04:05<stemid>hi I'm trying to setup an sftp server with pam_mysql in the background. I've managed the pam configuration but when a user tries to login pam_mysql reports this in the debug log: https://paste.debian.net/311005/ I can rule out db schema issues because I'm already using the same schema for vsftpd using pam_mysql so it works fine. I'm trying to figure out what crypt() means by Invalid argument.
04:06<twb>By "an sftp server" do you mean OpenSSH, or something else?
04:06-!-fcrs_ [~fcrs@32.212.218.120] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
04:06<twb>Ah, vsftpd --- I thought it only implemented FTP and FTP/S, not SFTP
04:06<stemid>no, sorry. I do mean sftp, the subsystem to openssh.
04:07<stemid>vsftpd is another process on the same server.
04:07<stemid>also using pam_mysql though

04:07<jm_>EINVAL salt has the wrong format.
04:07<twb>crypt() tak- what he said
04:08<stemid>oic thanks.
04:08<stemid>now of course the question comes up, why is openssh using a different salt.
04:08<stemid>or which salt is openssh using?
04:08<stemid>not sure how to proceed.

04:09<stemid>yes, I can see the salt in my passwords that are in the mysql database. I've used something like $1$blabla$
04:09<twb>e.g. $6$waffles$robots the "waffles" part is the salt

04:10<jm_>it's not openssh, openssh just calls PAM API-s
04:10<stemid>yup. but I don't understand why vsftpd can handle it and openssh cannot. from what I can tell, openssh passes the clear text password to pam_mysql. so the same pam is handling both services.
04:10<stemid>but one is failing
04:10<twb>$1$ is SHA1, right? According to Aurora's chart, you should have migrated away from that in 2004
04:11<stemid>yes, there's a long backstory to that.
04:11<stemid>short story, I migrated an older ftp server into this one.
04:11<twb>OK, due diligence done
04:11<stemid>had to keep old accounts
04:11<jm_>you'd have to debug pam_mysql to see what happens there
04:11<twb>jm_: how do you know the problem is the salt, and not e.g. that pam_mysql isn't even getting a cleartext password from the service
04:12<stemid>I have debug logging active on pam_mysql. but it's not enough. the source code to pam_mysql.c is quite simple. I could probably add some additional debug lines and compile a debug version.
04:12<jm_>twb: well I based that on man crypt and its ERRORS section, of course it may be something else
04:12<jm_>and the debug logfile on paste site
04:12<twb>Ah k

I know dhcp works in the local network at work here, because I used it several times during jessie installation on other machines. However, after installing the base system, I found two Ethernet network controller, ifconfig does recognize only one instead. Could anyone please heelp me setting up network on the system?

09:42<lancelot_of>auto etho / allow-hotplug eth0 / iface eth0 inet dhcp
09:43<zathras>ok. repeat that config for eth1 as well
09:43<lancelot_of>zathras, ifconfig tells me there is only one ethernet card, whereas lspci recognizes both
09:44<zathras>yes. so add the config to /etc/network/interfaces
09:44<zathras>save the file and then: ifup -vvv eth1
09:46<zathras>lancelot_of, there are three things: lspci tells you something about the hardware, next a driver needs to be loaded and third a network interface needs to be configured. Only after all three are ok you can start trying to use dhcp etc etc

15:02<StorSnusarN^>Is that the only reason debian dont recommend users to install packages directly from source? Or is it any other reasons? The only thing i can understand is that it might be difficult to keep programs up to date with security fixes etc but if i just make sure to manage those programs on my own i will be fine, right? How about upgrading from one debian version to another if having programs
15:02<StorSnusarN^>installed by make install?
15:04<jmcnaught>StorSnusarN^: it's mostly that some software installed this way can be difficult to remove, so it's important to plan for that. gnu stow can help with that, compiling in a chroot is another option, or making a debian package (or backporting one from testing/unstable)

15:10<StorSnusarN^>jmcnaught Ok thx. srg I'm just curious how to install some packages not available with apt, but i understand this is not a preffered way to do things. But if i really want to use a program that i compile on my own, then i guess it's reccomended to remove those before upgrading debian to another version?
15:10<srg>StorSnusarN^: well you can keep them in your homedir
15:10<srg>that wont be a problem
15:10<jmcnaught>StorSnusarN^: or make sure they get installed to /usr/local (/usr is for apt/dpkg managed files), or /opt is another option
15:11<srg>the problem is when binaries, config files, docs, and whatever else start getting installed in random places aroudn your system
15:11<blast007>you'd probably have to rebuild them at minimum
15:12<SynrG>/opt tends to be used by ISVs for all-in-one-directory stuff

23:22<twb>clanc43: OK so key points: 1. dual-boot laptop; 2. many linux installs, including jessie, freeze during boot/login, hard enough that Ctrl+Alt+F1 doesn't do anything.

23:24<clanc43>ping the loopback? I can try
23:24<twb>No no, I mean can you ping it from another computer
23:24<twb>Because if you can then at least the kernel is still running OK
23:24<clanc43>I can run anything on the command line on debian
23:24<twb>That helps distinguish between "my keyboard/video froze" and "the whole system froze"

23:25-!-coldtobi [~tobi@p5DDF3A1E.dip0.t-ipconnect.de] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
23:25<twb>clanc43: OK understood.
23:25<twb>At a glance this feels like either a hardware fault, or the linux drivers trying to do something the hardware doesn't like
23:26<twb>output of "lspci -nn" would be useful to see exactly what the hardware is
23:26<clanc43>If you give me about 5 minutes, I can get that for you.
23:27<twb>You might as well dump dmesg -H as well, and pastebin both.
23:27<twb>Plus anything else that occurs to you
23:27<twb>The fact CLI works and GUI tends to have problems makes GPU prime suspect
23:28<twb>but because it's a laptop you can't exactly swap components around to see which the problem follows
23:28<clanc43>I concur. As I said in my post, I have been running this laptop dual boot since I purchased it last June
23:28*PovAddict sneaks into these 5 minutes and asks his own question, seeing that there's a smart one in here :P
23:28<twb>I assume windows or cros or whatever is working fine?
23:29<clanc43>Windows 7 is fine. 10 is... a dumpster fire
23:29<twb>clanc43: in lspci -nn there will be a video card string, I would also try quacking for that exact string
23:29<twb>clanc43: I don't care about whether it's ugly, just whether the fault is linux-specific :-)
23:30<PovAddict>clanc43: does "dumpster fire" mean "windows 10 sucks" or "windows 10 has the same specific-to-this-computer problem"?
23:30<PovAddict>we all know about the former :P
23:30<clanc43>Dumpster fire means Windows 10 sucks.
23:30<clanc43>no issues running anything in 7.
23:31<clanc43>Ok, let me reboot and get into the CLI. Guess I'll need to mount up the NTFS and print to file
23:31<twb>note that you will need ntfs3g (not ntfs) to *write* to ntfs
23:31<twb>using a FAT usb key would probably be easier
23:31<PovAddict>clanc43: got a pendrive?
23:31<clanc43>that I do.
23:31<PovAddict>twb: great minds think alike
23:31<clanc43>definately much easier.

23:34<PovAddict>while booted into Debian, if I close the lid, it sleeps, but hours later it spuriously wakes up while the lid is closed

23:35<twb>For that class of problems, the workaround is inevitably laptop-specific
23:35<PovAddict>it once woke up while in my backpack, and when I noticed, it was super hot and battery almost drained (no airflow inside backpack :P)
23:36<twb>This shitty answer is to just shutdown instead of suspending
23:36<twb>Otherwise I would try quacking for the model number + linux. Also check syslog & dmesg &c but doubt anything useful there

23:37<PovAddict>TIL "quacking"
23:37<twb>It could also be simply that bumping it while closed there is enough flex in the lid to hit one of the keys and wake it up
