02:55<somiaj>whologin: not really, you can basically install any desktop/wm you like and try it out. Most will live side by side. You can also look for xfce themes if you want to change the appearnce but like xfce
02:55<whologin>oh
02:55<whologin>i reinstalled the entire OS and chose lxfe
02:56<whologin>but now i have a messed up wifi connection
02:56<whologin>this one uses Wicd and its keeps disconnecting and reconnecting
02:56<somiaj>whologin: you could have just installed lxde without reinstalling. dpkg is fairly powerful. As long as you don't break your debian you should not have to reinstall and be able to change software if needed
02:56<somiaj>!don't break debian
02:56<dpkg>i guess dont break debian is https://wiki.debian.org/DontBreakDebian
02:57<whologin>i want to use network manager
02:57<somiaj>whologin: Its probabaly something with the driver that keeps dcing, and wicd automatically reconnects. then install it.
02:57-!-llimeht [~stuart@themill.user.oftc.net] has quit []
02:58<whologin>i used the same .deb though
02:58<whologin>it seem like a signal strenght issue
02:58<whologin>it always say 1%
02:59<whologin>says
02:59<somiaj>whologin: it could be that networkmanager was just better at reconnencting. Anyways, usually installing something like network manager may not fix the issue. But feel to install it. 'apt-cache search network manager' for the various network manager packages you can choose from

06:15<vakla>Hi, I'm trying to run a netinst of Debian Squeeze (2.6.32-5-versatile) in qemu in order to build an ARM debian filesystem. However, fetching files from any mirrors fails. I've tried wheezy instead and while this successfully fetches files from the mirrors, it doesn't work for my application. How can I install 2.6.32-5 successfully? thanks

13:46<somiaj>maskdbandit: there is no nice way to downgrade, plus downgrading from sid to oldstable (wheezy) can add even more problems, usually suggested you reinstall.

18:50<centrx>Though DOS didn't really have lots of that
18:50<whologin>ok

18:51<centrx>The Linux kernel is the operating system, strictly defined
18:52<tmath>You'll find a lot of differences between a Linux shell and MSDOS. The closest thing M$ seems to have going right now is powershell. Though that's object oriented and not stream oriented.
18:52<whologin>you need to use simpler concepts. "shell agnostic"? sounds religious
18:52<centrx>Learning how to use bash and the command-line is of course essential to interacting with the system
18:53<whologin>ok cool
18:53<centrx>whologin, MS-DOS came with one shell, it was probably directly integrated into the whole code base, and they may be considered indistinguishable

18:57<whologin>speaking of religion, there seems to be as many different versions of *nix and mulitipple flavours of each as there are religions. seems like a pattern.
18:57<tmath>They have purposes.
18:57<whologin>whats up with that?
18:58<whologin>seems like a lot of dispersed talent working on different things
18:58<tmath>Kali is a pentest distro. Ubuntu is easy for beginners. Puppy is small. Arch is do it yourself with binary packages. Gentoo is do it yourself with source packages.

23:13<Guest303>is anyone available to help get my Intel Corporation Wireless 7260 (rev 73) card to work ?
23:14<somiaj>Guest303: what version of debian are you running? I have that card and once you install the firmware-iwlwifi it should just work (provided you are on jessie)
23:15<Guest303>debian 8.1 cinnamon
23:15<somiaj>that card just requires non-free firmware. You may have to enable the non-free repo and then install the firmware package. Reload the wifi module (or reboot) and your wifi card should be working.
23:16<somiaj>works fine on my jessie laptop
