07:19<blu>hi guys. I've got this old UMTS/3g WWAN Stick and discovered it can send sms / receive too. I wrote a little python around gammu (some sms thingy) and can now send mails to foo@bar.com and my py will fetch that, parse it and send it via sms to my mobile. What I want is to have stuff like "plugins", which have a function to send a message and to fetch messages. This for sms, jabber, emails, and so on (generic). Is there something like this out ther

07:23<blu>markybob, ah interesting, I used https://pypi.python.org/pypi/python-gammu/ as I already knew the cli program, thanks for the hint. What I'm actually looking for is some daemon that handles incoming messages (via sms, jabber email), and then forwards those via "defined protocol" to "defined contact person", as in I get to specify if I get an email at foo@bar.com in INBOX/something, forward that via Jabber to bluenemo@foo.org, if its in INBOX/bar u
07:23<blu>se sms to forward to "number" and so on. That with error handling (couldnt forward your email to sms as sms is broken)
07:26<blu>markybob, I'm currently using some old huawei stick, did you test py smsapi with such a device? I used gammu so far as it plays nicely with my hardware, but I'm open to a lib with more functionality. Anyhow, all I want for now is "fetch" and "send" sms

08:26<DoctorD90>hello. Im tryint to create a custom debian iso. I have followed 'willhaley custom debian' guide, but at the end it gives me error "kernel panic" and i cant solve that :( i have installed more or less all stuff required(except lxde/xserver). May anyone help me? :)
08:27<SynrG>not without narrowing it down to specifics.
08:28<DoctorD90>SynrG: sorry, related to me?
08:28<SynrG>yes. reduce it to a specific question relating to debian and maybe we can help.
08:29<DoctorD90>http://willhaley.com/willhaley/blog/create-a-custom-debian-live-environment/

08:30<thy_pope>Which Debian verson should I even try to install on a Pentium 1 machine with 256 RAM ?
08:30<DoctorD90>this is guide i followed :) solved some little issue relating syslinux, but when i boot in virtualbox it says "kernel panic x000....."
08:30<SynrG>DoctorD90: why not just use live-build which is actually supported?
08:31<SynrG>DoctorD90: the author of that article says "As a fairly a new member, I am currently assisting more senior members in their roles in the hope that I may contribute as much as possible to the Bluff Trail and the environment."
08:31<SynrG>argh, mispaste
08:31-!-davi [~davi@2001:4b98:dc0:51:216:3eff:feae:792] has joined #debian
08:31<SynrG>DoctorD90: the author of that article says "f you are wondering why I did not use live-build I will say that I fought with live-build 3.0~a24-1ubuntu32.5 for several evenings before I admitted defeat.
08:31<SynrG>"
08:32<SynrG>That is not a Debian version of live-build
08:32<SynrG>so the author's complete rationale for not using live-build, which is the satndard solution to this problem, is because some non-Debian version of it didn't work for him.
08:32<DoctorD90>SynrG: because i dont like use script that do all them. I would learn. And being that script done very well, i have before to learn scripts-doc, than use it....i'd like much more learn the real stuff at the basics
08:33<SynrG>you're on your own, then
08:33-!-Bzz [~rodney@186.42.85.87] has joined #debian
08:33<SynrG>live-build i can help with. random guides on the internet, i haven't time for.
08:33<SynrG>especially when your actual problem is so ill-defined
08:33<DoctorD90>yes, but i cant understand, why, debootstrapin, chrooting, installing all stuff at the end i get "kernel panic"
08:33<SynrG>neither can i
08:34<DoctorD90>many thx btw for.your interest SynrG :)
08:34<SynrG>maybe you could reduce the parameters of the problem down to some simple, reproducible thing that causes the failure
08:34<DoctorD90>for example? what do you mean?
08:34<DoctorD90>i have done all as simple as i can
08:34<SynrG>i tried *X* (something we can reproduce easily) and expected *Y*. instead I got *Z*
08:35<SynrG>you haven't done that
08:35<SynrG>sorry. nobody on irc is going to follow your long, overly-complicated guide just to do something that's easily accomplished in a standard way
08:35<SynrG>if you can break it down into one *step* that fails, that we may be able to help with
08:36<DoctorD90>oh, sorry. I have runned command in that link, and at the end i'd have the iso to be runned as live :) but it gives kernel panic
08:36<SynrG>or else you could just use the standard tools. maybe you'll get better results. maybe, also, you'll learn more than you thought you would.
08:37<DoctorD90>eh, the issue is that it is a bunch of command, (mainly creation and settupping of env probably) the issue
08:37<SynrG>a command i can run by itself to reproduce your results?
08:37<DoctorD90>not only one.
08:38<DoctorD90>unfortunatly i have to go to lunch. If you (or anyother) is alive in some next hour, i can totally paste error i get in vbox :) thx for your effort :)
08:38<SynrG>which version of Debian are you building this on? the guide mentions linux-image-3.2.0-4-686 which seems to be a wheezy kernel ...
08:39<SynrG>if you're not building a wheezy image, chances are there are aspects of that guide that no longer apply
08:39<musca>thy_pope: https://www.debian.org/releases/stable/i386/ch02s01.html.en chapter 2.1.2.1. CPU: debian stable supports all varieties of Intel's "Pentium" series
08:39<thy_pope>yeah musca I know, but will it like the 256 megs of ram ?
08:39<thy_pope>also, keep in mind I can't boot from CD :))
08:40<musca>well, modern browsers will be difficult ...
08:40<musca>!plop
08:40<dpkg>Plop Boot Manager is a boot loader with built-in IDE CD-ROM and USB drivers. This allows booting from CD-ROM and USB on legacy PC systems without BIOS support. Plop Boot Manager is proprietary but free for personal and non-commercial use. http://www.plop.at/en/bootmanager/
08:40<DoctorD90>SynrG: i have tried with wheezy, but i have done all back again with jessie, installing linux-image-568
08:41<thy_pope>ah thanks musca I'm gonna try that
08:41<DoctorD90>(all the time same issue :( )
08:41<SynrG>DoctorD90: the exact output of the boot, including the error may help. we could at least interpret it for you
08:41<thy_pope>uh oh, everyone, the plop link is wrong, this is the correct link http://www.plop.at/en/bootmanagers.html
08:42<SynrG>aside from that, there are *tons* of reasons you might get a "kernel panic". hard to say what the cause is without seeing any output
08:42<DoctorD90>oh! this would be great :) i finish to lunch and run it in vbox!! many thx :) see ya in a half hour
08:42<SynrG>DoctorD90: still not buying into your basic premise, that you will learn more if you don't use the standard solution, though.
08:43<SynrG>DoctorD90: i say, use live-build, then dissect it after you make it work to try to learn how it works
08:43<SynrG>k. later

12:46<daunt>anyone know why mouse themes don't change unless it's a special mouse shape like expanding a window?
12:47<daunt>happens for all desktop themes cinnamon, gnome, xsession, fxc, it's all the same outcome
12:47<somiaj>daunt: windows have the ability to set their own mouse cursor, so setting a mouse theme isn't that easy if I recall correctly.
12:48<somiaj>so setting the core xorg mouse theme may not effect gtk windows, as they will use their own mouse theme
12:48<daunt>damn =(
12:48<somiaj>I think if you set the mouse theme within the desktop (i.e. tell gnome to set the theme for all gtk windows) you can get it working fairly well
12:49<daunt>mouse and toupad settings never include anything for gtk, is that a command i have to look up?
12:49<somiaj>daunt: google is hinting that you need to update-alternatives, did you do that?

13:12<somiaj>Duckles: correct, the machine does not need to know what its domainname is because there is no nameserver saying hey you can find mydomain.com at this ip
13:13<somiaj>really this is just so the machien knows its domainname (if it has one), and to have one it needs to be configured on some nameserver/network configuration.
13:14-!-circ-user-j7X3U [~circuser-@160.245.133.77.rev.sfr.net] has joined #debian
13:14<somiaj>trying to find some documentation to back up my understanding. I don't run servers so I don't use domainnames myself, so not positive on the implicitions of the setting. But if you don't have a domainname the setting doesn't do much.
13:14<Duckles>So, I could, say, just for fun, name the computer hostname.domain (bagels.butter), and it will not try to create any connections to other .butter domains due to network isolation, and no domain server?
13:14<Duckles>Thank somiaj. I really appreciate your help.
13:15<somiaj>Duckles: nope, this is just so the machine knows who it is. Thus if you ask your machine 'hey what is your domain name' it will return the name you give it
13:15<somiaj>and I belive if you leave it blank you get localdomain as your domainanem
13:16<Duckles>but it shouldn't matter either way?
13:16<somiaj>Duckles: it shoudln't and it has nto effected me one bit to leave it blank in my many years of using debian
13:17<somiaj>again if you are actually building an internet server that has a FQD then it may matter because the machine needs to know who it is, but it doesn't sound like this is the case. (:
13:18<Duckles>It's not. I just have a naming scheme I might like to use the .domain field for. For instance, having 2 laptops that are bread.butter and bagel.butter, and then another laptop that's cookie.milk. I would not like them to communicate.

13:19<somiaj>Duckles: if they can communicate is more a network configuration issue than what you name them.
13:19<Duckles>even for the .domain?
13:19<markybob>so...put them on different networks. one on 10.x.x.x and one on 192.168.1.x or whatever
13:19<somiaj>Duckles: just don't install any server software. I'm sure they could ping each other (communicate) but if you aren't running a server that one can login then they can't really effect eachother

13:20<somiaj>Duckles: or as markybob said, put them on different networks and configure the router to not let traffic go between the two. The actuall configuration of if machines can communicate is done via networking and ip address. The names are just a way to identify the machine (the name server is what maps this to an ip
