05:42<GNA>Hey, I would like to ask if someone knows where I can find the password for mounting my encrypted (LUKS) boot partition. The system was originally installed as wheezy and is based on the encrypted default installation without LVM. The fstab entry suggest that boot was originally a unencrypted ext2 partition. The password is not my normal encryption password. Context: Dualboot Win10 upgrade overwrote the grub entries and thus I need to setup g
05:43<twb>GNA: lost you after "need to setup g"
05:43<twb>In general, if you lost your LUKS decrypt keys, that filesystem is gone forever
05:43-!-eone [~eone@ppp85-140-1-35.pppoe.mtu-net.ru] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
05:43<twb>I don't understand how you went from a regular ext2 /boot to an LUKS encrypted /boot. Can you elaborate?
05:44<GNA>That is correct. But the boot partition was not encrypted in the beginning and I did not actively change that so I figured it may have changed during the upgrade to jessie.
05:44<twb>As a diagnostic, I suggest you pastebin the output of "blkid" (run as root). Also cat /proc/partitions.
05:44<twb>GNA: I would be very very very surprised if upgrading to jessie caused /boot to become encrypted
05:45<twb>GNA: what evidence do you have for that theory?
05:48<GNA>I don't have any. I just see the encrypted LUKS partition in fdisk with the label "boot" that I never created and the EFI partition does not contain the vmlinuz files that I always thought grub would need to function. So I thought it may have changed during the upgrade as I did not actively change this.

05:49<twb>What does blkid say about the partition?
05:50<twb>It seems to me more likely that the partition is garbage, or an unrecognized filesystem (like exFAT or reFS), rather than LUKS

05:55<GNA>sadly I am at work so I can not have a look at it directly :( . Thank you for your help! So debian still comes with a normal separate boot partition that is unencrypted and ext2 or some other normal file system per default? So 1 EFI 1 boot (grub and vmlinuz) and other system and storage partitions.
05:55<twb>I'm not sure what you'll get in debian-installer if you do a guided install
05:56<twb>But after install, upgrade shouldn't change it without asking

05:57<twb>What I am used to, mostly done by hand, is unencrypted /boot and LUKS, then LVM inside LUKS, then / and /home inside LVM.
05:58<twb>Unless grub2 is a whole lot smarter now, you need to have *at least* the kernel and ramdisk stored outside of LUKS.
05:58<GNA>thats what I was used to as well
05:58<GNA>grub is able to do this now but I did not figure it may change without asking me hence my confusion.

06:12<shelmed>Just installed Debian 8 Mate from live image. Would also like to install Gnome 3 alongside Mate. I know this is not 'best practice' but this is a shared computer I want to use Gnome and the other user will only use Mate. 06:13<dpkg>To install GNOME: «apt-get install …» 1. 'task-gnome-desktop' (Debian installer default) 2. 'gnome' (recommended) 3. 'gnome-desktop-environment' (upstream GNOME) 4. 07:36<Jobbe>but I'm too lazy to update the iso with new preseed stuff so i would smack it on the server
07:36<Jobbe>i already have a pxe setup, but i have some computers without ethernet ports
07:37<Jobbe>so i need to use usb adapter without pxe boot rom
07:37<Jobbe>so i though if i could create a usb key, with the debian installer on, and then just tell that usb to grab the preseed file off the server and continue, it would be "almost" as if you were installing from pxe
07:39<jm_>yeah you can do that via the above mentioned boot parameter

07:50<Jobbe>to the preseed.cfg
07:50<Jobbe>easier then adding to the boot menu :)
07:50<jm_>ahh so that works sort of like "include" in preseed, good that it supports that
07:51<Jobbe>yes
07:51<Jobbe>and the desktop.cfg then includes other files on the server
07:51<Jobbe>i just added the first few things inthe preseed.cfg on the iso, like keyboard, language and network settings :)

08:19<dpkg>PPAs (Ubuntu's Personal Package Archives, see <PPA>) are not built against Debian releases, they are built against Ubuntu releases. This makes using packages from them on a Debian box highly unlikely to work out well. Ask me about <ssb> <package recompile> <bobbitt>.

14:17<somiaj>kentsfield: rc.local is the last script run with sysvinit, systemd does startup differently, so you may just have to write a .service file for your script to be run.
14:18<somiaj>kentsfield: i.e. could just be systemd doens't source rc.local and you need to write a .service file, (which to run a script isn't to hard)

14:21<kentsfield>as far as I know, not.
14:21<somiaj>kentsfield: the init system is what does all this 'start stuff at startup'. In wheezy the default was sysvinit, in jessie the default is systemd. the rc.local file was a standard for sysvinit but not for systemd. You just need to learn the way systemd writes startup scripts

14:45<eric9873232>I have a debian "testing" (amd64) that I try to keep up-to-date with aptitude safe-upgrade. However, I fail to install heimdall-flash since aptitude suggests to remove about 50 packages, like gnome, aptitude etc.
14:46<eric9873232>That sounds weird. So I asked for dist-upgrade. The same (I stopped that also).

20:23<viccuad>ftsdc: windows now doesn't shutdown, it tells you it is making a shutdown but it fakes it and does a suspend/hibernate, so it seems faster when coming back up
20:23<Brigo>ftsdc, the problem is in the filesystem repair it -i think you will need a windows for that-.
20:23<sney>ftsdc: ideally, you run chkdsk on it from windows. if that's not an option it may be possible to force the mount anyway, but that might lead to some corruption
20:23<viccuad>ftsdc: dunno how to fix it, look on how to shut down windows properly

21:16<viccuad>then it should be in the sudo group, and that error should not happen
21:17<sney>it's just the existing shell
21:17<sney>either make a new shell (or terminal window or whatever)
21:17<sney>or type newgrp sudo
21:17<ftsdc>is the installer bugged or something?
21:17<ftsdc>ok
21:17<viccuad>ftsdc: doh, you need to logout of the current user session and login again :)
21:18<viccuad>or restart
21:18<sney>or do either of the things I mentioned

21:21<sney>viccuad: neither of those things are true. he can open a new terminal window or use newgrp.
21:21<sney>it's just env stuff.
21:21<Das_Cheese>assuming i get all the dependencies, does installing by deb package work fine with apt-get for future upgrades? i.e. apt-get will be able to upgrade it if it was installed through .deb, right?

21:22<sney>why tell users to reboot or relog when it's not necessary? this isn't windows.
21:22<sney>it just encourages bad habits.
21:23<viccuad>seems easier to tell them to logout the GUI than to again use su, newgrp, exit. less margin for them to do something silly as root
21:23<ftsdc>sney i think you fixed it
21:24<ftsdc>now.. um how do i check if im in the fill
21:24<sney>ftsdc: you fixed it. we just told you how.
21:25<ftsdc>ok so how do i check if im in that file now
21:25<ftsdc>i read that command somewhere
21:25<ftsdc>something like getent
21:26<sney>to check if you're in the sudo group? you can try running something with sudo. or you can do 'groups ruben'
21:27<sney>the angry message from sudo about the incident being reported doesn't matter to you on your own system
21:27<sney>9 times out of 10, "try it and see" is the answer :)
