00:34<twb>I don't really know how to deal with nvidia

00:38<clanc43>go full nvidia, blacklist nouveau
00:38<clanc43>?
00:38<PovAddict>worth a try
00:38<clanc43>ok, so next question, is there a seperate driver for the intel HD graphics?

01:11<lorne>When attempting to install from USB I get a CD Drive not found error even though I've successfully booted from the USB. My netbook, 32 bit, doesn't have a CD drive, so I have no choice but to abandon the install. Is there a workaround?

01:17<twb>lorne: what install medium did you use?
01:18<twb>lorne: that is, what iso URL did you wget
01:18<lorne>USB,
01:18<lorne>http://robolinux.org/ROSSF-membership/xfce-v8/7773409143dl/sf.html
01:18<twb>lorne: also from within the installer, do Ctrl+Alt+F2 and then run "blkid" there and see if it reports the USB drive at all
01:19<twb>lorne: that robolinux thing isn't the official debian installer so I can't support it
01:19<lorne>thanks, it'll take me a few minutes to get back into the install
01:19<twb>!robolinux
01:19<dpkg>Robolinux is a distrbution based on Debian. It is not supported in #debian. http://www.robolinux.org/ . See also <based on debian>.
01:19<jm_>use the debian images if you want support in #debian
01:20<lorne>OK, I'll try a debian image. I've seen this problem many times with other distros.
01:20<twb>Haha the headline of their site is "Why is Robolinux So Popular?" --- which can be read two ways
01:20<PovAddict>ah I remember now
01:20<jm_>we've heard about it when people used tools like unetbootin to write debian image to USB, it's known to cause issues
01:21<lorne>what to use? dd?
01:21<twb>cp
01:21<PovAddict>lorne: I got that problem when trying to install Debian into my sister's netbook, a project which I abandoned for other reasons (the netbook had other hardware problems like a more-broken-than-I-thought lid hinge)
01:21<jm_>cp, dd, cat or win32diskimager in windows
01:21<twb>jm_: is that goodbye-microsoft.com PE32 install method officially supported?
01:22<lorne>i've used dd before, don't know cp
01:23<jm_>twb: it points to debian mirrors so it probably is (and says it's part of debian installer)
01:23<PovAddict>does goodbye-microsoft do a proper two-partition install, or is it more like Ubuntu's Wubi?
01:23<jm_>PovAddict: it's just another way of launching the installer
01:24-!-Dave123 [~dave@cpe-74-74-218-98.rochester.res.rr.com] has joined #debian
01:24<twb>PovAddict: I don't know what "two-partition" means. AFAIK it just runs d-i and you put it wherever you want. I don't think it installs to a foo.ext4 file in C:\, if that's what you mean.
01:25<PovAddict>twb: I meant a dual-boot setup with Windows and Debian each in one partition; but if it just runs d-i then you can do that, or you can wipe the Windows partition, or do anything

05:28<MCMic>Hello
05:29<MCMic>Any idea how I could downgrade bison on Debian Jessie? (I need bison<3.0 for building PHP-5.6)
05:30<babilen>PHP 5.6 is in jessie already.
05:31<SynrG>er, what? "I need bison<3.0 for building PHP-5.6" makes no sense
05:31<babilen>(and builds there just fine)
05:31<SynrG>^

05:31<MCMic>The configure script says so
05:31<SynrG>you're doing it wrong

05:32<themill>well php 5.6 is already in jessie so you don't need to build it, and it clearly does build with bison3 because that's what debian uses to build it
05:32<SynrG>MCMic: building php 5.6 wrong. build it like the official debian package builds it and you'll be fine
05:32<MCMic>themill: I do need to check the code I wrote build before pushing it on PHP-5.6 git
05:32<SynrG>not sure what your goal is
05:32<MCMic>SynrG: I need to build the git version
05:33<SynrG>for what reason?
05:33<MCMic>I need to check the code I wrote build before pushing it on PHP-5.6 git
05:34<SynrG>have you looked at the debian php5 package source?
05:34-!-KindOne [kindone@0001a7db.user.oftc.net] has joined #debian
05:34<MCMic>no
05:36<babilen>Why are you not using php5 as packaged in Debian if you plan to deploy on Debian? (assuming that you do that)
05:38-!-mode/#debian [+l 742] by debhelper
05:38<MCMic>babilen: read what I say, I am modifying PHP code, I need to build it
05:38<ansgar>It sounds like MCMic wants to contribute code to PHP upstream.
05:38<SynrG>MCMic: i don't see any bison-specific configure options, but you might want to run a debian source build and log it, and then compare with your failed vanilla build
05:39<SynrG>i mean, i don't see any such options in debian/rules or any mention of bison in patches
05:39-!-stevenm_ [~stevenm@195.62.218.30] has joined #debian
05:39<SynrG>so i'm a bit mystified as to why your vanilla build would fail with bison <3.0
05:40<SynrG>s/with/without/
05:40<stevenm_>hi, is openl2tp in debian 8? i can't find it - but maybe it is under another name?
05:40<MCMic>SynrG: The debian package source archive already contains the Zend generated files
05:40<MCMic>So it does not need bison for these
05:40<SynrG>gotcha
05:40<MCMic>I’ll use their files
05:40<ansgar>Bah, so php5 doesn't actually rebuild everything? :(
05:40<SynrG>however, php5 does have bison as a build dep
05:40<SynrG>MCMic: is that an assumption or fact?
05:41<MCMic>fact
05:41<SynrG>i mean, it may include them, but you're sure it doesn't rebuild them regardless?
05:41<MCMic>But my configure does say at the end «configure: error: bison is required to build PHP/Zend when building a GIT checkout!»
05:41<SynrG>otherwise, why would the source have bison as a build-dep?
05:41<ansgar>Well, Debian's PHP5 package has: ./Zend/acinclude.m4: bison_version_exclude="3.0"
05:42<MCMic>So it seems to say that bison is only required if you build from git
05:42<MCMic>SynrG: maybe bison 3.0 is used for other parts than Zend
05:42<ansgar>Bad upstreams shipping pre-compiled code...
05:42<SynrG>could be
05:42<SynrG>yep
05:42<MCMic>Only Zend have this <3.0 limitation
05:42-!-gprogjzopiz [~jbk@ALille-458-1-13-159.w86-228.abo.wanadoo.fr] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
05:43<MCMic>ansgar: yes I think official PHP sources outside of the git are shipping the Zend generated files
05:43<SynrG>you *might* be able to get away with a package downgrade to a version from an older release, but only if there are no constraining deps installed on your system
05:44<SynrG>if it were me, i'd play with this in a jessie chroot rather than break my stable system
05:44<SynrG>otherwise it's "build bison locally from source" for you
05:44<MCMic>I’m extracting the files from the package source
05:45<MCMic>it will do for now
05:45<SynrG>good luck

09:52<vrishab>Hi ... how do i know which release a deb package came from ?
09:52<Maulkin>tracker.debian.org/packagename ?
09:53<Maulkin>Or https://qa.debian.org/madison.php?package=packagename
09:53<vrishab>I am in Debian Jessie and I installed midori from sid .. It upgraded a few packages along with the install ... I wanted to know if the upgraded packages are from Jessie or sid ..
09:53-!-RdrOfTheSt0rm [~Icedove@0001f4e3.user.oftc.net] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
09:54<Maulkin>vrishab: try "apt-cache policy packagename"
09:55<Maulkin>vrishab: Though you've now created a FrankenDebian, which may very well be broken. Or likely to break in future.
09:55<vrishab>Maulkin, thanks ... apt-cache policy is for a specific package .. But basically I am looking for a dpkg list command. "dpkg -l" does't list release info. I need something like - ( 1000 packages from jessie ... 10 from sid )
09:57<Maulkin>vrishab: So, dpkg doesn't know about apt repositories, so that's not going to help you.
09:58<zykotick9>vrishab: fyi, it appears from "/msg judd checkbackport midori" that i _could_ have been SSBPed jessie->sid properly... just saying... see "/msg dpkg ssbp" for details.

10:00<vrishab>zykotick9, .. I don't see anything after running "/msg dpkg ssbp" ..
10:00<vrishab>ok .. I see it .. in a tab ..
10:00<zykotick9>vrishab: :)
10:02<zykotick9>vrishab: mixing binaries aross debian versions (stable/testing/sid) _can_ lead to tears... just saying. the SSBP method is much safer.

10:03<zykotick9>vrishab: ok, then have fun.

10:51<somiaj>veggi3s: how are you trying to share folders? I personally just use ssh, but you probably wan't to use a network connenction/sharing setup. It isn't wise to have two different osses writting to the same folder directly.
10:51<veggi3s>when i boot my debian, it says something about failing to start virtualbox server, but i can't see that message in dmesg
10:52<veggi3s>at boot time

11:31<somiaj>note the suggestion of using newgrp will change your default group and may not be what you want. There is also the command 'sg', but in both casees these are really just opening a new shell to run things in, so in essence it really won't change the permissions of the shell running your GUI for instance.

14:11<cx405>Hello, so I am curious. I have added a string " echo -e "We are being parsed by $0 as $(id)">>/tmp/localelog.txt, and added this to /etc/default/locale. So far I got entries for kbd and console-setup. However, if I define some variable inside console-setup (TESTVAR="I survived"; export TESTVAR), then this variable does not survive. Why LANG from /etc/default/locale survives?

20:20<AndyJ>Good morning people. A recent update has knocked over my graphics again (i.e. no GUI desktop) ... I've got things (sort of) up and running again, but am struggling to get any further. I've followed the instructions here: https://wiki.debian.org/AtiHowTo and currently have a desktop, but am unable to run some games (i.e. all 3D games) or Evolution. The error from X windows seems to indicate...
20:20<AndyJ>...that there is no GLX server running. The Card is a Radeon HD6950 (Cayman) Can anyone assist?
20:21<AndyJ>Here is the error when trying to start Evolution: tuxbox:/home/tux# evolution
20:22<AndyJ>(evolution:3750): Gdk-WARNING **: The program 'evolution' received an X Window System error.
20:22<AndyJ>This probably reflects a bug in the program.

20:33<markybob>here's the factoid: Read (at least) the upgrading chapter of the <release notes> http://deb.li/ldcj . In /etc/apt/sources.list, change "wheezy" to "jessie". apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade. 3rd party repos like <dmo> are known to cause problems with the upgrade. See also <jessie sysvinit>.
20:35<AndyJ>Yeah, that's what I was reading when I started quaking in my boots...

21:22<Mattz0r> Hey, I'm getting baffled here, especially with Debian 8.2 and the mass of changes to almost everything..... I'm trying to get an ipv6 tunnel up and running, but can't seem to figure out how the network is managed now... and guides seem to be a rare thing... anyone able to assist at all?
21:22*Mattz0r hates change >_<
21:23<somiaj>Mattz0r: everything is different from what version of debian?
21:23<Mattz0r>think Deb 6 was when I last used it
21:24<somiaj>Mattz0r: network is still managed the same way by default, /etc/network/interfaces
21:24<Mattz0r>hmmm, that file didn't even exist on this install
21:24<somiaj>Mattz0r: there are many tools to help manage it, including one in systemd by that is disabled by default.
21:24<Mattz0r>So I'm trying to figure out how the hell eth0 exists
21:24<Mattz0r>:S
21:25<somiaj>Mattz0r: graphical enviorment?
21:25<Mattz0r>cli only
21:25<markybob>Mattz0r, this gives you problems? https://wiki.debian.org/DebianIPv6
21:25<somiaj>systemd does include it's own networking networkd, but I thought it was disabled by default in debian and you had to enable that to use that over debian's interfaces file.

21:26<Mattz0r>"ifup" doesn't even exist
21:27<Mattz0r>hense, my confusion and frustration
21:27<somiaj>Mattz0r: how did you install debian? What image did you use?
21:27<markybob>Mattz0r, as root? you're doing /sbin/ifup and it's not there?
21:27<Mattz0r>No idea, it was with a cloud hosting provider (Don't really want to spamvertise)
21:27<Mattz0r>only /sbin/ifconfig exists
21:28<somiaj>Mattz0r: well there is the ifupdown package, is it available. Here it is marked as an important pacakge so since it missing something seems strange?
21:28<Mattz0r>Yeah, certainly
21:28<somiaj>Mattz0r: so this is some special install? We can't really guess what they did differently then. But on amd64/i386 ifupdown is an important package and should be installed.
21:28<Mattz0r>I'd have thought so!
