00:10<afh>Hi. I was watching a video and suddenly my system froze and the computer rebooted with a message I could not take a picture, something along the lines "rebooting in 30s", "returning control to tty" and "kernel offset at 0xsomething". I am looking for relevant log files to file a bug report but I cannot find any. dmesg and others don't seem to have logged it. Where should I look?

15:40<petrucci>I can yes. iwlist or iwconfig gives me that
15:41<petrucci>But isn't that the power of the signal?
15:41<amdgoon>i'm barely familiar with this, so my answers can be considered a guess...
15:41<amdgoon>it seems common for the dB spec to be . . . less than well defined it seems
15:43<petrucci>hum... Ya... I don't think the dB spec is what I want.
15:43<petrucci>nevermind then, I'll figure something out.
15:43<amdgoon>my wireless router gives a signal strength and a noise level in values that suggest they are dB
15:44<amdgoon>-37.20 for and -80.00 for noise level, but no dB behind it. I'm left to assume these are dBm values....

So even if p11-kit does (somehow) solve this problem, it's out of my reach because I don't have computers powerful enough to compile chromium

22:40<twb>Although note that e.g. chromium doesn't get security updates, and because GUI browsers are badly designed, you get feature updates (read: new bugs) instead of just security fixes.
22:41<ryouma>so jessie main repo chromium gets updated to new upstream? i'm ok with that. but jessie main repo iceweasel does not?
22:41<ryouma>(and chromium doesn't get along with me either)
22:43<ryouma>currently i am using deb http://mozilla.debian.net/ jessie-backports iceweasel-release
22:43<twb>ryouma: well I've had problems with it e.g. when oldstable got a "security" update that added a PDF reader to chromium
22:43<ryouma>(and debian extensions are beginning to break at that level, so i will have to use mozilla.org versions to not break them)
22:43<twb>Because that as a side effect broke *all printing* due to my lockdown of allowed URLs
22:43<twb>(all printing in chromium, I mean)

22:45<twb>ryouma: I don't really know about that, sorry :-/
22:45<ryouma>ok
22:46<ryouma>are there going to be debian packages for extensions on the debian mozilla repo? or does that really make no difference for security?
22:47<twb>Who runs the "debian mozilla repo" ? That doesn't sound like a standard Debian repo

22:49<ryouma>how do i find out what extensions are there (if any)?
22:49<twb>I don't see any extensions in there
22:49<twb>http://mozilla.debian.net/pool/
22:49<twb>AFAICT that's just debian packages of iceweasel itself, releases newer than currently in jessie (v38)
22:50<twb>You might also want to look at https://security-tracker.debian.org/tracker/source-package/iceweasel
22:50<ryouma>twb: https://www.debian.org/releases/jessie/amd64/release-notes/ch-information.en.html says "Iceweasel and Icedove will also be kept up-to-date by rebuilding the current ESR releases for stable." which maybe means that it will not be security updates but new versions?
22:51<twb>ryouma: right, that's what I meant by "new bugs" above
22:52<ryouma>yeah, so that's fine. but are they going to upgrade hte extensions also? otherwise they will break.

22:53<somiaj>ryouma: esr updates versions slwoer than the main brach. I think the esr version lasts for a bit over a year. During the life of the esr version it is only bug fixes/security fixes to the esr version. But once the esr version is replaced by the newer esr version, security will upgrade to that (happenes about 2 to 3 times during a debian release)
22:53<twb>Other than the basic checks needed to get onto mozilla's site in the first place

22:56<ryouma>it sounds like jessie = esr and my apt line above = release. any reason to prefer one over the other? when taking extensions into account?
22:56<twb>ryouma: it probably depends on whether the extensions are committed to supporting ESR?

22:58<somiaj>chromium on the other hand just gets the new version when security holes are fixed since chromium doens't support an esr release
22:59<twb>Yeah I don't blame debian for not having the manpower to backport security fixes
22:59<somiaj>(jessie also makes no claims to give security support to any browsers except those too since they have so many issues)
22:59<ryouma>me neither
22:59<somiaj>twb: which is kinda ironic that the original reason for having to debrand firefox is not an issue in debian anymore.
22:59<twb>I blame the browsers for being too big and unwieldy and modular to allow efficient patching
22:59<twb>And I blame all the users for continuing to use them anyway
23:00<somiaj>it gets worse, I can't do my job with out one since everything is a web based app these days.
23:00<twb>right
23:00<twb>I even have to ship flash because U. Queensland lecture videos need it
23:00<ryouma>i'm fine with the esr policy, and i'm fine with the release version. but i don't know, between the two, which is compatible with extensions (either the appropriate debian or a.m.o), secure, and not buggy. on a relative scale.
23:01<twb>somiaj: for what I do, mostly, I can just use curl and XSLT
