00:57<somiaj>Celelibi: not really, giving users the ability to mount arbiatary file systems would be a very easy way to compermise a system.
00:57<somiaj>Celelibi: you can configure them indvidually in /etc/fstab if this is something a user mounts regurally. I'd just use sudo
00:58-!-brlancer [~brlancer@99-98-209-99.lightspeed.tukrga.sbcglobal.net] has joined #debian
00:58<Celelibi>I'd be ok with some forced options like nosuid, user=myuseruid etc.

00:59<Celelibi>I mean, I could always start a VM with this file as HDD and write anything I want in it.
00:59<Celelibi>Why make the VM mandatory.
00:59<Celelibi>?
01:00<somiaj>Celelibi: well it is more how to give users permision when it can so easily be exploited by users putting their own file systems wherever was convient.
01:01-!-Noskcaj [~Noskcaj@101.173.198.8] has joined #debian
01:01<Celelibi>forbidding bind and other restrictions are ok too.
01:01<somiaj>Celelibi: any reason sudo is not an option? Either that or as you said
01:01<Celelibi>I am root. It's just annoying to switch to root.
01:01<somiaj>hence the use of sudo, no switching goes on.
01:02-!-chasmo77 [~chas77@158.183-62-69.ftth.swbr.surewest.net] has quit [Quit: It's just that easy]
01:02<Celelibi>It doesn't change anything.
01:02<somiaj>you could probabaly just put a group with setuid on mount if you really wanted to, this is just a big security hole.
01:02-!-Se-bash [~seba@host25.190-30-13.telecom.net.ar] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
01:03<Celelibi>I wonder if fuse could be an answer to that issue.

01:04<somiaj>Celelibi: I was jsut going to mention that. FUSE already has blocks on it so users can use it
01:05-!-diega [~diega@179.36.151.185] has joined #debian
01:05<Celelibi>I'll look into that. That may be really nice. All it will still lack is the ability to deal with partitions.
01:06<Celelibi>But maybe there could be a fuse driver for that.
01:06<Celelibi>(It would be very easy to write actually.)
01:06<somiaj>Celelibi: again why avoid sudo and set up NOPASSD for mount commands of a paticular form, I think that would be easiset. then it is mearly just typing sudo in addition to the mount command
01:07<diega>hi, I'm in testing, and after some upgrade my BT speakers started to being recognized as input devices apparently by udev. How can I make an explicit rule to recognize it as what it really is?
01:07<somiaj>this way you can avoid mounts happening by your user in arbitary places, but still not have to worry about permissions
01:07<somiaj>diega: you should ask testing questions in #debian-next
01:07<Celelibi>somiaj: because that's something I believe should be doable fully by a user. We're talking about writing a simple regular file.
01:07<diega>somiaj, thanks!
01:07<Celelibi>This regular file just happen to have a format that the kernel knows about.

01:10<somiaj>Celelibi: There are reasons for this, but that could be a feature request for fstab, have it be more versitle

01:10<somiaj>Celelibi: that way you could enter in a directory of mount points and a directory of files that a user is allowed to mount.
01:10<Celelibi>For a kernel development point of view, I think fuse is a better solution.

01:11<somiaj>yea that is supose to run in userland, but mount is already set suid so users can use it with fstab, the problem is you need one line for every mount point. Be nice if there was some wild cards you could use to add some varity. (though I guess you ahve to be careful because with links and looping this could maybe get back to the same problems)

01:13<Celelibi>I would prefer to keep the kernel as minimal as possible, unless there's a big performance penalty (like with the network stack). And foreseeing all the possible security issues with users mounting arbitrary file systems may be a bit hard.

01:15<somiaj>Celelibi: yea this is out of my experience. I just take the tools supplied and understand why the don't let users mount anything they want. But agree it would be nice to have more freedom and I think the fstab file (or maybe userland fuse) is the way to go.

04:04<blubee>hi guys i'm really hoping that I can get some help sorting this issue out
04:05<blubee>I installed debian with kernel 3.16 i installed the nvidia drivers restarted and everything was fine
04:05<blubee>then i update the kernel 4.2.0 from backports to allow my bluetooth LE device to work
04:06<blubee>restart and then my screen goes into oh, oh something went wrong with the only option is to log out
04:06<blubee>I figured out that I could boot into another session by editing the boot image to something like linux /boot/.... quiet splash 3
04:06<blubee>which I am currently doing to talk to you guys on IRC
04:07<blubee>if I restart the computer again goes back to showing the "oh, oh something went wrong screen"

04:15<blubee>the logiinmanager is never visible
04:15<blubee>when i get that oh oh message, just a gray screen with the option to logout
04:16<towo`>blubee, after looking in the log, i was right, the driver is started without error

16:10<somiaj>Guest7356: you do not want to mount the same file system on two different machines (even if one is virtual). But you can use various file sharing software like nfs or samba between the systems. I just use scp to get data around my virtuial machines, but I do ti rarely.
16:11<somiaj>Guest7356: the issue is you don't want the host and the guest both mounting the same filesystem without knowing what the other is doing (this will corrupt the file system). That is why you should use a network filesystem (Designed for this) over a virtual network.
