03:51<Manlord>I have created a 32 bit chroot (in a 64 bit Jessie) to be able to run a 32 bit Iceweasel. Configured it trough schroot 'desktop' profile using all mount options in the template. It works, but I get a lot of errors regarding permissions in /run/user/1000 directory, which makes impossible to run icedtea. Was unable to find a solution.

06:16<SynrG>ar_ar: in gnome2 panels were interchangeable and could be moved. in gnome3's design, each panel has a different purpose and they are not interchangeable.
06:17<twb>SynrG: not even with some hidden dconf option?
06:17<SynrG>ar_ar: either live with that design decision, use a third-party extension (and live with the possibility it might break in future releases)
06:17<SynrG>or switch desktops entirely
06:17<testrabbit>nonono
06:17<testrabbit>dont listen to that
06:18<twb>testrabbit: you want a simple best-practice firewall?
06:18<testrabbit>there are plenty of ui programs that modify cross desktops

08:32<twb>Ah, you were doing that while already root?
08:32<LobsterAttack>Guess so.
08:32<LobsterAttack>So what's the functional difference betwen su and sudo
08:32<twb>That's probably a minor bug we can ignore
08:32<LobsterAttack>Out of curiousity
08:32<twb>LobsterAttack: su is very simple - it requires the password of the user you chang eto
08:32<twb>sudo is smarter, it can ask for YOUR password instead, and it can remember the password for a while, and it can allow only certain commands
08:33<twb>Which also means that there is more than can go wrong :-)

08:33<twb>Become root again using su, then try "cat /etc/sudoers". It should say something like "%sudo ALL=(ALL:ALL) ALL".
08:34<twb>That means everyone in the group "sudo" can use sudo to do anything as anyone.
08:34<twb>So then you can just add your user to the sudo group, with a command like "adduser LobsterAttack sudo".

08:35<twb>After that, log out & back in (to apply the group change), and you should be able to do things like "sudo whoami" and get "root" as the answer

10:50<finster>hello there. I have a shot question regarding ssh to a debian 8.2 box (fully patched). when shutting down the system via halt or shutdown the ssh session to that system is not being terminated properly. that is it hangs until I kill it with the ssh escape sequence. is there a way to troubleshoot on the system why this is happenning? /var/log/{syslog,messages} does not hint where the cause may be.

10:56<twb>The systemd support for ordering shutdown is, at best, confusing.
10:56<twb>see bootup(7)
10:56<finster>just another annoyance systemd introduces
10:56<twb>IIRC it actually says something like "ordering shutdown is hard, so we don't even try"
10:57<finster>okay, installing libpam-systemd apparently "fixes" the symptmos
10:57<finster>*symptoms, even
10:57-!-Haricophile [~Haricophi@78.228.115.228] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
10:57<twb>That... doesn't make much sense to me
10:58<twb>Unless you are using pam in sshd and that indirectly causes logind to behave differently
10:58-!-danlaw [~danlaw_@91.105.29.44] has left #debian []
10:59<twb>I've had trouble reproducing it reliably in the last two months, but I'm not especially looking for it anymore. I deleted or rewrote so many systemd units that I've no idea what I did to change it. I've definitely had it happen while libpam_systemd.so was being used by sshd sessions.
11:00<twb>It might be that socket-activated openssh is less breaky
11:00<finster>twb: well, my judgement is based on three systems currently. I'll have to see if it holds for the remaining ones
11:00<twb>--> systemctl mask ssh && systemctl enable ssh.socket

11:11<Jester01>The particular problem is they merged old compatibility stuff from separate packages into a common one. This one only seems to "Replaces" the old ones, but not "Provides". I don't understand that, but first figured I could just add the "Provides" to make things work before investigating further.

21:26<sney>in the installer, you can press 'alt-f4' to see the error console, it may give you a more specific idea of what's going wrong
21:26<somiaj>aickem: did you use unetbootin to create your usb image?
21:26<aickem>yes
21:26<somiaj>that is your problem, what os are you making the image from?
21:26<aickem>no wait i used multiboot for this install actually
21:27<aickem>I made it from debian on another pc
21:27<somiaj>that can also cause issues, I'm unsure what would be needed to be done with multiboot to get it to boot a debian image.
21:27<somiaj>you should just cp the image to the usb drive, though this does destroy data. But this is the one sure way to get the image to work
21:28<sney>it's probably still converting the iso under the assumption that it's a cd-only image
21:28<somiaj>if you really need to use multiboot you may have to look up if it is possible or any tweaks to get the debian images to boot.

21:53<abrotman>!win32diskimager
21:53<dpkg>win32diskimager is much more reliable than <unetbootin> for copying ISO images to USB sticks and you can download it from http://sf.net/projects/win32diskimager/ . Adjust the file mask from *.img to *.* if it doesn't show our .iso images. See <usb install> and <install debian> for further details.
