00:00<somiaj>so LS_COLORS is not being set correctly?
00:00<Darby_Crash><Darby_Crash> hi guys
00:00<Darby_Crash><Darby_Crash> i have installed vary kodi packages from debian multimedia
00:00<Darby_Crash><Darby_Crash> i have used dpkg
00:00<Darby_Crash><Darby_Crash> now i have a lot of problems
00:00<Darby_Crash><Darby_Crash> i can't remove packages
00:00-!-Darby_Crash was kicked from #debian by debhelper [flood. Please use http://paste.debian.net instead.]
00:00-!-Darby_Crash [~Darby_Cra@62.19.9.17] has joined #debian
00:00<Darby_Crash><Darby_Crash> how i can solve this ?
00:00<ryouma>hmm, it's only in one particular terminal where it does this
00:00<ryouma>somiaj: it might be the terminal i am using
00:01<somiaj>Darby_Crash: please don't paste and use a pastebin. As for your question, unsure since you have gotten tot he point that dpkg is broken.
00:01<somiaj>ryouma: maybe something happened to your enviroment in a patciular shell.
00:01<somiaj>Darby_Crash: You can try to fix your system with 'apt-get -f install'
00:02<Darby_Crash>somiaj, i have tried
00:02<somiaj>Darby_Crash: once you do that you should be very careful of debian multimedia packages, as they aren't always the best of quality
00:02<somiaj>!debian multimedia
00:02<dpkg>We recommend against deb-multimedia.org; these unofficial packages are known to cause many hard to debug problems. They are not in Debian either because the they are too poor in quality or for legal reasons. See http://deb-multimedia.org/ or ask me about <dmm wheezy>, <dmm jessie>. See also <dmm list>, <dmm mirrors>, <dmm pinning>, <why not dmm>, <dmm remove>
00:02<somiaj>!dmm remove
00:02<dpkg>If you want to remove the packages from deb-multimedia.org and reinstall the packages from Debian repositories, one could do this: dpkg --remove --force-depends $(aptitude search '?narrow(?version(CURRENT),?origin(Unofficial Multimedia Packages))' --disable-columns -F%p); remove the dmm repository from sources.list; apt-get update; apt-get install -f; install the still missing packages which were removed in the former process ...
00:02<ryouma>somiaj: i think it's the terminal itself. will investigate.

00:23<somiaj>that bot had a list of commands to run to remove all dmm packages. Note because you have been messing with things and maybe caused some other issues it may not work, but I would do it
00:23<somiaj>it first removs all dmm packages, it then removes the dmm repo, it then uses apt to try to fix everythign

00:25<Darby_Crash>when i run dpkg --remove --force-depends $(aptitude search '?narrow(?version(CURRENT),?origin(Unofficial Multimedia Packages))' --disable-columns -F%p); i have a error
00:25<Darby_Crash>dpkg want the name of a packet
00:25<dpkg>bugger all, i dunno, Darby_Crash
00:26<Darby_Crash>i haven't added multimedia repository to the sources
00:26<Darby_Crash>i have installed some packet manually
00:27<Darby_Crash>and now my system is broken because if i run apt-get install -f my system want delete a lot of packets
00:27<somiaj>Darby_Crash: could be because the aptitude search string is not getting the package list correctly which is the thing that command is doing
00:28<somiaj>Darby_Crash: and the way you fix that is you go and try to find what core packages are conflict and manually fix it.
00:28<somiaj>Darby_Crash: unsure what the best advise for you in this situation is. You can try to fix your current mess (and learn something along the way). Just let apt remove everything and make sure you get rid of all of the dmm packages in the process and reinstall the packages you need
00:29<somiaj>or do a full reinstall
00:29<uso>Darby_Crash: try to remove all the packages you have installed manually with: dpkg --remove --force-depends packagename
00:29<uso>but do not remove any package which was installed with apt
00:29<themill>Darby_Crash: can you put the command and the full output at paste.debian.net from: aptitude search '?narrow(?version(CURRENT),?origin(Unofficial Multimedia Packages))' --disable-columns -F%p

00:33<uso>themill: does the search for origin even work when he does not have the dmo entries in the source list?
00:34<themill>correct, it will fail if the sources.list has already been changed
00:35<themill>(which is why those instructions are written in the order they are)
00:35<uso>maybe !origin(Debian) or so does the job
00:35<uso>(but may be dangerous when the system is not up to date)
00:37<themill>also backports and mozilla.d.n and …
00:39<uso>searching for ~Vdmo at least will give you some of the packages as a start
00:42<Darby_Crash>uso
00:42<uso>Darby_Crash: the easiest and fastest way probably is to back up your data, resinstall your system and stay away from any 3rd party packages in future

09:24<Oxuodo>Hey guys I'm having some trouble with setting up two different computers both with full disk encryption and a /boot partition on a flashdrive. I was able to set it up correctly and I created a partition on a flashdrive which I set up as my /boot folder and installed grub on the flashdrive. So far so good, my computer was able to run and boot from the flash drive, the problem started when I did the same for my laptop, at first I tried using the same partiti
09:24<Oxuodo>on but realized that wouldnt work so I created a different partition for my laptops /boot and installed grub again because the installer won't let you skip that step. The thing is now I can only boot my laptop and not my desktop. Is there any way to solve this?

13:10<somiaj>neskau: note if you want users to be able to access binaries and run things they need to see the binaries/libaries. But if this is for ftp or sftp there is usually an option to chroot the user in the config of the server
13:10<neskau>>somiaj<: they use SSH to access the machine ... but I noticed that everyone can access the system root folder ... everyone can get out of your directory / home and view other system folders and even other users ...
13:11<somiaj>neskau: if you want to give them ssh access but restrict them, there are varoious ways (and most of them are easily broken if the person gains root access)
13:12<somiaj>neskau: Most of the sensitive stuff on the system the user won't be able to see, but they can see the stuff they need to run commands from there shell. To restrict them from seeing other users stuff, just chmod 750 /home/username for the other users and they won't be able to see other users stuff

13:16<somiaj>neskau: https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/securing-debian-howto/ap-chroot-ssh-env.en.html might be what you want. Though I would look at what you want to achive. If you just want to restrict users from seeing other users personal data, just change permissions of the home dirs to 750 and that will keep users out of each others stuff
13:17<somiaj>If you are wanting to restrict access to the server for security reasons, that is more difficult and as I noted if the user can exploit or gain root access, chroots are really easy to break out of

13:32<somiaj>neskau: correct, so as I said if you just want to keep the user out of sensitive info you can do it via permisions. If you are wanting more restriction you need a chroot (which as I say don't add additional security if your system can be exploited)

13:38<Oxuodo>Hi guys, I wanted to ask a question I wasn't able to find an answer to elswhere. I want to install debian on both my Desktop and my laptop and use full disk encryption on both computers. For that I have a flashdrive which I want to use to be able to boot both my computers. I tried with bios mode and it was not working so now I'm going to try using EFI. Is it posible to have one ESP partition on the flashdrive and use that for both the computers?
13:38<somiaj>neskau: correct, all users need access to home so /home needs to be 755, but this is okay, chmod 750 /home/* will then make it so they can't see into others directories
13:38<somiaj>Oxuodo: ESP is that the efi fat partition?

13:39-!-superusr [~tf@cm56-159-73.liwest.at] has quit [Quit: Verlassend]
13:40<somiaj>Oxuodo: in theory I would say yes, since all it is, is a location of boot info for the bios. But in practice, your laptop and desktop by default will write to the same grub64.efi or whatever file. So you may need to figure out how to modify that so you have a seperate efi file for each system and then the efi bios should see both. If you select the wrong one it will probabaly just error out since the system info is different.
13:40<somiaj>Oxuodo: might be easier to do with a simplier efi boot loader, many seem to like gumiboot

18:46<blast007>iirc, the general recommendation is that you should use the stable installer, do a minimal install, and then upgrade to testing. The "testing installer" is usually for testing the installer, not for installing testing.
18:46<Erbureth>thanks, I'll try the stable netinst then and post results
