04:21<jm_>encfs: no, I assume that's done by default by initramfs tool anyway - pass debug to kernel and it will write a lot of details in the file mentioned by the man page (probably better option than having it dump to console)

05:20<JetpackJohn>Greetings. I've been trying to get help from my local LUG with this, but to no avail. Every time I copy large amounts of data (500+ MB) from any source (network, HDD, SDD) to external storage like an SD card or a USB stick, my machine becomes almost unusable until the transfer is done. It seems te cp process fills memory with cache buffers and then, of course, can only copy data to the device at its
05:20<JetpackJohn> max speed which is often in the 5-10 MB/s range if I'm lucky. What can I do to fix this issue?

05:23<JetpackJohn>Knowing what I do about how data buffering works in Linux, I can't explain the cause of this problem. It also doesn't seem to effect network->network, HDD->HDD, network->HDD, etc. transfers. I'm not sure what makes them different aside from their much shorter duration.

08:04<Sp0nken>I will try today too :) Does anyone know how to get rid of the "low disk space" warning in MATE? Not sure wich program that checks this. I have a bunch of nearly full NTFS-3G drives that i don't care about getting cleaned, but i'll keep getting this annoying warning even if i tick "do not show warnings for this filesystem again"

08:54<Sp0nken>I think i might have found a solution. It's a bug! I found this https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings-daemon/+bug/881376 and even if it's about ubuntu, back in 2011, it seems to be still going in Debian Jessie.. I tried the workaround #20 on that site and it seems to work, let's see after next reboot :)

The situation; On my laptop (bart) which is running with systemd is connected through ssh, with another physical machine (ned) and is NOT having systemd configured. 11:51<PovAddict>that's like refusing to install Debian 8 because you "don't support lennart" so you don't want systemd
11:51<planetmaker>anyhow, do you know http://choosealicense.com/ ?
11:51<PovAddict>there are valid reasons to dislike systemd, "not supporting the author" is not one of them :P
11:52<marioxcc_>PovAddict: What you says makes sense. However, what if you do not want to be subject to the author's decisions?.

11:53<marioxcc_>planetmaker: Yes, I have seen that site. It may be good as a starting point, but it don't contains much useful information.
11:54<planetmaker>however I usually would recommend to add the 'or any later versions'. It will make it easier for your code to live on
11:54<marioxcc_>planetmaker: Right.
11:54<PovAddict>planetmaker: I want to see if I can put all my code into the public domain in my will; "death plus 70 years" is ridiculous
11:54<planetmaker>at least that's my reasoning which works for me. If I put code under GPL I do that for the reason that as many people can profit from it - provided they play by the similar rules
11:55<planetmaker>public domain means 'free use from now on'

13:21<MarkedOne>yeah.. i know that... but i dont get it why it is not rewriting the same line
13:21<somiaj>unsure if this is due to the terminal not accepting standard location/placement calls, or something with the size of the terminal not matching with what hte calls are doing.
13:21<PovAddict>ah yes that's another possible reason
13:22<MarkedOne>it is default debian jessie instalation
13:22<PovAddict>maybe wget is sending CR, the terminal *is* understanding it properly, but the progress line is 1 character too long for that terminal size, so it wraps into two lines
13:22<PovAddict>I have seen that happen in some strange environments where wget can't get the real terminal size properly
13:22<MarkedOne>may it be becouse of ma locales?

13:25<somiaj>Vtec234: I think it would be okay, but you may want to double check what dependencies it needs. If it needs a dependency that is in sid but not stretch you may have to then follow this around until all dependencies are satsified.
13:25<PovAddict>MarkedOne: try resizing the terminal window
13:25<MarkedOne>or you somiaj :)
13:25<PovAddict>maybe that makes it notice the real size
13:26<somiaj>MarkedOne: the issue is with the terminal you are using or the size, or what it thinks the real size is. The issue isn't with wget. So debug the terminal you are using.

14:06<somiaj>MarkedOne: I'm out of my league here. My best guess is there is something misconfigured with your terminfo or something related to this (terminal type) that is making it so wget is not able to move the cursor to the start of the line and rewrite the current line.
14:07<somiaj>MarkedOne: I'm unsure the best way to track this down, but you should try your headless server, maybe it doen'st have this bug. Maybe you have a .terminfo or .termcap file in $HOME messing with things. But it is most likely some strange issue with a terminal config issue and any program which uses this to locate/write over an existing line will have the same effect

15:25<martin_>valdyn, I know the partition was encrypted, I thought the standard way was to encrypt sda1 then put a PV on top of that, however file -s /dev/sda1 gives: "/dev/sda1: LVM2 PV (Linux Logical Volume Manager), UUID: 6AKGpk-CTtd-E2qg-Jy18-ih2y-adEU-If9Xtn, size: 1000203091968"

17:36<Gerowen>Anybody know why VLC won't display streamed content locally if you're trying to stream it to a H264 file? I'm using an easycap card to stream my kids' VHS movies to files. They're getting stored to files just fine, but if I choose H264 as the codec it doesn't display the video/audio, it just freezes, although it continues to save it to the file just fine. When I choose OGG as the codec it displays locally just fine, but the video quality bottoms out.

17:44<valdyn>Gerowen: first: ogg is not a codec, its a container, h.264 is a codec
17:44<PovAddict>Gerowen: you're saving into a local H264 file, and *then* once the capture is done, you're trying to play it with VLC and it doesn't work?

17:45<valdyn>Gerowen: storing a h.264 file makes no sense at all, codecs dont work outside containers (well, most of them)
17:46<Gerowen>I'm storing the stream as an MP4 file, H264+MP3, and it works just fine. When I use the OGG container I am using Vorbis/Theora. Using the OGG container, it both stores it to the file AND displays it locally just fine. When storing it to the MP4 container, it saves it to a playable file just fine, but the local display freezes. It will continue to save it correctly after the local display freezes, but I'd like to be able to watch it while it saves.

17:47<PovAddict>Gerowen: what program are you using to do the capture card -> file encoding?
17:48<Gerowen>Easycap USB capture card, VLC is doing the capturing and encoding both.
17:48<PovAddict>I never tried using VLC for capturing and encoding
17:48<PovAddict>but if I use ffmpeg to capture from v4l and save to an .mp4 file, I can't play the file with another program, because the file is invalid until it's done
17:49<PovAddict>there is some necessary data written at the beginning of the file (I guess it's video duration etc)

17:50<PovAddict>Gerowen: btw I converted some VHS to DVD-Video, it was a pain >_<
17:50<Gerowen>PovAddict: Makes sense. The files are being stored correctly, and they play, but there's an option to "display locally", to basically view the stream as it's being encoded, and that is what's not working if I choose the MP4 container. Of course I could just start the movie and let it play and listen for the VCR to stop, :P
17:51<PovAddict>it's strange though
