:52<appas>i know next to nothing about web stuff, too, but what's character encoding got to do with it, if you submit say a zip file?

01:53<rsmith>appas: you're right, but the last time I did CGI-like stuff was in the 1990s, and hated it. I'm just looking for the quick and dirty, but I may just end up doing it anyway.
01:53<wompa>rsmith, isn't your school using some sort of course management system?
01:54<rsmith>wompa: Yes, Moodle, which I despise. I hate it on my own servers too.
01:55<bittin->the school i go too is also using Moodle, but the school i work at is using propiatary shit Schoolsoft :p
01:55<rsmith>We actually pay riduculous money for Moodle hosting, and last semester they did upgrades (during the semester) which screwed it all up.
