00:51<k-man>jaccob, what is your end goal?
00:51<k-man>and what doesn't work about that?
00:51<jaccob>k-man, let apache serve files and my user edit those files
00:52<k-man>jaccob, what user does apache run as? www-data?
00:52<jaccob>find: missing argument to `-exec'
00:52<jaccob>k-man, yep
00:52<k-man>did you chown the files to www-data?
00:52<jm_>replace {} with \{\}
00:53<jaccob>jm_, thx
00:53<jaccob>k-man, yep
00:53<jm_>but most likely it won't help if files are not chowned by user
00:53<k-man>i've always found it troublesome keeping files correctly permissioned for this purpose. i resorted to ACLs to do it
00:54<jaccob>tbh, I have been using debian for ten years and never learned or used file permissions, then I started playing with them to try and make things more secure and things are all breaking. I did a chmod -R 770 / by mistake instead of ./* and I had to re-install debian

01:01<k-man>jaccob, the echo trick is a very good way of testing a command will do what you think it will do before really executing it imho

01:20<jm_>prename in debian or mmv
01:20<twb>Way easier than a loop
01:20<twb>jm_: hm, it's still just "rename" in wheezy
01:21<twb>WRT chmod you might prefer to use the X option, which preserves x iff it's already set.
01:21<twb>e.g. chmod -R go+rX /foo
01:21-!-stephen0001 [~stephen@46.21.62.128] has joined #debian
01:21<jm_>indeed, and both have -n to show what will happen
01:21<twb>This is significantly faster than even -exec {} +, because there is no need to serialize paths between find & chmod

01:22<jm_>rename is util-linux one
01:22<twb>jm_: ah, update-alternatives perhaps? Yes.
01:22<jm_>twb: yes, you're right, it's handled via alternatives, I always thought it was a hard "rename"
01:23<jaccob>oh hehe, just need to add my apache directory to my apache2.conf file, cause I changed it from /var/www/ to /home/nad/public but forgot to set it the config too

01:45<jm_>yeah doesn't look like it, one would want to use -jauto anyway
01:45<mike__>what is debian exactly?
01:46<twb>jm_: what's -jauto?
01:46<twb>jm_: the context is "if I have to recompile vlc to remove <unwanted feature>, do I need to go buy a new server with more resources?"
01:46<jm_>twb: parallel build, to run make -j# where # is number of CPU-s available (but needs a lot more RAM)

01:47<jm_>twb: yeah in that case you're probably not too bothered with tame taken so it can use less RAM
01:48<twb>It doesn't look like vlc is too bad; compare it with libreoffice

01:48-!-Q-Master^Work [~q-master@217.175.38.170] has joined #debian
01:48<somiaj>if you are planning buidling lots of packages. But a few here or there you should be fine (just might take more time than a server deticated to buidling)
01:49<somiaj>you also don't need to build the packages on the machine you are going to install them on too.
01:50<twb>well e.g. in the past I wanted to compile chromium and I didn't even have enough space to download its source tarball
01:50<twb>apt-get source was like "lol, no" without even trying
01:52<jm_>never done that one, just iceweasel (firefox as it was called back then)
01:52<somiaj>And to build good packages it is nice to use a clean chroot to build in, so it is good to have plenty of space.
01:52<twb>lesse, buildd lists that as requiring... 1.5h and 14GB
01:52<somiaj>The chroot I used to build wine was 2.5G
01:52<twb>my entire disk is "only" 16GB :P

01:54<twb>I rememebr when firefox was just xul and the heavy lifting was done in xulrunner-1.9 package
01:55<somiaj>twb: have access to other machines? You don't have to build the package on the machine you install it on.

22:38<Zhaofeng_Li>Hi, I'm struggling with some strange ACPI bug on my tablet. When Debian boots up, the screen sometimes shuts off. When I press the power button the GDM lock screen appears for a second, then the screen goes off again.
