00:00<ryouma>with grub on jessie i can go 640x480
00:01<uso>ryouma: should be possible, fbset can set the framebuffer resolution
00:02<ryouma>the problem is that the jessie font is not readable. so to even set this stuff is a matter of typing without knowing what is appearing on the screen.
00:02<uso>I don't know if you can configure it in a package, but you at least can try to set it in rc.local or after login
00:02<ryouma>on grml i tried kernel option video=640x480 and that did not work, so i presume it will not work on jessie either

00:03<ryouma>rc.local does what?
00:03<ryouma>(i don't reallyknow what a framebuffer is either)
00:04<ryouma>(although i can guess it's basically non-x)
00:05<uso>rc.local is the last (?) script which runs during boot
00:06<uso>and framebuffer is the graphical device which displays your console

00:07<ryouma>ok, so can bootmessages show in a reasonable font if i add to rc.local? (this assumes i can find a way to increase the font or the resolution in the first place)
00:07<uso>ryouma: but before adding something to rc.local try the command at the login prompt
00:08<uso>ryouma: I'm not sure if they stay there after a mode switch, but at least you have a readable login promt
00:08<uso>you can check boot messages later with journalctl
00:09<ryouma>uso: command at a login prompt? not in the shell?
00:09<uso>there may be a better way to set the console resolution, but I neber had that problem so I don't know it, sorry
00:09<uso>ryouma: that';s what I mean, in the shell after login
00:10<uso>(but on the text console, not after a graphical login)

00:11<ryouma>so my ideas so far are to try dpkg-reconfigure console-setup and fbset when i am on jessie. unfortunately, i want it for the boot messages also, precisely because it is when teh suystem is not booting properly that i have to know what the error messages are.

00:19<ryouma>right. i have spent the last 4 months tracking down why (1) jessie did not boot and (2) why x did not boot. now i am trying to make the console legible.

01:45<sagpatke>Hi! I have 1 desktop and 1 laptop running jessie. Is there a way to ensure that the packages installed in both are always in sync? i.e., if I install foo from debian repository on my desktop, I want the same to be installed on my laptop, when both systems are connected to the same intranet.

01:48<markybob>sagpatke, you'd need to script it. you can do https://wiki.debian.org/UnattendedUpgrades and apt-proxy...but not exactly what you want
01:48<twb>Where is /lib/libnss_db.so documented?
01:48<twb>I noticed that e.g. protocols is defaulting to "db files" now instead of just "files"
01:50<twb>Ah libnss_db.so is sleepycat/oracle bdb
01:50<sagpatke>markybob: hmm... okay, will try scripting it. For this, it there a way to hook scripts to the aptitute command? So that, when I install a package foo, or remove a package bar, I want to run a script which will log the actions.

04:32<twb>you want to say "except dependcies of installed packages *as at the installed version*"
04:33<twb>which is what ?narrow does, but it's super confusing
04:33<stevenm_>i can't even remember how i came up with it
04:33<stevenm_>trying work out what it even means
04:33<twb>~M is ?markauto
04:33<stevenm_>is this in https://wiki.debian.org/Aptitude ? i can't find it
04:34<twb>The rest is "not depended/recommended by an installed package"

04:37<stevenm_>in which case - I don't see what the flaw in that logic is
04:38-!-mode/#debian [+l 732] by debhelper
04:38<stevenm_>actually .... select all automatically installed packages ( ~M ) except ( ! ) those which are mentioned as dependency ( ~R ) by anything which is currently installed ( ~i )
04:39<stevenm_>yes?
04:39<twb>yea roughly
04:39<stevenm_>according to this guide it's what they mean anyway - http://algebraicthunk.net/~dburrows/projects/aptitude/doc/en/ch02s03s05.html
04:39<stevenm_>twb, why roughtly? if I've got something wrong let me know
04:40<stevenm_>i guess this would also get rid of suggest also - if they were even an issue at that point
04:40<stevenm_>and if suggest was turned on for auto install
04:40<twb>stevenm_: e.g. the ! only applies to the next term
04:41<twb>aptitude search 'x !y z' only negates y
04:42<stevenm_>but that guide I've linked to says ~R takes a 'pattern' argument
04:42<stevenm_>so wouldn't ~i be that argument?
04:42<twb>stevenm_: yes
04:42<twb>stevenm_: if you write it longhand it'll be more obvious
04:43<stevenm_>how about aptitude -y purge '~M!~R(~i)'
04:44<peter1858>Hi. Think I may have asked this before but is there any way to get a list of packages developed with c++ (maybe some kind of advanced package search that's not on the web site)? 22:27<theanonymous_1>Does anybody have any idea how to fix this issue. I am trying to edit a file sources.list to add a repo and I was editing it over root and closed the terminal and it when I tried to edit it , it still says that vim is editing it. I rebooted my computer and it still persists, any ideas on how to fix this?
