03:34<pappad>I do have a support question for Debian, if I could take your time.
03:35-!-smig [] has joined #debian
03:35<twb>pappad: sure
03:35<pappad>I'm running Jessie, and lately it's taken ~90 hours for my remote server to boot up all the way. I looked in dmesg and found:
03:35<pappad>It's stalling at pref and again with networking stuff.
03:36-!-jmux [] has joined #debian
03:36<pappad>I installed linux-utils to try to fix the pref issue, but I'm stumped with the rest of it.
03:36<pappad>Especially since it just takes forever, and boots up anyway after a long time. So it's strange to me, and difficult to troubleshoot.
03:36<twb>pappad: is your debian root filesystem FAT formatted?
03:37<pappad>So I thought I'd get the thoughts of those here.
03:37-!-ilk [] has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
03:37-!-pamaury [] has joined #debian
03:37<twb>I do not think perf is the cause of the problem, it is just reporting that it saw the problem
03:38<pappad>I think my boot partition is. I would check for you and tell you, however it's still booting.
03:38<pappad>remotely, so I can't even physically check at the moment.
03:38<twb>pappad: OK. /boot is probably OK, but if / is fat you will probably have many many problems
03:38<twb>Did you see this line? [drm] Please upgrade your BIOS to fix this.
03:39<twb>I cannot see a "smoking gun" in your paste, so I would try usual things --- swap in different parts to see if the problem follows a part; use SMART to check disks are all OK; use memtest tocheck RAM is all OK
03:40-!-wavekidsjp [] has joined #debian
03:40<pappad>I see it now, but that looks like display related stuff. Also the manufacturer does not provide firmware updates for Linux Hosts sadly. I'll take a look when I can get physical access.
03:41<pappad>However the SMART came back clean, even after a long check.
03:41<pappad>And I haven't done memtest, so I will when I get physical access to the computer.
03:41<pappad>Thank you for your analysis.
03:41<twb>Yes for bios update you might need to boot into freedos, or even windows

04:02-!-tuhnis [~ChauffeR@] has joined #debian
04:02<twb>cx405: OK you know how there are three "rwx" ?
04:02<cx405>twb: yes, on umask, files, dirs. Sure
04:02<twb>So 750 --> rwxr-x---, the owner is the first of those three
04:02<cx405>octal and latein
04:03-!-ph0b0s [] has joined #debian
04:03<twb>Actually there is a fourth octect, which is used for setuid, setgid, and sticky.
04:03<cx405>twb, yeah, I know this too (pretty good, I'd say), but I don't get what object, file, dir is meant to be taken these rights from.
04:03<twb>The 7 is because 1 + 2 + 4 = 7. Or in binary, 111₂ which is directly corresponding to the r w x
04:04<twb>Ah sorry, I thought you were talking about owner bits
04:05-!-InvadeD [] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
04:05<twb>can you rephrase your question? I don't understand it
04:05<cx405>twb, yes I was talking about them... I simply don't get this. For example, one can specify umask with a value. But what does this mean "the umask group bits are set to be the same as owner bits".. I don't get where these owner bits are taken.
04:05<cx405>there is nothing supplied.
04:06<twb>Hm, you said pam_uname. Do you mean pam_umask? I don't have pam_uname
04:07<cx405>does this mean, umask looks at the permissions of the $home and inherits those for all (new touched) user files?
04:07<twb>It is getting the umask number from /etc/login.def or similar, as it says in the DESCRIPTION section
04:07<cx405>twb, yes, sorry. I mean umask everywhere. man pam_umask
04:08-!-mode/#debian [+l 700] by debhelper
04:08<twb>Also note
04:08<judd>Bug in libpam-modules (open, upstream, patch): «pam_umask: umask in /etc/login.defs not respected cause libpam_umask is not configured»; severity: normal; opened: 2011-10-26; last modified: 2013-04-23.

04:08<twb>pam_umask is off by default so nothing will happen unless you enable it
04:08<cx405>twb, yes, but that makes no sense to me. If umask is explicitly supplied, what is the use apply owner umask permissions as group umask permissions...
04:08<cx405>twb, its actually on.
04:09<twb>cx405: well it is saying if usergroups is passed to, it will ignore the group value in the umask
04:09<cx405>twb, on current debian testing setup, I get umask 0022 - and I never find where this is coming from.
04:09<twb>so umask=750 ---> umask is 750
04:09<twb>so umask=750 usergroups ---> umask is 770
04:10-!-pappad [~pappad@] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
04:10<twb>If you do not use "usergroups" option, it just uses the umask as-is

04:10<cx405>twb, ah, this is nice brilliant explaination. Thank you! Ignore supplied group umask value and substitute it with supplied owner umask value.
04:10-!-death1680 [] has joined #debian
04:11<cx405>twb, still, Debian somehow, by pure magic, applies 0022 everywhere.
04:11<twb>I would try grepping for 022 in /etc/ and ~/.??*
04:11<twb>It is probably .profile or something
04:11<cx405>twb, if you'd express you thoughts about where it may get that value, you will make my day!
04:11-!-death1680 [] has quit []

04:13<cx405>twb, been there. .profile, .bashrc, /etc/profile, /etc/bash.bashrc. There is only a UMASK 022 in /etc/login.defs, which is ignored because pam_umask is not initialized in /etc/pam.d/common-session
04:13-!-blackcat [~blackcat@] has joined #debian
04:13<cx405>twb, yeah, /etc/skel is also free. Only commented out variable in its .profile.
04:13<twb>Then it is probably coming from the thing that makes your user session -- e.g. openssh-server or gdm3
04:14<twb>Or possibly even the linux kernel
04:14<twb>I would not worry about where, just override it with pam_umask
04:14<cx405>I don't run openssh server on notebook. And I run MATE. Yes, I guess, I will take your advice!

05:11<Brigo>kaplan, there is a gcc transition and it can be the issue.
05:11<Brigo>!gcc transition
05:11<dpkg>One of the biggest transitions ever undertaken in Debian: new versions of libstdc++/gcc require over 3000 source packages to be recompiled. Don't expect packages in sid to be installable; use testing instead. (and if you didn't already know this, ask yourself if you should be using sid).
05:12<Brigo>you can try a simple sid backport:
05:12<dpkg>First, check for a backport on <debian-backports>. If unavailable: 1) Add a deb-src line for sid (not a deb line!); ask me about <deb-src sid> 2) enable debian-backports (see <bdo>) 3) aptitude update; aptitude install build-essential; aptitude build-dep packagename; apt-get -b source packagename; 4) install the resultant debs. To change compilation options, see <package recompile>; for versions newer than sid see <uupdate>.

05:56<SynrGy>the reason i mentioned non-free drivers is a graphics driver may implement "hardware cursors". whether or not that may be a possible source of the bug you're experimencing, i don't know
05:56<SynrGy>if you can try using the free radeon driver, though, that's one possibility

12:13<zhanshan>SynrG: I didn't managt to get sudo running
12:14<zhanshan>in linux mint I had sudo by default
12:14<dpkg>[sudo] (Substitute User DO) Not enabled by default on Debian systems; configure /etc/sudoers first, ask me about <visudo>, <sudoers>. sudo can give limited super user privileges to specific users, or allow you to do silly things like run X apps with root permissions, or good in scripts with "username ALL = NOPASSWD: /some/program". See also <sudo path>.
12:14<SynrG>follow this ^^
12:14<blast007>in Debian you have sudo working by default if you don't specify a root password during install (which it mentions in the installer)
12:15<zhanshan>ah ok
12:15<SynrG>zhanshan: since you've been "doing it wrong" all along, i don't know what other strange things you've done to your system as a result :(
12:15<zhanshan>but that's what I did
12:15<SynrG>basically, everywhere apt requires interaction with you, you've been preventing it
12:15<zhanshan>so now I get problems because sudo asks for a pwd but I don't know the right one/didn't specify it so fa
12:15<blast007>sudo uses your user password
12:15<zhanshan>SynrG: I can imagine now!
12:16<zhanshan>user is not in the sudoers file. This incident will be reported.
12:16<SynrG>then become root and edit sudoers with visudo
12:16<zhanshan>if I hit user pwd I get the bad answer
12:16<SynrG>right, because you haven't configured it yet
12:16<dpkg>from memory, visudo is how you add users to your /etc/sudoers file. 'man visudo' for details, and also ask me about <sudoers>, or respects $EDITOR while doing sanity checking (prevents *some* critical commits of broken sudoers).

13:11<SynrG>yes, you can do that temporarily
13:11<zhanshan>trash the gtx 970
13:11<SynrG>how urgent is it that you get that card working?
13:12<SynrG>if you don't want to do the work of making a backport work, i think you just need to wait until an upgraded driver enters stretch ...
13:12<zhanshan>not at all urgent since I use blender's VSE to edit video and this program can't make any use of the nvidia gtx 970 I learnt after I bought it
13:12-!-MK [~MK@] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
13:12<SynrG>then shortly after that, they will probably backport this to jessie

13:12<SynrG>or hold onto it until a jessie backport becomes available
13:13<SynrG>or do the work to do the backport yourself.
13:13<zhanshan>yes or so+
13:13<SynrG>it's not like it's never going to be supported. throughout each stable release there's a constant stream of new upstream versions from nvidia ...
13:13<SynrG>and these tend to get backported periodically into stable

13:15<SynrG>np. good luck!
13:16<SynrG>zhanshan: one more suggestion ... it looks like you may not have blacklisted the nouveau kernel module ...
13:17<SynrG>zhanshan: by blacklisting it, you *might* be able to get those nouveau complaints out of your boot log
13:17<SynrG>and that might sort out the missing virtual terminal issue.

13:25<zhanshan>so no nouveau blacklisting
13:25<SynrG>so create a new file to blacklist as per:
13:25<dpkg>To blacklist a Linux kernel module, create/edit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.local.conf and add a line similar to this (without quotes): "blacklist module_name". If this doesn't work, do 'echo "install modulename /bin/true" >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.local.conf'. IMPORTANT: ask about <blacklist-initramfs>. 22:53<daunt>in XCHAT
22:54<markybob>daunt, kill it, then, rm -rf ~/.xchat2

23:05<somiaj>Daunt: he didn't he said you can just exit xchat with /exit (this kills the program). He then suggested that you remove the .xhcat2 directory to rest all configurations to default.
23:06<somiaj>Daunt: another useful bit of advise is use google. look up 'toggle file menu in xchat' or something like that
23:06<Daunt>it exited me from the channel but left the screen up with nothing clickable, thought you did it on purpose
23:06<somiaj>might be file bar or somehthing like htat.

23:07<somiaj>Daunt: anyways, his suggest of deleting the config file is probabal ythe best, just restart as opposed to try to modify it. though I prefer, 'mv ~/.xchat2 ~/.xchat2-bak'
23:07<somiaj>Daunt: that will just move the files so you can restore them if you wish as opposed to just deleting them, but also allow you to reset xchat back to its default settings

23:27<somiaj>Daunt: yea I was just assuming the first post gave the correct directory, but the . files are usually config files and be found with 'ls -a'
23:27<Daunt>and for future reference so the next guy doesn't need to restart, tell them Alt+f4 to close the window as /exit just disconnects chat and for you talking to someone new they can't know how to rejoin
