---Logopened Sat Aug 29 00:00:19 2015
---Daychanged Sat Aug 29 2015
00:00<jmcnaught>sagpatke: you could look at the journal for gdm. it might be useful to exclude the messages from Xorg (there are a lot). "journalctl -b 0 -u gdm | grep -v "Xorg"". The first part looks at the journal for the current boot, for the gdm service, the grep part excludes lines containing "Xorg"
00:01<jmcnaught>sagpatke: you could throw " | less" on the end to read it yourself and look for errors, or install pastebinit and pipe it to that, then share the link in the channel so others can help look for errors

00:14<jmcnaught>sagpatke: heh, you know I get the both of those messages too on my working system (including "Failed to give slave programs access to the display. Trying to proceed.") so that message might be spurious

00:33<jmcnaught>sagpatke_: it's probably better to keep looking logs to find the problem. You could try looking at the journal unfiltered "journalctl -b 0", it will be quite long. Try usin pastebinit with it again
00:34<sagpatke_>jmcnaught: One update. I tried to start gnome from startx. It's weird, that none of the icons are displayed, only empty spaces in their place. I tried starting gedit, and I get the message "Oh no! Something has gone wrong. A problem has occured and the system can't recover. All extensions have been disabled as a precaution."
00:35<jmcnaught>sagpatke_: i don't know what would cause it, but if you can get your journalctl output on http://paste.debian.net/ I am happy to try and spot errors, others here might spot something too

00:48<sagpatke>1195-1526 all say the same.
00:48<jmcnaught>sagpatke: are you using the default theme? For example I don't even have a file /usr/share/gnome-shell/theme/running-indicator.svg
00:49<sagpatke>jmcnaught: no. I was running a different Gnome Shell Theme.
00:49<jmcnaught>sagpatke: my bad, i do have that file. what does "file /usr/share/gnome-shell/theme/running-indicator.svg" return? can you log into gnome as a different user?
00:50<sagpatke>jmcnaught: I'm able to login with a different account, which has default theme. However, the icons are still not being displayed.
00:51<jmcnaught>sagpatke: how did you install the non-default theme?
00:51<sagpatke>from gnome-tweak-tool.
00:52<sagpatke>I'm not able to open gedit with the other user, and I'm getting the same message "A problem has occured and the system can't recover. All extensions have been disabled as a precaution"

12:53<somiaj>redux: usually that error is because gnome3 needs decent graphic drivers and vnc isn't good enough. Try another desktop

12:55-!-iper [~iper@tor-exit.ethanro.se] has joined #debian
12:55<redux>somiaj, I've installed NVidia proprietary drivers. I'll try another desktop though
12:55<somiaj>redux: vnc doesn't use the video drivers of the host, so that won't effect vnc
12:56<somiaj>also if you are expecting good graphics, vnc is not the way to connect to the machine remotely. spice is supose to be better, but over all 3D graphics is not really designed to use a remote display.
12:57<redux>I don't want to use VNC this way. I want to control my Debian PC from another computer, all within my local network. And just for desktop, not 3D graphics
12:58<redux>Tried using second desktop, still the same error

12:59<somiaj>what kind of control. I personally use ssh, but yes vnc or x11 forwarding gives you some more graphical control
12:59<somiaj>it doesn't sound like you set up the other desktop correctly as that error still sounds like a gnome error, so when you connect via vnc it is trying to load gnome
13:01<redux>"Remote desktop" kind of control. Not using SSH atm.

13:02<somiaj>I was trying to find some help in google, but gnome now requires opengl graphics to work or it gives that 'something has gone wrong error' and you won't have opengl graphics over vnc so unsure what would need to do to get gnome3 on jessie to work over vnc
13:03<somiaj>I would suggest using a desktop that doesn't use opengl graphics
13:03<somiaj>again this is what I think the issue is, I could be wrong.

16:27<somiaj>joelkraehemann: intel doesn't have non-free drivers. Intel releases its drivers as opensource and they are in debian main.

16:28<joelkraehemann>thank you I'll give it a try :)
16:29<somiaj>joelkraehemann: look at what judd said, you are probabaly using the 2.21.15 version of the driver, and in jessie backports you can get 2.99.917 version. Sometimes there is improvments for newer hardware (like the integrated ivy bridge chipset). Again this is just a guess, but it appears your drivers are correctly loaded so the artificats you see in gnome 3 seem odd to me
16:29<somiaj>the only thing I would try is the newer drivers and kernel since they are available in jessie-backports and should isntall nicely. If this dosen't fix the issue, I'm unsure what the problem could be.
16:29<joelkraehemann>should I provide you a photo?
16:30<somiaj>no, that won't help give me any better idea what the issue could be
16:30<somiaj>if it isn't a driver issue I wouldn't nkow where to look.
16:30<joelkraehemann>I try the new driver if it's still a problem I do so

18:45<whologin>hi all
18:47<somiaj>reallybigrock: are you trying to mix testing and unstable sources, if so be careful as you can get strange results. On top of that you should really be asking for support in #debian-next
18:48<whologin>anyone have experience installing on an asus x205ta?
18:49<reallybigrock>oh ok. Is it better to just use unstable for everything?

18:49<somiaj>reallybigrock: right now due to the gcc5 transition they are both very unstable and you will find lots of bugs.
18:49<somiaj>reallybigrock: but it is better to only run one of them. Run either only testing or run only unstable. Each has its own issues. Also use #debian-next for support.

18:50<reallybigrock>ok thanks
18:50<somiaj>reallybigrock: if you start mixing you can create new bugs and also make bug reporting hard becuase it is hard to say if your bug is due to an unstable package, a testing package or a mix.

23:02<cx405>I have a problem with translation in Debian. This is testing, but probably applies to Stable. Problem is - in KDE desktop, all GTK applications ignore the locale and use default en_US locale. Installed task-$locale-desktop, installed all "i18n" and "l10n" packages. For example, iceweasel lists the language pack, but does not use it.
23:03<jmcnaught>cx405: support for testing is in #debian-next :)

23:07<jmcnaught>whologin: the debian installer probably doesn't use your USB wifi because it requires a firmware that isn't on the installer image.
