02:21<paxmark9>ryouma yes fglrx is the .deb aptitude show flgrx-driver http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Main_Page was a good site years ago but use the debian wiki these days for info.
02:24<paxmark9>ryouma, it has been awhile since I needed to use catalyst for my ancient amd C50 bobcat netbook. It was touchy getting it up and touchy to upgrade.

02:42<shawn>ryouma: i have an old imac, circa 2007
02:43<shawn>fglrx is a no go
02:43<shawn>you have to use open drivers
02:43<ryouma>it's the open driver that does not owrk. i am hoping the proprietary firmware will fix it.
02:43<shawn>and on my mac i had to forgo UEFI even though it should work

12:02<xormor> what is the problem? why does my mobile broadband need reconfiguration every time I restart the system? I need to choose the ISP provider every time from the menus.

12:08<somiaj>xormor: what program is actually connecting to your mobil broadband provider? My guess is it can be configured to know what ISP to use.
12:08<xormor>somiaj, NetworkManager?
12:09<somiaj>ahh for some reason I thought it was another program for this. One second (I don't use network manager)
12:09<xormor>somiaj, I am not sure of any other programs than NetworkManager that do networking on GNU/Linux (Debian).
12:09-!-Netsplit over, joins: Gathond
12:10<somiaj>xormor: network manager is mostly a front end that makes calls to the core tools. I use the core tools and don't know the one that does mobil broadband or celuar networks.
12:10<xormor>somiaj, I and my friend were unable to use the commandline to connect to the Internet with the mobile broadband USB stick.
12:10<xormor>somiaj, I wonder...
12:10<xormor>somiaj, I might be able to Google it, if I knew the right words to Google for.
12:10<somiaj>I'm surprised that network-manager does not rember that setting.
12:11<xormor>somiaj, the settings are displayed on the righthand upper menu, but I cannot use them. I click on them and nothing happens.
12:11-!-k [~k@ip68-98-152-77.dc.dc.cox.net] has joined #debian
12:11<xormor>somiaj, it remembers but does not know how to reuse it.
12:11<xormor>somiaj, the problem was not like that with the other ISP, the "DNA" ISP. this is "Saunalahti".
12:11<xormor>somiaj, I think Saunalahti is bugging.
12:12-!-tiagorocha [~tiagoroch@177.105.148.170] has joined #debian
12:13<somiaj>xormor: ahh, yea here I have no experience. I am looking up things like 'netowrk manager remember isp for broad band' and various on that. Finding how to set it up but not anything that I can suggest yet
12:13<xormor>somiaj, I think the problem is with how my ISP handles the calls.
12:13<somiaj>yea in that case not much you can do, and your ISP probabaly won't support linux.
12:14<xormor>somiaj, yeah... but it works if I always click on another connection... so the settings are new, and they work every time because they are new. I can see the OLD settings too, but they are unusable.

12:17<xormor>somiaj, yeah, that is alright. it is just some few extra clicks.
12:17<xormor>somiaj, for example if I use Facebook or IRC I have to click a lot more.

The server has a separated sata controller for the 2 hdds which should be run in RAID1. i used knoppix to backup all the data, so knoppix had no issues to find the hard drives, but when i boot the debian installer no hard drive gets found. I put the sata controller into AHCI mode

17:32<twonyblle>Hi, my EXT4 filesystem keeps switching to read-only and I'm not sure why. I've already checked the disk with smartctl and it seems to be perfectly healthy. However, it seems to have started when I moved some of my files from a Windows computer to the Linux drive via ext2fsd. These files were previously from the EXT4 drive and were left on Windows f

This problem also seems to randomly occur during computer usage, perhaps from accidentally touching some of these "corrupted" files. What steps should I take from here to resolve this?
17:33<twonyblle>Also, the files still open perfectly fine from the Windows computer.

20:35<shawn>why not just enable ctrl+alt+backspace?
20:36<shawn>beyond that you want it to automatically log out thats weird, but can be done without a script, just by putting "exit" in the right place

21:03<jmcnaught>k2alta: just as long as you're aware that it's not supported by debian. The command there might be failing because you don't have sudo installed. What the command is trying to do is put a line into the file /etc/apt/sources.list.d/deb-multimedia.list. It doesn't really matter the exact steps you take to get the line into that file if you know how to do it a different way.
