01:13<ditty>is totem back to original in latest release?
01:14<somiaj>,v totem
01:14<judd>Package: totem on amd64 -- squeeze: 2.30.2-6; wheezy: 3.0.1-8; jessie: 3.14.0-2; stretch: 3.18.0-1; sid: 3.18.0-1
01:14<somiaj>ditty: what do you mean by that?
01:14<ditty>they updated it to shit
01:15<ditty>i want the original
01:15<PovAddict>sounds like you have an upstream problem :P

01:17<somiaj>I would adress upstream on that question and maybe be clear what it is you don't like/features you are missing or that you just want a clasic mode
01:18<ditty>wats the best version of debian to download?
01:18<somiaj>debian always suggests stable (which is now jessie)
01:19<somiaj>oldstable (wheezy) only gets support for about a year (down to about a half year now) after the release of jessie
01:19-!-martn [~martn@72.0.72.144] has quit [Quit: leaving]
01:19<somiaj>(though wheezy-lts will pick up some of this, for the most part unless you have need to support server software on a wheezy-lts you should use jessie)
01:20<PovAddict>"best" for what purpose?

09:42<babilen>BreadBand: Just mark everything as manually installed that you want to keep. This is one of the major problems with the way Debian installs desktop environments and it is bloody annoying
09:42<babilen>dpkg: remove rhythmbox
09:42<dpkg>To remove rhythmbox without removing the rest of gnome, mark the dependencies of gnome as being manually installed (see <unmarkauto>). The gnome <metapackage> will still be uninstalled. aptitude unmarkauto '~R^gnome$' '~RRecommends:^gnome$'; aptitude remove rhythmbox
09:43<babilen>dpkg: install xfce
09:43<dpkg>To install <Xfce> on established systems, ask me about <install x>, then: «apt-get install xfce4 xfce4-goodies». To install using Debian-Installer (if not using Xfce CD-1): from the 'Software selection' dialog, choose "Xfce" (use space bar to toggle selections), then "Continue"; an Internet connection may be required to obtain these packages.
09:43<babilen>BreadBand: Some of these ^^^ might help (the rhythmbox and Gnome part is unimportant, adjust it for your case)

12:44<wesh>this usb has the debian installer on it btw, i need to drop some firmware files to /firmware

12:45<PovAddict>somiaj said "if it has a readonly file system (such as the one with the debian installer) it won't be able to be write ether"
12:45<rled>Hi, what do I need when I'm told I don't have a 'polkit agent' running?
12:45<somiaj>wesh: the debian installer is an iso9660 or something like that file system like a file system that is on a cdrom which is not a read/write file system. So the file system itself doesn't support write.
12:46<somiaj>wesh: but you can use cfdisk, or some other partition tool. Make a partition of the unused stuff at the end of the flash drive, and then put your firmware there
12:46<somiaj>(well put a file system then your firmware)
12:46<ompaul>!install
12:46<dpkg>There are a myriad of different ways to install Debian. See http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/debian-installer for a list of images and ask me about <netinst>, <various cd1> and <firmware images>. 12:47<ompaul>if you are looking for firmware enhanced
12:47<somiaj>wesh: so your actualy question is what is the best way to get non-free firmware on the isntaller?
12:47<ompaul>isntallers
12:47<wesh>says i should drop the firmware files to either the root of the drive or /firmware, so thats why im here :)
12:47<ompaul>it is mentioned there
12:47<ompaul>!firmware images
12:47<dpkg>Unofficial <netinst> images - containing non-free Debian <firmware> packages - for installing Debian 8 "Jessie" are available from http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/cd-including-firmware/current/ . See also <install guide>.
12:47<somiaj>I would personally suggest the unoffical firmware images (/msg dpkg firmware images) and just use that. That is if you are okay with the netinstaller and don't want a full cd/dvd image.
12:48<wesh>yes @somiaj i tried with my second usb but it did not seem to detect the firmware.
12:48<ompaul>wesh: what are you trying to install on, and how did you write the install usb

12:48<wesh>i wrote the usb with dd and i am installing it on a old notebook i have laying around
12:49<somiaj>wesh: the firmware installer correct (NOt just try to put firmware on the usb)?
12:49<PovAddict>wesh: it says you have to put it in the root directory or in /firmware of some removable medium, like a USB drive; it doesn't say it has to be the same as the install media
12:49<ompaul>if the notebook has ethernet and you have ethernet then you should be ok
12:49<ompaul>with netinstall
12:49<wesh>oh so i miss read it this whole time :(
12:50-!-rled [~Icedove@85-76-16-139-nat.elisa-mobile.fi] has quit [Quit: rled]
12:50<PovAddict>so putting it a second pendrive should work
12:50<PovAddict>or another partition, as somiaj said
12:50<ompaul>if the hardware is very old you may need to enumerate the usb ports
12:51<wesh>very well, thanks for all the information, if the usb method fails i suppose i shall use the firmware based images, thanks again for the help :D
12:51<ompaul>and install from the first usb port
12:51<somiaj>wesh: my personal approach to firmware is this. The netinstall contains a fully functional minimial system, so I just skip the network part. Copy the firmware over after the install is on my device, get my network up, then install additional stuff.
12:51<somiaj>wesh: but the unoffical firmware installer will avoid all these issues as it comes with the firmware ont it.
12:51<ompaul>wesh: if you have ethernet then you shouldn't face problems unless it's a 486 or something like that

12:52<ompaul>PovAddict: don't we all hate the firmware corrupted world :-/
12:53<wesh>well im off, thanks for everything :)
12:53<ompaul>wesh: another way to isntall if you have a lot of problems is to extract the disk and install in a different box

13:02<somiaj>bitlan: looks like you can get version 6.2 in jessie, and version 1.9.4 in jessie backports.
13:02<somiaj>sorry 1.6.2 in jessie
13:04<bitlan>somiaj: so.... apt-get install -t backports nginx ? and i will not lose current configuration?
13:04<somiaj>bitlan: jessie-backports not backports, and nginx-extras not nginx (and you need to have jessie-backports in your sources.list)
13:05<ompaul>bitlan: nginx might not like you doing that ...
13:05<somiaj>debian packages are designed to be upgradeable and shouldn't overwrite current configuartions. But you do have to be careful, newer versions may not be compadiable with old config files.
13:06<bitlan>ok.. let's try

13:19<somiaj>bitlan: we don't support thrid party packages here, which is where ngnix is installed from. You have the choice to use ngnix's packages, in which case you should get the extras from there too. You can also just use the version in jessie-backports if you want a version newer than is in jessie.
13:20<ompaul>bitlan: so the thing is this ... you should read the report from your machine - not installed
13:20<somiaj>well was installed from, looks like it was removed. So decide which version you want to run and then get the appropraite extras package.
13:21<ompaul>if you want security take the base package from jessie and keep with it

13:32<guruprasad>I run a mail server on Debian Jessie using Exim and Dovecot. I use the split configuration provided by Debian. Though I have added my own configuration to exim, I still find that a lot of unnecessary configuration gets included by default. Is there a better way to disable those other than commenting it out manually?
13:32<luichi>how can i uninstall a package that i installed using configure, make, make install ??
13:33<guruprasad>For example, till now I had no users on the server except root. Today I created a user and all the mails for a virtual dovecot user started getting delivered to the local user since that configuration is included by default without any macros
13:33<bitlan>ompaul: thanks for help :)
13:33<PovAddict>luichi: if you kept the source/build directory, sometimes you can use 'make uninstall'
13:34<PovAddict>luichi: otherwise, you have to go and delete the installed files manually
13:34<guruprasad>luichi: Not possible unless the package provides an uninstall target. make -n install will list the actions performed by make install.
13:34<guruprasad>You can manually remove those files

13:43<ticklishstranger>PovAddict, question: (I'm not sure how to phrase this) A manually compiled package (into dedicated directory) can still interact with other programs normally, right? Do I have to compile every dependency manually if that dependency is available from apt?
13:44<PovAddict>compiling a program and installing it to its own directory doesn't affect how dependencies are searched while compiling
13:44<PovAddict>so you can still use the system, apt-installed dependencies
13:44<PovAddict>you may need to alter some environment variables if you want to eg. run the program from a terminal without the full path
13:46<PovAddict>for example, if I compile kdevelop4 from source and install it into ~/local/kdevelop, I can use the system's Qt4 and kdelibs4, but I need to add $HOME/local/kdevelop/bin to PATH, and add $HOME/local/kdevelop to KDEDIRS
