00:01<bahamat>I've installed jessie, as the kernel boots the display shuts off. Anybody know what's going on there? I've tried vga=771, didn't help.
00:02-!-tjader [~tjader@189.60.212.152] has joined #debian
00:02<nevyn>when does it shut off?
00:02<nevyn>is it a bad x11 config?
00:02<bahamat>Very early. I get about 3 or 4 lines of text after grub, then black.
00:03-!-LikeVinyl [~pelado@00013c79.user.oftc.net] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:03<bahamat>Same with single user mode.
00:04<bahamat>This didn't happen with wheezy.

00:06<twb>vga=X is pretty old strategy
00:06<twb>I think nomodeset is a better way to say that now
00:06<twb>!kms
00:06<dpkg>Kernel Mode Setting (KMS) has graphical modes initialized by the Linux kernel instead of X. It is hardware dependent, introduced in Linux 2.6.29. Enabled via modprobe as of xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.9.1-2 and xserver-xorg-video-radeon 1:6.12.192-2. To disable, edit /etc/modprobe.d/{i915,radeon}-kms.conf or boot with the 'nomodeset' kernel command line parameter. http://wiki.debian.org/KernelModesetting

00:08<bahamat>twb: Yeah, since I can't boot and edit that file I was trying to do something that I can set from the kernel boot params.
00:08<bahamat>nomodeset, I think that's what I needed.
00:08<twb>bahamat: uh, you can set boot options from grub interactively, as long as you haven't locked it down
00:08<twb>hit e or Ctrl+e or something
00:09<bahamat>But I can't edit /etc/modeprobe.d/*
00:09<twb>Just boot with nomodeset first. If that fixes it, you can worry about editing modeprobe.conf.d/*
00:09<bahamat>Yeah, trying nomodeset now
00:09<twb>if it doesn't help, that edit is irrelevant
00:09<bahamat>That worked.

09:26<oct>Is there a way to resolve all deps at once from a specific repo so I can pin them easily?
09:26<inkbottle>petn-randall: Doesn't seem to raise error related to that (only two errors which are related to some button things)
09:27<Hydroxide>oct: I had to do what you're doing for my prior laptop, which was an Optimus nvidia+intel laptop. I still have backups from that computer which include that config. I've removed the irrelevant packages and put the remainder here: http://paste.debian.net/318541/
09:27<Hydroxide>oct: I had to figure that out by trial and error through the dependency hell. :) if your laptop is not optimus or you don't care about the optimus bits you might be able to use fewer of those packages.
09:27<Hydroxide>oct: also I probably wrote this was when wheezy was stable and jessie was in development, so it may have changed since then.
09:28<Hydroxide>oct: it looks like jessie had frozen though and I was probably running testing or unstable so it may be fine
09:29<petn-randall>oct: How are you having dependency hell in a stable release??
09:29-!-linux-modder [~Corey84@209.222.0.99] has joined #debian
09:29<Hydroxide>oct: err, you may have to remove the blank lines after each Explanation line. my original file had none in those positions, but my editing inadvertently changed that.
09:29<Hydroxide>petn-randall: oh it can totally happen with these types of pins.
09:30<Hydroxide>petn-randall: however it's more just having to iterate through all the packages you need to pin, rather than mismatches or similar
09:30<Hydroxide>petn-randall: so it's always completely solvable in a stable release
09:30<Hydroxide>petn-randall: the priority -1 breaks some of the automatic dependency resolution
09:30<petn-randall>Hydroxide: Again, this should not happen on a stable release. If there is, it's an RC bug. If you're mixing releases, that's a problem as that shouldn't be done in the first place.
09:31<Hydroxide>petn-randall: it's not an RC bug, it's as designed. priority -1 means apt won't consider the available dependencies as valid installation candidates.
09:31<Hydroxide>petn-randall: even though it sees them and they satisfy the metadata.
09:31<petn-randall>Hydroxide: Oh, I see, you mean you're pinning things to -1 and checking what breaks.
09:32<Hydroxide>petn-randall: right. oct wants to whitelist a specific set of packages from contrib and non-free and forbid the rest, as indeed I did for mostly the same set of packages.
09:32-!-star_prone [~star_pron@176.223.162.254] has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
09:32<user01>is there anything unusual then in my Xorg.0.log? http://pastebin.ca/3223298
09:32<Hydroxide>petn-randall: so of course if you forbid by default and whitelist too few packages, apt is unhappy.
09:33-!-star_prone [~star_pron@176.223.162.254] has joined #debian
09:34<Hydroxide>petn-randall: it _would_ be nice if there was a way to raise the priority of a package together with its dependencies, to avoid this trial and error, but that isn't currently part of the apt preferences language so if it is a bug it is of wishlist severity.

20:27<Sp0nken>I have a question about key-based authorization and sftp. I've set up my ssh server to forbid user-password login and only accept rsa-keys. The problem is that i seem to be unable to connect to the server with a FTP-client now. Have tried to add the private key in FileZilla but i only get a message that the keyfile is in the wrong format, and that it can't use password protected files. Any suggestions how to get this to work withou

21:33<somiaj>This sounds like it is due to the locking tool and giving access back to both monintors. It could be due to the fact that the non-free driver implements its own form of kms and xrandr compadability. I'm unsure if you should report the bug directly to nvidia or to gnome.
21:34<somiaj>TaTuMT: How doy ou know these .tar.gz files fix the problem if you can't extract them? Again if it is screen locking you can disable the screen lock timer (sometimes flash wont' do this automatically). If it is just xblanking, run 'xset s off'. Either should work and not require installing some random third party software.
21:34<Arcade>not sure either. It works fine if I turn on the TV first before unlocking the laptop
21:34<somiaj>TaTuMT: to unzip the tar.gz, run 'tar xzvf file.tar.gz', and then I have no clue what files are in it or what to do with them. Just don't mess with files controled by dpkg, this means copy things to /usr/local/foo not /usr/foo
21:35<somiaj>Arcade: sounds like some issue with xrandr and multiple screens. Unsure if you are loosing connenction with your EDID of the TV and confusing the driver or if it is how gnome deals with locking mutitple monintors and it has a comadability bug with nvidia. Either way I would just learn to unblank first.

21:40<somiaj>yea I'm unfamilar with such hardware, so you can't just boot off of a usb live image or rescue image for arm?
21:41<Cris>somiaj, I did the INSTALLATION part , after doing the u-boot part, I restart the mirabox, and it boot from the SD
21:41<Cris>but now, cant boot without the SD

21:49<TaTuMT>Okay, you got me in fear. My problem is this: When I go watch a flash transmission in fullscreem, after a few minutes the screen is blocked because there has been no movement on the mouse or keyboard. I do not want to disable screen lock or increase the waiting time until the lock. I just want there to be no screen lock when I'm using an application in full screen mode. I found an article a person who went through the same
21:49<TaTuMT>situation and solved the problem: http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=117800. What do you suggest I do?
