01:28<r0nn>Hi guys, i'm trying to set up ubuntu on a new gt72s 6qe and it keeps freezing at the login screen. Same in recovery mode, can't any option. I think I have to set up nvidia driver but since i can't log in or get into a cmd line I don't know what to do. I couldnt install via chroot as the installer doesn't recognize the gc. Any idea ?
01:30<rowan>nvidia driver?
01:30<r0nn>yes
01:30<r0nn>it's a gtx980m
01:30<r0nn>no optimus
01:30<r0nn>had to boot with nomodeset
01:30<rowan>did you install the proprietary drivers?
01:31<r0nn>no that's what i'm saying. I cant log in nor get a cmd line
01:32<rowan>does the ubuntu live cd work
01:33<r0nn>yes
01:33<r0nn>but right after the install it freezes on the login screen
01:34<r0nn>and it's a proper freeze so I don't have access to log or anything
01:37<rowan>does your laptop have an option in bios to switch the gpu? my ibm lets me switch between intel/motherboard graphics and a amd gpu
01:38<rowan>i hope you have that option
01:39<r0nn>apparently i can only switch gpu under windows ... wich is not installed
01:40<r0nn>stupid new hardware ...
01:41<rowan>your absolutly sure you cant do it in bios? i couldnt get yhe gpu on my ibm to work so i just used the crappy intel one
01:42<rowan>it prob under one of the power saving options
01:43<r0nn>yes i'm absolutely positive. The bios is very simple and doesn't have any power management option except for usb ports
01:44-!-aranax [~aranax@190.148.42.64] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
01:44<rowan>what happens if you remove the gpu card?
01:45<r0nn>I think it's possible on this laptop but I just got it yesterday so i'd like to avoid opening it already

01:57<r0nn>maybe I failed my chroot

01:58<r0nn>does ubuntu uses different vesa mode once it's installed ?
01:59<r0nn>cause the live cd works well

02:03<r0nn>which one ? From what i saw (cause i just got the laptop yesterday) i need to be under windows to switch
02:03<r0nn>ah no, no optimus

02:05<jnr2820>so, is there any bios settings that allow just picking the nvidia?
02:06<r0nn>no, there is a button near the keyboard that allows me to switch but apparently only under windows

06:21<EmleyMoor>I am trying to set up autofs to mount my shared NFS systems on my latest machine. I am using the standard auto.net script. When I try to access the filesystems from one particular host, aunomount generates the error mount(nfs): no hosts available - but still sees the names of all exports from that server. It can access filesystems from my other server, and also, the two servers can see each other's files
06:21<EmleyMoor>ystems. The new machine can manually ...
06:21<EmleyMoor>... mount the filesystems, but autofs does not work, just for one particular server with the new machine as client. How can I trace what's wrong?

14:42<whtemple1959>centrx: so for example install lxde-core? and if I decide on kde would that be kdebase?
14:42<centrx>right

15:20<user01>somiaj, yep
15:20<somiaj>user01: does it have a hardware switch toggle for read/only
15:21<user01>somiaj, yep ive tried both ways
15:21<somiaj>user01: what file system are you trying to mount? Does it happen to be an image from a debian iso?
15:22<user01>somiaj, oh it isnt a debian iso -- let me check fs
15:22<somiaj>some file systems (like iso file systems) are by default readonly and there is nothing you can do to change it
15:23<somiaj>so it is either a hardware toggle or the file system that is doing htis

15:25<user01>im thinking the video file was larger than allowed for vfat
15:25<somiaj>yea unsure here, been so long since I've used vfat for big files. YOu could easily look up what the limit is
15:26<somiaj>or maybe the sdcard is just having issues or even the adaptor
15:27<user01>somiaj, hmm im looking at the file and it was only around 1GB . . .
15:27<user01>i show limit to be 4 GB
15:28<user01>somiaj, should i just copy everything off and reformat the disk?
15:28<user01>ive only had it a couple months -- it is 128 GB sandisk
15:28<somiaj>unsure here, but that is one way to do it. I can't think of what the issue could be.

16:20<user01>somiaj, you know what i think it could be -- exfat file system
16:20<user01>somiaj, this time ive formatted as fat32
16:20<somiaj>user01: that could be it, you need special fuse drivers to acess exfat which I'm unsure how well it works.
16:21<user01>somiaj, well ive formatted to fat32 this time -- bleh
16:21<user01>but it is needed to work with the mp3 player i think
16:22<user01>wish mp3 players would just support ext2 or something

16:27<user01>somiaj, i think that means no way to check filesystem
16:27<user01>among other things
16:28<viccuad>is there a way to safely call "sudo apt-get install foo" inside of a shell script, knowing what is behind the sudo? if you use it like that, then you are going to get a "Press enter your sudo password" before seeing the package list

21:22<Hydroxide>FlashSlayer: you probably want to ensure that you're on local time, yes. it's fine. also you want to upgrade past Windows XP as soon as possible since nobody is providing security fixes for that any more! :)

21:22<FlashSlayer>Hydroxide, UTC

21:24-!-gsb [~gsb@117.220.79.133] has joined #debian
21:24<Hydroxide>FlashSlayer: when you cleanly power off or reboot, Debian will write the local time to the hardware clock instead of the UTC time.

21:25-!-elanw [~elanw@182.254.226.182] has joined #debian
21:25<Hydroxide>FlashSlayer: with this setup, either OS will try to fix the clock by an hour twice per year when the local time changes, so you may need to adjust it twice per year manually or allow NTP to handle that
21:26<Hydroxide>FlashSlayer: but equally the time should display correctly in CET and CEST in both OSes instead of having a 1 or 2 time zone delta
21:27<Hydroxide>FlashSlayer: if you're time syncing in both OSes there will be no big issue - but in general windows simply keeps track of whether it has made that adjustment or not
21:27<Hydroxide>FlashSlayer: and with /etc/adjtime set to local, linux changes its definition of how it interprets the hardware clock offset tw\ice per year to match the time zone
21:27<FlashSlayer>Hydroxide, I see. Currently I'm using only Debian but after booting to Windows it will probably change the clock.
21:28<Hydroxide>FlashSlayer: so if the system is running in Debian when the time change happens, Linux will keep the running system time the same but will change by one hour the value it writes to disk upon shutdown
21:29<Hydroxide>FlashSlayer: well I mean Linux will adjust the time displayed as well but it tracks time internally with the unix epoch (seconds since Jan 1 1970 UTC)
21:29<Hydroxide>FlashSlayer: so yes, you understand correctly
21:30<Hydroxide>FlashSlayer: but if you then fix the clock in windows, both should agree until the next time change in April
21:30<Hydroxide>FlashSlayer: and windows time sync can do the fix

21:52<Brigo>FlashSlayer, what do you mean for disable?
21:52<FlashSlayer>Brigo, not to start automatically on bootup
21:53<Brigo>FlashSlayer, it should do it, it just a link reset
21:54<FlashSlayer>well, I will check after reboot

21:54<Brigo>FlashSlayer, i think there isn't such unit.
21:55<FlashSlayer>there is
21:55<FlashSlayer>but if systemd provides its own ntp client, I will probably uninstall ntpd
21:56<Brigo>FlashSlayer, no, there isn't, at least in my debian 8.2 it is generated on boot in /run/systemd/generator.late/ntp.service
21:56<Brigo>and it just run /etc/init.d/ntp start
21:57<Brigo>I have try it, i think it works nice.
