04:06<Guest2814>I need a little help: I've changed all my sources to stretch and update/upgraded, and i wanna move to sid but the source 'sid' only works for the main source. do i leave 'stretch/updates' and 'stretch-updates' how they are or change them to testing?
04:06<Guest2814>if that made any sense.
04:07<ansgar>Guest2814: There are no seperate security or proposed updates suites for unstable.

07:34<peter1138>ary, there's some software that will map joystick input to MIDI events. You then just need to hook up a drum synth of some sort.
07:34<peter1138>Or just hit the joystick.
07:36<ary>drum synth you mean hydrogen???
07:36<peter1138>Yeah, that would work.
07:36<ary>thanks mate

07:59<MeanderingCode>to be compeletely clear, what i have is an FAI installation with an rc.local that calls `ansible-pull` to do most of the provisioning. i want to watch the progress of the ansible playbook, and if there's an error and the playbook fails, i use the return value in a conditional that echos some info and calls `read` to wait for the user to press enter before finishing the init and spawning the VTs
08:00<MeanderingCode>except that doesn't work. the console just shows that it's waiting for rc.local. if i hit enter, it finishes (i have it purposefully erroring, atm)

11:17<SuperSQL>Hi, I am not sure if this is the right room for this but I have a problem with the c++ program I'm trying to make. It is TCP server that is multithreaded so parent for each accept creates child that then executes tcp stuff and once it's done it calls shutdown and then closes the socket handle. Now the problem that I'm having is somehow socket handles doesn't close properly (even tho there wasn't any errors while calling close function)

11:18<SuperSQL>Problem now is that those sockets add up as CLOSE_WAIT when I look at the lsof
11:18<SuperSQL>those things won't go away until the main thread does
11:19<SuperSQL>Does anybody know about this problem? Is this a OS bug or what? In the specification for socket this is the only way of closing the socket for good but it isn't
11:20<SuperSQL>Version that I have is Debian GNU/Linux 7 (wheezy)
11:20<SuperSQL>And I'm trying to compile it under g++
11:21<SuperSQL>The only workaround I can find is to just increase maximum number of opened files in the ulimit section but that's not really a good way for a thing like that.

22:13<somiaj>tester1: so is your problem with jessie or testing? Oh so this is a gnome thing specifically? I don't use gnome so I don't know much about it. Two things I have seen in here. 1) Make sure your graphic drivsr are properly loaded and compadable with gnome (what graphics card/drivers are you using)? 2) Make sure your gnome config is good, sometimes making a new user and using system defaults fixes things if something is ...
22:13<somiaj>... causing problems from the user config.

22:14<somiaj>Well if you are running testing I can say that during this gcc5 transition it might be hard to debug. If this is ahppening in jessie, make sure you are not mixing jessie packages with something else if you want help tracking down the issue.
22:14<somiaj>also if you are running testing you should be in #debian-next

22:17<somiaj>tester1: everyone was not using testing, but that is not important. Testing is always undergoing transitions. Depending on the time it can be very stable to very fininky. Right now testing/unstable are undergiong some major transitions and I expect testing to be a rocky ride for a while (espically when the desktops start transitinition to their next version for desktop users)

22:21<somiaj>tester1: there is always a group who wants to use testing because stable is too outdated. Though with backports now being offically provided for the release and lots of effort here to point out that stable + backports will probabaly suit many peoples needs over testing (which can be finky at times). That is my current suggestion (10 years ago backports were not a common thing to be proivded for stable)

22:22<tester1>I did not know that thank you.
22:23<somiaj>also testing can be so different. During a freeze as a release is getting close testing is really relaiable. After a release and during major transitions that is a different store (I've not upgraded my testing/unstable machine in a while just waiting for this to pass, though I mostly use stable for my work machien these days)

22:28<tester1>OK. I can't recall exactly, I was using Sarge and Etch back then. I remember stable being quite outdated then. Thanks again for the pointers and the overview of how things have changed.

22:29<dpkg>Shiny New Shit Syndrome is a serious disorder, which usually breaks out into an epidemic every time something new is released. If you have SNS, ask me about <backports> and <ssb>; these are better options than upgrading to <testing> because it is a <moving target>.

22:30<tester1>!ssb
22:30<dpkg>First, check for a backport on <debian-backports>. If unavailable: 1) Add a deb-src line for sid (not a deb line!); ask me about <deb-src sid> 2) enable debian-backports (see <bdo>) 3) aptitude update; aptitude install build-essential; aptitude build-dep packagename; apt-get -b source packagename; 4) install the resultant debs. To change compilation options, see <package recompile>; for versions newer than sid see <uupdate>.
22:30<somiaj>tester1: again always a personal choice. Due to backports some things (such as kernels and hardware support is much better). but also expect desktops to lag in debian stable as they are big projects that are hard to backport.
22:33<tester1>I see.
