05:10<appas>don't use ubuntu pps's with debian, just use dd.
05:10<dpkg>When you get random packages from random repositories, mix multiple releases of Debian, or mix Debian and derived distributions, you have a mess. There's no way anyone can support this "distribution of Frankenstein" and #debian certainly doesn't want to even try. See if you can convince ##linux to help.

13:21<PEB>/tmp is better as a tmpfs

13:22<PEB>a separated /var is useful if you intend to have many users on your machine, and you think allowing them some write acls in /var or if your machine logs a lot of things
13:22<PEB>(to avoid having a full / because of logging/random writes from your users)
13:23<aeb> /tmp *may* be better as a tmpfs. so long as all your tmp files fit into half your RAM.

13:28<PEB>aeb: except if you use the full disk, but that is not recommended
13:28<PEB>I don't know if debian installer allows that
13:28<aeb>PEB: yeah, I was just about to write that
13:29<PEB>anyway it seems better to have your physical volume on a partition
13:29<serotonintuna>i used full disk for the laptop im on right now :D
13:29<PEB>how did you install grub ?
13:29<serotonintuna>i dunno

13:30<serotonintuna>since im not dual booting on this machine
13:30<serotonintuna>only my desktop
13:30<PEB>so you probably did not use the full disk, but a partition mostly the size of the full disk
13:30<PEB>(less 1MB plus the /boot)
13:30<serotonintuna>yeah probably
13:30<aeb>full disk for LVM is dangerous in that other installers or boot images may not recognize it and treat it like an empty disk. partitioning only loses you a few MB at most, so it's hardly worth it to avoid.

14:16<jmcnaught>serotonintuna: it might help if you read some background info about LVM. One of the big advantages to using it is you can grow/shrink volumes easier than you can partitions. If all of your volumes are in the same volume group it'll be easier. Later on you can add another phyiscal volume (aka a drive) to the volume group, and use the new space to expand the logical volumes (like /home, swap etc)

23:12<fallore>i marked a package for complete removal in the synaptic package manager, thinking it was a kind of "full uninstall" since i didn't want to leave any traces for a reinstall. i think it deleted the package from the manager. how can i get it back?

23:15<fallore>jmcnaught, do you mean from the debian package manager?
23:15<jmcnaught>fallore: yeah. are you using synaptic or something?
23:15<jmcnaught>fallore: removing or purging a package doesn't make it unavailble to reinstall again
23:16<fallore>jmcnaught, yeah i mentioned that. i'm trying to install steam and it kept telling me about missing libraries or dependencies or something, so i thought maybe installing it through synaptic might install the ones i need.

23:25<guillaume> my lspci info for my sound.
23:26<jmcnaught>fallore: for what it's worth, steam is listed in jessie on, but that package is not available on my system. Maybe something happend to them
23:26<jmcnaught>guillaume: you get some sound just not all the channels or speakers?
23:26<fallore>jmcnaught, i'm not having much trouble getting steam installed, just having trouble with error messages about missing files/dependencies/libraries once it is
23:26<guillaume>no sound at all
23:27<guillaume>alsa is installed and the alsa mixer said the volume is at 100% the speaker work on another computer so not the speaker
23:27<jmcnaught>fallore: i don't know much about steam, but there is a wiki page:
23:28<fallore>yeah i'm going through that now. thanks a lot

23:29<jmcnaught>fallore: hah.. the reason i don't have it listed on my system is i don't have i386 sources.. it might be a multi-arch issue for you too, pretty easy to fix
23:30<jmcnaught>guillaume: does Xfce have some sort of sound configuration, possibly under a settings menu?

23:42<guillaume>il try
23:42<jmcnaught>guillaume: your lspci output only lists one sound card
23:44<guillaume>with the pavucontrol i see the sound bar working ( youtube run ) but there is a x on every little speaker logo

23:52<oscarvarto>I was trying to get newer packages
23:52<jmcnaught>oscarvarto: if you don't want to use the debian packages, you'll need to ask the mono channel why there repository is broken
23:53<oscarvarto>jmcnaught, OK
23:53<jmcnaught>oscarvarto: my advice is to be wary of third party repos in general, they can make debian systems unupgradable
