03:20<amiconn>Is there an ETA when the current dependency messup in sid will be fixed?
03:20<amiconn>I know that sid dependencies may be broken at times, but in the past they were usually fixed within a few days.
03:20<amiconn>The current problem persists for at least 3 weeks now though, stopping me from upgrading ~200 packages, because doing this upgrade wants to uninstall several application packages I use: aptitude (!), gimp, sigil, sqlitebrowser, totem

07:31<dpkg>First, check for a backport on <debian-backports>. If unavailable: 1) Add a deb-src line for sid (not a deb line!); ask me about <deb-src sid> 2) enable debian-backports (see <bdo>) 3) aptitude update; aptitude install build-essential; aptitude build-dep packagename; apt-get -b source packagename; 4) install the resultant debs. To change compilation options, see <package recompile>; for versions newer than sid see <uupdate>.

11:19<Ghostbird>What goes wrong with dpkg?
11:20<robbiegold>Hey guys I'm trying to connect to my university's wireless but it needs a username and password--I think that's 802.1x?
11:20<robbiegold>Anyway, I can log in with the Gnome settings thing, but I don't typically use gnome
11:20<robbiegold>So what's the network connection applet called?
11:20<johanderex>que paso

11:20<twb>wicd? wifi-radar? NetworkManager-applet ?
11:21<robbiegold>Thanks twb, that's a good start for where to look
11:21<twb>You can probably supply the username & password directly in wpa_supplicant.conf
11:21<twb>Assuming you *want* to bypass NM
11:21<robbiegold>Is that /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf?
11:21<mtn>robbiegold, gnome uses network manager
11:22<twb>I have done EAP-TLS (WPA Enterprise) that way, with client TLS certs. I have not done 802.1x auth there -- that's separate from the wifi stack, I think
11:22<twb>robbiegold: I've seen it in /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf
11:22<Eryn_1983_FL>it wont remove it
11:22<Eryn_1983_FL>and the status is 20 :(

15:21<inkbottle>Hi, how to obtain, from command line, the version number for a given package, and a given "distribution" (sid, stretch, jessie)?
15:22<somiaj>inkbottle: this requires a bit of work, because usually you should not have sid, stretch and jessie in your sources.list at the same time.
15:22<somiaj>inkbottle: why are you wanting this? Are you really mixing sid, jessie and stretch sources? Or are you just courious or wondering how judd does it?
15:23<inkbottle>somiaj: really? I do

15:23<dpkg>When you get random packages from random repositories, mix multiple releases of Debian, or mix Debian and derived distributions, you have a mess. There's no way anyone can support this "distribution of Frankenstein" and #debian certainly doesn't want to even try. See if you can convince ##linux to help.
15:23<somiaj>inkbottle: mixing sources (espically stable with testing or sid) can cause lots of problems and break your system in unforseen ways and make it so you can't even give a good bugreport.
15:23<somiaj>inkbottle: it is not suggested to mix versions of debian.
15:23<inkbottle>somiaj: well I don't mix (not a lot), but I've got them in my source list
15:24<inkbottle>the purpose would be to do some downgrade
15:24<somiaj>inkbottle: lets say you want to install one package from sid, well this package by itself would be no problem, but this packge depends on a bunch of core libaries, so now we need to pull in these core libaries from sid.
15:24<bluzeo>ok guys im about to be need a little help-i found out mate is bit more what i need - how do i get rid of KDE?

15:24<somiaj>inkbottle: now other stuff on your system also uses these core libaries, so now you have unstable core part of your system and other parts can start running into issues.
15:25<somiaj>inkbottle: you should learn to backport software you need, not install the binary from the sid repo.

15:26<somiaj>bluzeo: simple method, 1) install mate, load mate, let kde live on your hd but don't use it
15:26<somiaj>bluzeo: really as long as you have the hd space having kde packages on your harddrive is just fine and they won't run if you are running mate
15:26<bluzeo>ok
15:26<somiaj>bluzeo: a little less simple, but doable. after you got mate installed and running, start remove main kde packages

15:27<somiaj>bluzeo: this will work, note pay attention to what other packages it wants to remove, as you may need some core kdepackages (and qtlibs) for some of the software you like to use even if you aren't using it in kde.
15:27<somiaj>inkbottle: it tells you not only the installed package, it tells you every version that is available in your sources.list below it

15:28<bluzeo>i been switching between them due my friends are using it for the monent - i love KDE but this has an built in Vnc client
15:28<somiaj>inkbottle: and in that case you should be able ot match what version it is from. Note since sid and jessie are changing it could be you have a version that is no longer available in any repo, so you kinda just have to guess based on the version. Also check for if the version is a security update version vs a version from jessie, sid
15:28<somiaj>bluzeo: as long as hd space is not an issue keep both around as you may want to play with kde again and see if you can find said feature for kde
15:29<somiaj>bluzeo: having extra stuff installed on the hd won't waste resources (except hard drive space which is failry cheap in my opinion) unless you load/run it

17:49<toastedmilk>I have a terrible, terrible noob question to ask. I've just installed 8.1.0 without mirrors and with system utilities over the desktop environment selection. I am not at a localhost login screen - however I was not prompted to set a root password during the installation, and now cannot access root. Is there something obvious I've missed or a workaround available?

19:07<sney>!testing sources.list
19:07<dpkg>Using "testing" instead of the current codename (e.g. jessie) in your sources.list isn't as bad as using stable in your sources.list; you will just seamlessly continue to track the "testing" distribution following a release. Note that for a few months just after a release, testing can be a pretty bumpy ride... perhaps running stable would be a better idea? See also <stable sources.list>, <jessie sources.list>.

23:45<sagpatke>hi! I need help recovering my debian jessie desktop. I was running upgrade when the power failed. I had to use the recover option on the debian CD to run "dpkg --configure all" before I could get the gdm3 login. But now, the icons on the top right are missing, and when I enter my password, nothing happens. I have access to the shell (Ctrl+Alt+F1).

23:49<jmcnaught>sagpatke: were you just doing regular updates, or an upgrade between releases?

23:51<sagpatke>jmcnaught: regular upgrade. There also was a kernel upgrade from 3.12 to 3.16 I think.

23:51<sagpatke>jmcnaught: not sure though, but I did glimpse the upgrade generating new initramfs.
23:52<jmcnaught>sagpatke: upgrading the kernel from 3.12 to 3.16 is out of the ordinary, but you might be mistaken. Have you tried runnin apt-get upgrade again, maybe it's still got more to do?

23:53<sagpatke>jmcnaught: jmcnaught Yes, I tried it a few times. The first time, It did configure a few packages.
23:55<sagpatke>jmcnaught: I also tried removing and again adding back Desktop Environment and Gnome Desktop using tasksel. The remove and reinstallation took about 10 secs each, which was surprising to me.

23:56<sagpatke>Tried to remove --purge and reinstall gnome, gnome-session, gdm3.. Each took less than 10 sec.
23:56<jmcnaught>sagpatke: it was basically just removing and readding a metapackage that depends on other packages
