01:31-!-Jahwis [~private@work2.work.maz.net] has joined #debian
01:33<ryouma>i want to write a shell function that takes a list of paths (abs or rel) as stdin and copies them to dest preserving parents. thus, "echo ./a/b/c/d/e/file | myfunc b" will create or update b/a/b/c/d/e/file and "find /etc -type f | myfunc b" will create or update b/etc/passwd. i find that rsync "--files-from=- ./ "$@"/" works perfectly for rel paths but not for abs paths. i wonder if parallel cp is a good option i
01:33<ryouma>nstead. if possible, i'd also like it if the source and any existing dest file are not identical file contents, the old one gets backed up to .~1~ .~2~ etc. so no files that get overwritten are lost. is this possible?
01:33-!-davi [~davi@2001:4b98:dc0:51:216:3eff:feae:792] has joined #debian
01:36<jm_>have you tried callig rsync with "$@" instead of ./"$@"
01:36-!-aranax [~aranax@186.151.47.155] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
01:36<ryouma>jm_: that is actually a space between / and "
01:37<ryouma>jm_: rsync requires the ./ in order to anchor the piped paths or os
01:37<ryouma>so*
01:38-!-mlundblad [~marcus@c-5490e355.014-990-7570702.cust.bredbandsbolaget.se] has joined #debian
01:41<twb>"$@" exactly is special in sh and bash
01:41-!-mathieu [~mathieu@nie67-1-78-226-109-145.fbx.proxad.net] has quit [Quit: Konversation terminated!]
01:41<twb>If you put ./"$@" then it is basically wrong
01:42<twb>That might not be the actual issue you're seeing, tho. "$@" semantics matter primarily if you have whitespace in paths
01:42-!-wavekidsjp [~wavekidsj@h219-110-168-169.catv02.itscom.jp] has joined #debian
01:43<themill>What is $@ supposed to do if there are multiple destinations given in any case? rsync isn't going to copy to multiple destinations, so you probably only want $1 there
01:43<twb>http://sprunge.us/KUOS
01:44<ryouma>who is putting ./"$@"? not me.
01:44<twb>ryouma: you put "$@"/ tho
01:44<themill>"$@"/
01:44<twb>That will add / only to the last arg
01:44<ryouma>yeah so the last arg would get a / in case it is a symlink i think
01:44<themill>I can't see any use for $@ in your command at all
01:44-!-melmothX [~melmoth@56-246.dsl.iskon.hr] has joined #debian
01:44<ryouma>ok, pretend i never gave an example. have a solution? :)
01:45<twb>Most of the time, "$@" is more right than $@ or $* or "$*".
01:45<themill>as I said, "$1/" would seem more sensible
01:45<twb>ryouma: what's your actual goal? To copy a tree from one place to another, excluding some parts?
01:46<ryouma>twb: maybe it was just habit. i intended to only have one arg there. so i could have done "${1:?}/" or some such. ignore it.
01:46<twb>Incidentally, #bash is the best place to ask these questions
01:46-!-lepalom [~quassel@soho.upc.es] has joined #debian
01:46<ryouma>they can handle this type of question?
01:46<ryouma>oh, that's the one with the jerks on it
01:47<themill>But $@ isn't the problem here, it's the ./ forcing files-from to be relative
01:47<jm_>yeah you can't have it both ways using that
01:48<ryouma>jm_: :(
01:48<jm_>try using / instead and convert all the files to abs path -- man realpath
01:48<twb>jm_: or -L to find
01:48-!-Slydder [~chuck@ip1f12da05.dynamic.kabel-deutschland.de] has joined #debian
01:48<ryouma>i don't want to copy the abs path though
01:49<twb>But that will make you cry in different ways
01:49<ryouma>yeah i don't want to mess with that
01:49<twb>Actually if you just do find $PWD instead of find ./ they'll be absolute
01:49<twb>ryouma: okey dokey
01:49<ryouma>never mind the symlink thing
01:50<twb>I'd be more inclined to use cpio
01:50<twb>find ... -printf0 | cpio --pass-through <magic>
01:51-!-melmothX_ [~melmoth@33-186.dsl.iskon.hr] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
01:51<themill>(If your example of /etc is really your use case, then look at etckeeper)
01:53<ryouma>actually the goal is a generic shell function that i can pipe anything to, whether created by a grep or find or anything else, and it will contain abs or rel paths, and it will do the right thing regardless
01:53<twb>http://sprunge.us/Liff <-- nearly right
01:53<ryouma>s/it/the input/
01:53<twb>I still suspect xyproblem
01:53*themill hands ryouma some filenames with spaces or newlines in them
01:54<twb>http://mywiki.wooledge.org/BashFAQ/010 similar examples
01:55<ryouma>newlines would screw it up and i will think about print0 later. but spaces should be ok if it is done right.
01:55-!-vrkalak [~vrkalak@2600:1011:b06c:3790:3a59:f9ff:fedc:7f73] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
01:55<themill>well what you are currently doing will die with spaces
01:55<ryouma>twb: no xyproblem. i have implemented this in several ways over many years. i want it solved correctly.
01:56<ryouma>themill: hmm, which will? rsync?
01:56<ryouma>twb: where does your cpio /not/ work? with abs?
01:56<twb>ryouma: I assumed you wanted to not src/a to go to dst/a not dst/src/a
01:57<twb>Otherwise you wouldn't need the / suffix on rsync's dst

01:57-!-daniel_ [~daniel@94.190.188.75] has quit []
01:57<ryouma>i'm fine with dst/src/a
01:58<ryouma>in the past i tried cpio -pdm --quiet "$@"; i don't know why i didn't stick with it
01:59<twb>when you're overwriting a file that's already there, rsync will be much faster?
01:59-!-mikarch [~Mikkel@85.218.244.93] has joined #debian
01:59<twb>maybe your git history for your scripts will tell you why? ;-)
02:01<ryouma>i am always going to pipe files, not dirs
02:01<ryouma>we are talking pre-git here
02:01-!-wizor [~yo@00020e6a.user.oftc.net] has quit [Quit: quit]
02:02<jm_>cvs then :P
02:02<ryouma>yeah rsync is preferable because of its idempotency. however, i don't think it can do the backup extension thing the way i need. also it cannot take either abs or rel.
02:03<ryouma>hence i was thinking maybe i should use parallel and a script to do the cp and backing up
02:04<twb>I'm bored of this problem :P
02:05<ryouma>hehe, git was my first vc that i really used much and i still don't write detailed messages to it. actually i have comments that say why cpio does not work.
02:05<ryouma>welp, another 15years before i solve it well then

11:20<dpkg>Kali Linux (http://www.kali.org/) is a security and penetration testing distribution from the creators of <backtrack>. 23:38<benediktXVII>I would like to install Debian 8.2. I am running mint at the moment. However I am going to install a new HDD into my laptop but would like to preserve my home folder with all application settings and personal data. Can I just copy my home folder on an external HDD and copy it back into the /home partition I create on the Debian install ?

23:43<Yst>benediktXVII: Yes you can.
23:44<Yst>Some of the software might be a bit different, so you'd need to install the missing things.

23:45<Yst>Obviously the settings will only be read by the application that they are from if that application is installed, but other than that, it'll work perfectly.
23:45<benediktXVII>ok, thank you very much.
23:46<Yst>benediktXVII: I'm assuming you are the only user on both systems? If not, if your user numbers dont' match, you might get permission errors, but nothing that root can't fix.
23:46<benediktXVII>yup I am the only user
23:46<Yst>Okay, it should work just fine then.
23:47<benediktXVII>I already installed several distros and always kept /home on a different partition. But never created a new install on a new HDD keeping my /home.
