05:42<GNA>Hey, I would like to ask if someone knows where I can find the password for mounting my encrypted (LUKS) boot partition. The system was originally installed as wheezy and is based on the encrypted default installation without LVM. The fstab entry suggest that boot was originally a unencrypted ext2 partition. The password is not my normal encryption password. Context: Dualboot Win10 upgrade overwrote the grub entries and thus I need to setup g
05:43<twb>GNA: lost you after "need to setup g"
05:43<twb>In general, if you lost your LUKS decrypt keys, that filesystem is gone forever
05:43-!-eone [] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
05:43<twb>I don't understand how you went from a regular ext2 /boot to an LUKS encrypted /boot. Can you elaborate?
05:44<GNA>That is correct. But the boot partition was not encrypted in the beginning and I did not actively change that so I figured it may have changed during the upgrade to jessie.
05:44<twb>As a diagnostic, I suggest you pastebin the output of "blkid" (run as root). Also cat /proc/partitions.
05:44<twb>GNA: I would be very very very surprised if upgrading to jessie caused /boot to become encrypted
05:45<twb>GNA: what evidence do you have for that theory?
05:48<GNA>I don't have any. I just see the encrypted LUKS partition in fdisk with the label "boot" that I never created and the EFI partition does not contain the vmlinuz files that I always thought grub would need to function. So I thought it may have changed during the upgrade as I did not actively change this.

05:48-!-corw [] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
05:49<GNA>I am just trying to repair my grub and the files that it expects to find are nowhere to be found so I guessed they may have wandered into that encrypted partition that fits the normal boot size (200MB)
05:49<twb>I do not trust anything fdisk says
05:49-!-ralala [~smuxi@] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
05:49<twb>What does blkid say about the partition?
05:50<twb>It seems to me more likely that the partition is garbage, or an unrecognized filesystem (like exFAT or reFS), rather than LUKS

05:55<GNA>sadly I am at work so I can not have a look at it directly :( . Thank you for your help! So debian still comes with a normal separate boot partition that is unencrypted and ext2 or some other normal file system per default? So 1 EFI 1 boot (grub and vmlinuz) and other system and storage partitions.
05:55<twb>I'm not sure what you'll get in debian-installer if you do a guided install
05:56<twb>But after install, upgrade shouldn't change it without asking
05:57-!-aleksander [~aleksande@] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
05:57<twb>What I am used to, mostly done by hand, is unencrypted /boot and LUKS, then LVM inside LUKS, then / and /home inside LVM.
05:58<twb>Unless grub2 is a whole lot smarter now, you need to have *at least* the kernel and ramdisk stored outside of LUKS.
05:58<GNA>thats what I was used to as well
05:58<GNA>grub is able to do this now but I did not figure it may change without asking me hence my confusion.

06:06<l4mbd4>GNA: i used a ext4 boot partition to go with cryptstup + lvm2 + btrfs
06:07<twb>you shouldn't need lvm if you have btrfs :-(
06:07<l4mbd4>there are some functions that are practical to have, and it is almost no speed loss
06:09<l4mbd4>you can do lvm snapshots for example for situations where you really need to clone on a block level, then you can also do more complicated raid stuff (since btrfs raid is still quite unstable etc.)

06:12<shelmed>Just installed Debian 8 Mate from live image. Would also like to install Gnome 3 alongside Mate. I know this is not 'best practice' but this is a shared computer I want to use Gnome and the other user will only use Mate. Not sure which would be the best Gnome package to install without bloating the system. Should I use gnome-desktop-environment or Tasksel? Thanks
06:12<twb>shelmed: it depends how much of gnome you want
06:13<jm_>!install gnome
06:13<dpkg>To install GNOME: «apt-get install …» 1. 'task-gnome-desktop' (Debian installer default) 2. 'gnome' (recommended) 3. 'gnome-desktop-environment' (upstream GNOME) 4. 'gnome-core' (like 3, minus end-user applications) 5. 'gnome-session gdm3 network-manager-gnome' (minimalist, not recommended). You will need Xorg installed as well, ask me about <install x>.

07:37<Jobbe>so i need to use usb adapter without pxe boot rom
07:37<Jobbe>so i though if i could create a usb key, with the debian installer on, and then just tell that usb to grab the preseed file off the server and continue, it would be "almost" as if you were installing from pxe

14:09<kentsfield>I could use a hand with my new server
14:09<kentsfield>I got an awesome 19" server for free and installed debian jessie amd64
14:10<kentsfield>works like a charm, but somehow I can't manage to autostart some services and programs
14:13<kentsfield>I edited the rc.local file, which didn't work. then I made a startscript inside init.d with runlevel 5 and updated it with update-rc.d scriptfile defaults
14:13<kentsfield>Which outputs an error message :/

14:16<kentsfield>Well, though I am not new to linux (especially debian), I am still not a very advanced user... So, what do you mean, blast007 ?
14:17<somiaj>kentsfield: rc.local is the last script run with sysvinit, systemd does startup differently, so you may just have to write a .service file for your script to be run.
14:18<somiaj>kentsfield: i.e. could just be systemd doens't source rc.local and you need to write a .service file, (which to run a script isn't to hard)
14:19<kentsfield>I don't understand :(
14:19-!-Guest2758 [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
14:19<blast007>kentsfield: when are you trying to do, specifically?
14:19<kentsfield>actually, I just want screen to be started on startup ;)

14:20-!-cmacq2 [] has joined #debian
14:21<kentsfield>as far as I know, not.
14:21<somiaj>kentsfield: the init system is what does all this 'start stuff at startup'. In wheezy the default was sysvinit, in jessie the default is systemd. the rc.local file was a standard for sysvinit but not for systemd. You just need to learn the way systemd writes startup scripts
14:21<kentsfield>ah okay :)

14:23<somiaj>kentsfield: some quick docs I found, not sure how good it is, but it describes how to create a .service file. And then once you have a service file you can just put it in /etc/systemd/system and 'systemctl enable file.service' and systemd will run that at boot

20:23<viccuad>ftsdc: windows now doesn't shutdown, it tells you it is making a shutdown but it fakes it and does a suspend/hibernate, so it seems faster when coming back up
20:23<Brigo>ftsdc, the problem is in the filesystem repair it -i think you will need a windows for that-.
20:23<sney>ftsdc: ideally, you run chkdsk on it from windows. if that's not an option it may be possible to force the mount anyway, but that might lead to some corruption

20:49<Das_Cheese>right, so I wanted to ask the people of this channel, I have 2 computers with Debian, on Testing branch. Both lost internet functionality, complaining about a lack of network-manager. In testing, are they trying to move from network-manager to something else? or perhaps was I just being careless?
