04:48<x86_64>jm_, possible, but right before the install yesterday; i replaced the CMOS battery and found no dust nor out of place components
04:48<x86_64>or could it be the presence of a network card? The installation that failed detected a network card and tried to obtain an IP from it without success. The installation that succeeded (once) could not detect a network card and asked me for the correct driver which i never provided with. This evidence supports the possibility of this: On the failing installation; i pressed some the SysReq and 'RE' then i got this flooding my screen:

09:10<x86_64>OKay
09:10<x86_64>i have good news and bad news
09:10<x86_64>I have talked earlier about install debian 8.2 on a 14 year old computer which caused kernel panics and stuff soforth
09:11<x86_64>good news: it was not a hardware problem
09:11<x86_64>bad news: 8.2 doesn't work
09:11<somiaj>how old of a computer? How much ram? What processor?
09:12<x86_64>14 year old pentium 4; 364MB ram
09:12<Haricophile>364....
09:12<x86_64>anyone can suggest a debian version that would surely be compatible with a computer this old?
09:12<x86_64>Haricophile, three hundred sixty-four :)
09:12<Haricophile>Slitaz, puppy linux ...
09:12<x86_64>no
09:13<x86_64>no puppy...... too fluffy for me
09:13<Gabriel_7>x86_64, "8.2 doesn't work". So what's the problem ?
09:13<x86_64>Gabriel_7, the problem is 8.2 is not compatible.
09:13<Haricophile>debian squeeze ?
09:13<x86_64>6
09:13<x86_64>ohh

09:15<x86_64>Haricophile, what's with 364?
09:15<petn-randall>x86_64: I thought it was a Pentium 3?
09:15<Haricophile>I think memory is important on old computers
09:15<petn-randall>x86_64: Do you mean 384? 256 + 128 MB RAM?
09:15<Gabriel_7>The doc (https://www.debian.org/releases/stable/i386/ch02s01.html.en) says: "Nearly all x86-based (IA-32) processors still in use in personal computers are supported, including all varieties of Intel's "Pentium" series"
09:16<x86_64>petn-randall, p3 was a guess. i took a look inside later and found it was a p4
09:16<Gabriel_7>So if it's not compatible with a pentium 3, I guess that's a bug.

13:55<somiaj>my memory veiwers (xosview) do that, and I think conky does as well. But this is configurable. Top by default shows you both.
