02:10<somiaj>encfs: there are lots of people here. Best to just ask your question, many ignore attempts to get attention.
02:10<encfs>I'm having a problem installing Debian where root and home are mounted on btrfs subvolumes
02:11<encfs>After the installation process it stops working
02:12<encfs>it doesn't work I mean
02:12<somiaj>I personally have on experience with this, but if you could give more details maybe someone else will have info
02:12<somiaj>What part doesn't work, the install, or the reboot into the installed system?
02:12<encfs>Here are the steps I made using the debian website
02:13-!-Out`Of`Control [] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
02:13<encfs>The problem comes in after the installation seems fine, I restart
02:13<encfs>I boot and it seems fine
02:13<encfs>it starts loading and then it can't mount root
02:14<encfs>I have btrfs-tools installed
02:14-!-ol [] has joined #debian
02:14<encfs>but it doesn't seem to recognize root
02:14<somiaj>sounds like an initramfs issue, where the modules needed to mount root during the boot to then load additional modules are not present
02:14<somiaj>yea that really sounds like an initramfs issue, and I'm unsure if you have to do anything special for the initrd image to use a btrfs subvolume as root
02:15<encfs>I have no clue what to do
02:16<encfs>I just already have arch and gentoo installed on btrfs subvol's
02:16<somiaj>ahh doing this with debootstrap and not the installer. Again I'm unsure since I don't use btrfs, but my guess is making the systembootable is the issue
02:16<somiaj>and my guess is it is something with building the initrd image to recognize btrfs subvolumes
02:16-!-tiago_tm [] has quit [Read error: No route to host]
02:16<encfs>Well I've replaced btrfs subvols with ext4 partitions
02:17<encfs>and the same exact process
02:17-!-tiago_tm [] has joined #debian
02:17<somiaj>same issue?
02:17<encfs>and it worked fine
02:17<ohithere>Could be as easy as specifying the btrfs module in /etc/modules and rebuilding the initrd?
02:17<ohithere>Total guess though.
02:17<somiaj>yea, then that is the case, the default initramrd just is missing the ability to read the btrfs subvolume, trying to find info on this for you
02:18<encfs>dude you are awesome
02:18<encfs>I'm still a beginner
02:18<encfs>I tried in august for a few days
02:19<encfs>then tried last month for a few days
02:19<encfs>It's friday night so I thought why not try again

02:22<somiaj>encfs: I can't find any decent google hit that I think would be helpful, but found a few including this bug
02:22<judd>Bug in src:linux (open): «fail to boot btrfs rootfs»; severity: important; opened: 2014-05-13; last modified: 2014-05-13.
02:22<encfs>So does that mean I'm screwed?
02:22<somiaj>again it just sounds like there is something wrong with your initrd image making it so it cannot load the correct modules to read the subvolume from btrfs. But I have no experience here so I couldn't say what would be missing.
02:23-!-barbanegra [] has joined #debian
02:23<somiaj>No it just means you need to modify your initrd image to include the correct modules to read your root partition
02:23-!-grrrrrr [] has quit [Read error: No route to host]

02:23<encfs>is that a reasonable task for a beginner
02:24<somiaj>I think so, it just requires some research and learning. I'm trying to find some key things to try.
02:24<somiaj>also ohithere could have had the right suggestion
02:24-!-rmdashrf [] has quit [Quit: WeeChat 1.2]
02:24<encfs>How long will you be around?
02:25-!-glebihan [] has joined #debian
02:25<somiaj>encfs: two things I would check, first check /etc/initramfs-tools/initramfs.conf, what is MODULES= set to?
02:26<somiaj>encfs: second, you can list specific modules you need to include in /etc/initramfs-tools/modules, so it could just be add the btrfs modules needed and then rerun update-initramfs
02:26<somiaj>this shoudl be doable in your chroot
02:28<encfs>I have to reinstall on a virtualbox vm
02:28<encfs>it'll be like 15 mins
02:28<encfs>will you be here?
02:29<somiaj>its almost 1am here, I just can't sleep, so I may or may not be, and also may give you zombie advise. (:
02:29<somiaj>but just ask your question, there are people from all over in here, and many will respond if they know the answer. May just have to be paitent and wait for an answer.
02:29<encfs>either way I appreciate you taking your time

02:31<somiaj>encfs: just ask your question. No need to ask me, ask the channel. If i'm around I may answer if I can.

02:36<tifeiMh2080>oops. hah.
02:36<somiaj>encfs: he seems to think your issue is with your fstab entry for /, that coudl be it. debootstrap is fun to play with, but it takes some time to learn how to correclty make it bootable.
02:37<encfs>I tried to use the debian live cd
02:37<encfs>but I couldn't mount the partitions
02:37<encfs>and have debian recognize them
02:37<encfs>I'd mount them
02:37<encfs>to /mnt
02:38<encfs>debian would say something like, "Error: root not mounted to /target
02:38<encfs>So I mounted to /target

02:39<encfs>I am using efi
02:39<encfs>where do I get that?
02:39<somiaj>debian-live images don't boot efi (at least last I checked)
02:39<somiaj>encfs: do you need non-free firmware for your network card?
02:39<dpkg>somiaj: vedi
02:39<somiaj>hmm, that use to point to the intsaller. (:
02:40<encfs>well I already have arch and gentoo installed and booting from systemd-boot
02:40<somiaj>grab the image you need, put it on a usb with cp debian.iso /dev/sdX, and then boot from that.
02:41<somiaj>Or keep playing with trying to make your install from debootstrap bootable. It is doable, just requires some work. (:
02:41<encfs>I think I'll have my hands full for now

04:38<encfs>The problem is that the btrfs kernel module depends on the libcrc32c module, but that dependency is not being found by depmod and so initramfs-tools won't include libcrc32c into your initramfs when it includes btrfs. The workaround is adding libcrc32c to /etc/initramfs-tools/modules and updating your initramfs.

16:32<tip78>today i've 3 init.d-scripts failed to start

16:42<BreadBand>Sometimes when apt-get install slim && apt-get remove lightdm, it also wants to remove xfce-tools(somethiing).. And sometimes don't. A behaivior i have noticed when installing several laptops. My question is why? If i remove that, apt-get autoremove wants to remove pretty much everything that comes pre-installed with the xfce enviroment
16:43<tip78>So what i did yesterday at 22:39:02 ? I was trying to tune system (debian 8 btw)
16:43<tip78>I've changed some files in /etc/pam.d/ for login security, but i have return back all changes from backup
16:43<tip78>I've changed few files in /etc/ and /etc/security but returned all back also
16:43<tip78>I could turn off few SUID-flags in /bin/*, but i returned it back too if i remember correct...
16:43<tip78>There is an opinion that such behavior can happen because of selinux, but i didn't install it (however chcon is in the system)

17:13<somiaj>BreadBand: taks-xfce-desktop is just a metapackge that pulls in dependencies. If you remove one of the dependencies you need to remove the meta package. If other packages get removed or not is due to if they have the Auto or manual flag set
17:14<somiaj>if you installed with the meta package they whould all have an auto flag on them unless you specificly installed or changed one of the depends.
17:16<BreadBand>somiaj: But when removing task-xfce-desktop, and after that performing apt-get autoremove, it wants to remove a lot of stuff that i want to keep. The only thing diffrient from default xfceenvo i want is to have slim instead of lightdm, and to remove lightdm. But if i run apt-get remove lightdm, task-xfce-desktop will also be gone
17:17-!-tip78 [~alex@] has quit [Quit: Ухожу я от вас (xchat 2.4.5 или старше)]
17:17<somiaj>BreadBand: as I said, this is due to the packages having an auto install flag assoicated with them and you removed the metapackage that is holding them all in place
17:17<somiaj>You can change this flag on some key packages to make it so it wont' want to autoremove things anymore

17:21<somiaj>BreadBand: it doens't randomly appear. It is how it is designed to work
17:21<somiaj>You install package X, package X pulls in packages A, B, C, as dependencies. If you want to remove package X shouldn't it also remove all the dependencies it pulled in?
17:21<somiaj>To change this behavior use aptitude or apt-get install on key packages to hold the rest in

But i know for sure when i have installed debian before on other computers that i have been able to just remove it with apt-get remove, and the only package that has been removed was lightdm itself
17:24<somiaj>BreadBand: this depends on how you installed xfce4
17:24<somiaj>if you install it via the full task meta package it will remove everything
17:24<somiaj>if you use just the xfce4 meta package and install lightdm seperatally, removing lightdm will not remove the large task package that is holding everyhing in

17:25<somiaj>BreadBand: change the auto flag on the package 'xfce4' should fix it
17:26<somiaj>or just run apt-get install xfce4, this will force that package to be manual install and it won't autoremove it (and it will hold int he rest of the desktop)
17:27<BreadBand>Ok, well thank you once again :) I will try to change the auto flag, i was just curious why it didn't behave the same but now i got my answer

19:41<jmcnaught>redwards: you'll probably want to ask in #debian-next (the support channel for testing and unstable). Also check the topic there, there is a big gcc5 related transition in progress right now, lots of stuff is broken while that gets worked on
19:42<jcrowgey>Hi debian room, I have a question about video encoding and I'm trying to figure out what room to go chat about it in.
19:42<jcrowgey>I popped in here just because I'm a debian user and I'll almost certainly be using debian to solve my problem.
19:43<jmcnaught>jcrowgey: you can ask your question here, if there's a more appropriate channel then maybe someone will direct you there
19:44<jcrowgey>Basically, I have two video files which both say they are ISO Media, MP4 Base Media v1 [ISO 14496-12:2003] when I run `file' on them. But my Samsung TV plays one but not the other, so there must be some difference.
19:44<redwards>yes I know sid breaks, I'm not complaining - such is the cost of having latest versions. I'm just after the easiest way to deal with broken stuff.

19:44<PovAddict>jcrowgey: 'file' doesn't go too deep into video files
19:44<jcrowgey>FWIW, my debian distro plays either one without a problem, using `mpv'
19:44<redwards>thanks jmcnaught so I guess a fresh install even might not help. will just wait for now maybe start a stable vm for it
19:44<PovAddict>jcrowgey: install ffmpeg, run 'ffprobe' on both files, pastebin the output
19:44<jcrowgey>PovAddict: indeed, and I know next to nothing about this, so my question is reallly about how to figure out whatever the relevant difference is and then do whatever transcoding needs to be done.
19:45<jcrowgey>PovAddict, will do so now, thanks for the advice....
19:45<jmcnaught>redwards: you could also check to see if the stuff you need newer versions of is available in backports.
19:46*Marillion one need the newest packages of anything, unless you will find bugs
19:46<jcrowgey>btw, pastebinit seems broken ... :(
19:48<jmcnaught>jcrowgey: try it with "-b" and the url of a different pastebin like the ubuntu one
19:48<jcrowgey>jmcnaught: I'll try that next time. I've doing it the old-fashioned way now with using a web-browser :)
