00:41<slbtc>I need help. I can't seem to be able to switch to XFCE desktop. cinnamon keeps freezing
00:42<slbtc>and I'm forced to power off forcefully
00:42<slbtc>it's stuck like for hours
00:42<slbtc>does anyone else have this problem with the cinnamon desktop?
00:43<slbtc>LMDE2 I mean not debian

00:44<dpkg>Linux Mint is not Debian and is not supported in #debian. Please use their forums at http://forums.linuxmint.com/ or join #linuxmint-help on irc.spotchat.org for support. Linux Mint is variously based on <Ubuntu> with a "Linux Mint Debian Edition" (LMDE) also available. See also <based on debian>, <mintppc>.
00:46<shawn>slbtc: when you're tired of mint ****ing up, why dont you give debian a try?
00:46<shawn>:D
00:46<slbtc>sorry. well I'm using debian on my laptop
00:47<dcraig>smart move
00:47<slbtc>and getting a free-software only laptop libreboot with trisquel GNU/linux
00:48<slbtc>but I'd like to have one system where I can use flash for less private communications
00:48<slbtc>=x I'm a huge Richard Stallman supporter
00:49<shawn>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=umQL37AC_YM
00:49<shawn>slbtc: you can stay fully non-free with debian, just dont add contrib or non-free to sources
00:50<shawn>er
00:50<shawn>stay fully free*
00:51<slbtc>only reason why I need flash is to stream on sites that aren't compatible with HTML5.
00:51<shawn>slbtc: dont tell richard stallman that
00:51<slbtc>otherwise I'd stick to HTML5 since it is theoretically safer and in some ways more stable.
00:51<slbtc>=x lol
00:51<shawn>i only need flashplayer for redtube :P
00:52<shawn>if it werent for that i wouldnt need it at all
00:52<slbtc>lol I use it for sites that stream movies I don't go to the movies anymore <.<
00:52<shawn>dont lie, admit it its for fap material
00:52<slbtc>XD
00:52<shawn>theres only one thing you love more than richard stallman^

00:56-!-felixsch__ [~felixsch@p5B146A79.dip0.t-ipconnect.de] has joined #debian
00:56<slbtc>I have an interesting question actually about linux in general.
00:56<slbtc>it's less technical and more on a conspiracy level type of question.
00:57<slbtc>and it's not NSA related either.
00:57<dcraig>is it about macaroni and cheese?
00:58<slbtc>why is it that most all linux and GNU/linux distros have logos that can be traced to masonic/occult symolism?
00:58<slbtc>lol no
00:58<slbtc>close though
00:58<dcraig>linux mint's logo looks like an abstract leaf
00:58<shawn>and the spiral on debian is from buzz lightyears chin
00:59<shawn>slbtc: you're just making connections out of your imagination, thats how all conspiracy theories work
00:59<dcraig>ubuntu's logo is 3 people holding hands or something
01:00<slbtc>like the spiral from debian could be seen as 666 same with trisquel and openSUSE. gnewsense has an eye of Ra/Horas like symbol, arch has a triangle similar to a bank I know of which resembles a pyramid with light illuminating from it.
01:00<shawn>http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v647/insighter7/ToyStory.jpg
01:00<shawn>look at the chin
01:00<slbtc>also gnewsense's alternative logo is that of a ram which can be relevant to Baphomet
01:01<slbtc>ram or bull
01:01<shawn>slbtc: you are completely nuts arent you
01:01<dcraig>I think he's onto something here
01:01<slbtc>._. no just hard to ignore these things
01:01<shawn>dcraig: lol
01:01-!-felixsch_ [~felixsch@p548A551F.dip0.t-ipconnect.de] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
01:01<slbtc>just being observant
01:02<shawn>gnewsense shows a tree
01:02<shawn>like a tree which has been nibbled on by giraffes
01:02-!-das_cheese [~das_chees@2602:ae:1863:fa00:a406:60a0:bfda:c151] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
01:02<dcraig>or freemasons
01:02<shawn>lol
01:02<slbtc>think of it this way. many dismiss the existance of the illuminati. but when it comes to Masons/Freemasons/ knights of templar they're more inclined to believing their existance
01:03<shawn>because the best way to hide their existence is to plant their logos everywhere
01:03-!-bieyeik2aX [~error@190.104.77.68] has joined #debian
01:03<slbtc>and it's documented that masons were and are builders
01:03<slbtc>they love their symbols
01:03<slbtc>trademarks
01:03<slbtc>is it that farfetched?
01:04<shawn>you're completely bonkers
01:04<slbtc>well it's an obsession of theirs clearly
01:04<dcraig>ok slbtc, let's pretend that the freemasons really are picking the logos for linux distros
01:04<dcraig>what does that mean?
01:04<slbtc>and you're right they would be morons to do that if they were attempting to "hide"
01:05<shawn>dcraig: thats what he was asking us
01:05<shawn> 21:56 slbtc I have an interesting question actually about linux in general.
01:05<shawn>he wanted to know why
01:05<slbtc>well it's like predictive programming or conditioning to not feel anything about it. to treat it as the norm
01:06<slbtc>to think nothing of them when they're constantly in use
01:06<shawn>slbtc: they're programming you to believe in fairy tales so you wont focus on real issues
01:06<slbtc>and probably to draw attention and profit in some cases
01:06<dcraig>I thought maye he'd have an opinion on why the logos are that way
01:06<slbtc>because of the trend
01:06<dcraig>maybe*
01:06-!-melmothX [~melmoth@77.229.210.248] has joined #debian
01:07<slbtc>some issues can be seen as a type of distraction so that they can pass unconstitutional laws
01:08<slbtc>to further extract individual privileges or "rights" as they have most people believing.
01:08<shawn>slbtc: you should be afraid of wealthy publicly trading companies lobbying to get the laws changed in twisted ways!
01:08<shawn>not secret organizations lol
01:09<slbtc>=x corporations and banks are more of a concern to me to be honest
01:09<shawn>yeah now we're talking
01:09<slbtc>ok here's another question then
01:09<shawn>no
01:09<shawn>please, no
01:09<slbtc>I know the supposed "reasoning" behind it
01:09<shawn>no you dont
01:09<shawn>i can see you dont know any reasoning
01:10<slbtc>why is google a contributer to KDE and still a search engine to many browsers in Linux distros?
01:10<slbtc>when google is one of the most powerful corporations considering they bought goldmensachs
01:10<dcraig>google is the illuminati
01:10<slbtc>does that make sense?
01:10<dcraig>that has been obvious for years
01:10-!-ryouma [~user@ip24-251-133-185.ph.ph.cox.net] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
01:11<slbtc>I'm asking seriously
01:11<shawn>google is responsable for contails too
01:11<shawn>i'm being serious too
01:12<slbtc>also if TOR is so encrypted and private yet it was made for who? the Navy? and it's considered "safer" ?
01:12<shawn>all of these things are... connected? hmmm
01:13<slbtc>I'm just saying the truth isn't just all black and white clear cut all the time r.r
01:14<slbtc>I don't buy into media hype in mainstream or alternative media
01:14<slbtc>take Edward Snowden for instance. If he stayed how long a month at the Russian airport? Why aren't there any photos?
01:15<slbtc>someone could of easily sneaked a pic of him there and leaked it on the net

15:04<c01d>somiaj, I know, I'm sorry - just had a typo in the first one and wanted to correct it. :-) Anyway, thank you for the link! I already read that, but to me that text is a bit abstract. I am interested in (small) topics/projects where there is a need for manpower, for example translations-stuff or the like. Do you have any idea where I can get a bit more of concrete information? :-)
15:05<somiaj>I personally don't. My support for the procject is just tech support on irc. Good documentation (or even updating old documentation) is another good place I think needs support and I don't think it takes much to say edit the wiki.

15:10<kafran>somiaj, first I installed the default desktop enviroment, but I don't liked the package selection. Its too bloated =(; Then I did a minimal install and installed gnome by hand with "no recommends" but I think something is missing, I'm thinking it so ugly =/
15:10<c01d>somiaj, yes, looks very good (especially pt. 3 and 5)
15:11<Dumont>hello everyone, i'm installing a NAS with openmediavault based on a debian weezy. i installed a gnome desktop environnement too because the machine will serve to consult internet. My question is this : how can i modify the grub to make choice to start openmediavault with or without desktop environment ?
15:11<somiaj>kafran: yea recommended packages should be installed (else things may not work).
15:11<kafran>I was using Korora (Fedora based) for a year, every things works fine out of the box. But the short life of Fedora releases and the everyday software upgrades was driving me crazy.
15:11<somiaj>kafran: gnome is just bloated, but the meta package gnome-core (or something like that) is about as small as you can make gnome. I perosnally use a light weight WM. But that is my prefence.
15:12<c01d>kafran, I use XFCE all the time and during installation I select it as default DE ... I really like it a lot (though it loooks a bit like win95 ;-) )
15:12<kafran>I really love Gnome 3 =D S2
15:12<somiaj>kafran: debian works fairly well out of the box, but debian provides you tons of choices and as such the defaults/confiugation you get with packages are not as fine tuned as other distros.
15:12<kafran>I cant even use windows anymore. I'm so productive on Gnome 3
15:13<somiaj>gnome 3 slows me down, I almost went down to ratposion but like a very minimial fvwm with out much of anything to get in the way of my productiive (except my irc window, which I should close and get back to work)
15:13<kafran>somiaj, I thinking I'm not knowing how to use apt very well. It install too much dependeces =/
15:13<somiaj>kafran: it is the packages you pick, if it is installing lots of stuff you are either picking a meta-package or need to install all that stuff.
15:14<david-e>hi, is there a tool in debian for writing educational courses? multiplatform would be a great plus, but I actually do not know where to start from. a quick "apt-cache search" told me about wims but wanted to know if there's some obvious tool I'm not aware of
15:14<somiaj>kafran: realize debian is very module in the fact that tons of stuff is split into small libaries, so I wouldn't worry about lots of packages.
15:14<kafran>I think things are more simple with RPM
15:14<somiaj>kafran: I also would not try to avoid installing recomeneds (I think there needs to be some bug reports moving recomends to suggested packages here and there), but over all if a package recomends aother package, you most likely want to install it or not use that functionality at all (that the other package provides)
15:15<somiaj>kafran: I wouldn't say simplier, sometimes it is just what you are use to, takes a while to get use to how another distro manages or splits up things.

15:16<somiaj>kafran: but I would instead of trying to find a debian derivative that fits you needs, ty to configure debian to fit your need. Also realize disk space is usually cheap, installing a few extra (but unused packages) doesn't really bloat the running system. (:

15:18<kafran>somiaj, I'm not knowing how to handle the apt dependecies. I cant remove a software installed with a metapackage for example
15:18<somiaj>kafran: find the packages and remove them. I belive they only get pulled in by the full meta-package and not the core meta-package
15:18<somiaj>kafran: I would suggest this 1) use netinstall to install a minimial system, then install the gnome-core package (as opposed to the gnome task or the large gnome metapackage)
15:18<somiaj>kafran: that should give you about as minimial of a gnome install on debian as you can get (with out really having to muk around with stuff)
15:19<c01d>david-e, had a look at http://moodle.org? there is also a debian package for it
15:19<david-e>c01d: they asked me something like a cdrom/usb that, when plugged, opens a browser and asks questions (fetched from database?)... think something like a tool training for the driving license exam
15:19<kafran>somiaj, ok. I'm gonna try this
15:19<somiaj>kafran: removing a meta-package does no harm to your machine. Now packages have a 'auto' flag, that can be set to auto or manual. If you remove a meta-package then any packages it automatically pulled in will want to be removed by apt (apt-get won't remove them by default, but suggest you do, aptutidue will remove them)
15:19<Dumont>can someone help me ?
15:19<david-e>c01d: I'm actually talking about browser and db not really strictly required
15:20<david-e>c01d: thank you for the tip though
15:20<somiaj>kafran: but you can also change this auto-flag and mark the core things you want as manual so they don't get removed with the meta-package
15:20<c01d>david-e, okay, I got it. Hmmmmmmmm. And I have no idea atm. :-/
15:20<kafran>somiaj, actually i want to remove a metapackage with all the packages

15:29<david-e>c01d: not surprised at all: in working environments I've seen even worse stuff...
