01:06<jayaura>Hello, in debian if I execute ifconfig as a normal user, it says command not found. i need to execute as root or with sudo. How can I disable this behaviour?
01:06<jayaura>I want all users do be able to see all the executables in the path.
01:07<jayaura>i mean all the executables in the system
01:07<jm_>it's just not in path, alias ifconfig=/sbin/ifconfig
01:08<jm_>or adjust your PATH

01:17<jayaura>i would like to do that for all commands which i might install in future and not worry about it

01:22<jm_>jayaura: yes, changing your path should do the trick
01:23<jaccob>jayaura, you shouldn't! in the least, the su/sudo reminds you to be careful
01:24<jm_>it's a bit pointless since regular user can't do much with those commands anyway, there are only a few that are actually useful
01:24<jayaura>jaccob, :) yeah i know that
01:24-!-mathieu [~mathieu@nie67-1-78-226-109-145.fbx.proxad.net] has joined #debian
01:24<jaccob>ifconfig is the only one, and when I need to do, I just do /sbin/ifconfig, otherwise most of the time, I never use su
01:25<jaccob>I never need ifconfig either
01:25<jaccob>jayaura, what do you use you computer for -that you need to be root all the time?"
01:26<jayaura>jaccob, another peer was complaining because he is used to the way its in ubuntu, without that restriction
01:27-!-anto [~anto@111.92.26.223] has joined #debian
01:27<jaccob>jayaura, oh, you just have to install sudo,
01:27<jaccob>sudo is definitely better, but I hate it, I prefer su
01:27<jayaura>yeah, sudo is there, but for just for knowing the ip address running sudo looked like an overkill
01:28-!-mode/#debian [+l 735] by debhelper
01:28<jaccob>jayaura, ok that is one, what else?
01:28<jaccob>I only ever need sudo for installing software when I get a fresh install but after that I never need it.
01:29<jayaura>jaccob, another one would be the initial frustration for someone new to debian. you install a package which puts something into sbin, and then when you run it, its simply not there!
01:30<jaccob>jayaura, for example?
01:30<jayaura>jaccob, well classifying that to 'learning curve' would be the answer in debian world :D
01:31<jaccob>jayaura, I find it annoying sometimes and install a package and then I do not know the name of the program to start it
01:32<jaccob>jayaura, there are few places that a program might get install -there is /sbin, /bin, /usr/bin, they have different purposes or use the various directories for various reasons, if you find a book it will explain the differences, I skimmed it before but can't remember
01:32<jayaura>jaccob, fdisk was one example.
01:32<jaccob>jayaura, yeah, you better be careful with that one!
01:32<jayaura>jaccob, indeed! :)
01:33-!-fralle [~fralle@83.241.162.219] has joined #debian
01:34<jaccob>jayaura, did you try grep, or vim?
01:34<jm_>fdisk is not so useful because you need permission for device files which regular user does not have
01:34<jaccob>jayaura, bash is awesome, even MAC quit their own shell and use bash now
01:35<jayaura>jaccob, :-? those dont need any super permissions right
01:35<jayaura>jaccob, I am little confused what is the context of that question
01:36<jayaura>jm_, what is your favorite tool for patitioning ?
01:36<jaccob>gpart is good
01:36<jaccob>cfdisk is nicer fdisk
01:38<jayaura>jaccob, never cared to use those since fdisk always did thee job for me. Will try them out next time!
01:38<jm_>jayaura: fdisk or gpart
01:39<jayaura>jm_, okay :)
01:39<jm_>wait not gpart, gdisk

01:58<twb>OK, riddle me this: http://sprunge.us/OYLc why does that dpkg.cfg allow doc/gnucash-docs/ to be installed OK, when I have to explicitly add the intermediary dirs for .../doc/dia/html/ ?
01:58<twb>(At least, I think that's the case; I'm re-testing now.)
02:00<jm_>twb: hmm you also have 2 include rules for gnucash-docs
02:00<twb>that's what I thought but it seems to have worked without- wait, where
02:00<twb>I don't ever do path-include=/usr/share/doc/gnucash-docs only the stuff inside it
02:01<twb>Which AIUI ought to make dpkg fail with "herp derp, couldn't cd to .../gnucash-docs/ to create .../gnucash-docs/gnucash-help-en/"
02:01<twb>Maybe it works anyway because gnucash-docs includes some symlinks, whereas dia doesn't?
02:01<twb>path-excludes ignores symlinks, so any parent dirs of symlinks are implicitly created.
02:03<jm_>I thought it works that way because gnucash-docs includes /usr/share/doc/gnucash-docs/gnucash-guide-en/* and you allow that, or am I not getting something right?
02:03<twb>This is what my notes from August say:
02:03<twb># NB: if you exc=x & inc=x/y/z; you must explicitly inc=x/y/.
02:04<twb>What confuses me is it seems to work without me following that rule, for g-docs
02:04<jm_>but not for say dia?
02:05<twb>right
02:05<twb>And I think that's because dia doesn't create symlinks in /usr/share/doc/dia/WAFFLES -> /usr/share/dia/doc/WAFFLES
02:05<twb>But gnucash-docs *does*
02:06<jm_>could be
02:06<twb>I started a test build but I gotta go :/
02:06<twb>dpkg: error processing archive /var/cache/apt/archives/dia-common_0.97.3-1_all.deb (--unpack):

04:23<c01d>Hello everybody! I am on stable atm. When I was on wheezy (oldstable) I switched to jessie when it was testing, around six months before jessie (testing during that time) became stable. I had absolutely no problems running testing then. What do you think - is it safe to go on testing _today_? Or is the state of the packages in testing yet "too unstable"? I use a productive desktop system.

04:44<c01d>s_20, thank you. Hm, yeah, I know that. If you had a desktop system that you need to use the whole day at work (for doing work your boss longs for very urgently, most of the time) .... would you go to testing atm in the hope some software is more recent (for example the bluetooth stack)? Would it be too risky in your opinion?

04:46<s_20>c01d: well, to be honest i've been using kubuntu at work for years now
04:47<s_20>but it feels to me, even though the system is supposed to be stable, that the quality has been deteriorating to the point i feel more confident in the sid desktops i run at home

04:48<c01d>s_20, okay, thank you. I wouldn't go with ubuntu (personal opinion :-) ). Maybe I will try within the next days when things run low here.
04:49<s_20>c01d: the ubuntu upgrades are a joke, sadly :(
04:49<s_20>people seem to think a full re-install is perfectly normal
04:50<s_20>i've been steadily upgrading a machine on debian for 8 years now (also sid/unstable) and it seems to be in better shape than the kubuntu set up at work which is not even a year old

04:53<s_20>c01d: so what i'm trying to say, you can get a lot of mileage out of testing/unstable, if you're being careful
04:53<c01d>s_20, that is the same as I experienced when I tried ubuntu, years ago. at work (I am at university lab) we give "linux install parties" and we disadvise ubuntu for different reasons, for example so much gets hidden from the users (for example this sudo stuff and no real root account). my colleagues advice for arch, but that is to heavy, in my humble opinion
04:53<s_20>like having a home machine on testing/unstable that you keep updating before so you walk into any obvious/big problems

10:30<kostas>thank you, I didn't thought of that!!! I will... but, do you think that garbage collection is enough to prevent degration?
10:30<SynrGy>could be it's still an option, just disabled by default
10:30<SynrGy>but only enable at some risk
10:30*SynrGy shrugs
10:30<kostas>ah, then I have to recompile the kernel?
10:30<SynrGy>like i said, i live without it
10:30<SynrGy>i have no idea, really
10:30<kostas>with the option enabled?
10:30<SynrGy>that's your job. research it
10:30<SynrGy>i'm just speculating
10:31<kostas>great, thank you!!!

11:39<r4f_deb>Hi all !
11:40<r4f_deb>It is quite difficult for me to believe such a Powerfull, High Performance and High Stability, a Real UNIX-like OS like Debian GNU/Linux is available absolutely Free !
11:42<r4f_deb>It is Simply the Best UNIX like OS ! And I've tested all BSD systems, and several Linux Distros to get this conclusion (Slackware, Gentoo, OpenSUSE, ArchLinux, CentOS, Scientific Linux and Springdale Linux)
11:43<r4f_deb>Debian is Technically Superior than any UNIX like OS ! The First One, the Best !
11:44<r4f_deb>If I install my Debian Jessie 8.2 here on a potato, He is going to run !

14:01<somiaj>so your display manager works, but you cna't actually log into gnome?
14:02<somiaj>on jessie you may have to hit ctrl-alt-f2 (the display manager may be on f1)
14:02<beagleburt>somiaj, NOT with the card IN - but logs-in ok without?
14:03<somiaj>beagleburt: < beagleburt> oh sorry -it shows login screen & when I log in .. it hangs. That to me sounds like the issue is with your desktop.
14:03<somiaj>since you blacklisted nouveau you are probabaly using some generic vga/fb driver that won't support gnome3.

14:04<beagleburt>somiaj, is there a fallback option instead of Gnome3?
14:04<somiaj>but as at0m suggested, if you get to a login screen, ctrl-alt-f2, to a console, and login there. And there you can deal with getting the graphics drivers installed. Note there is no supported way in jessie at the moment. I would suggest trying to backport the package from experimential, but due to gcc5 this may not work.
14:04<somiaj>beagleburt: not for gnome3, no more fall back. You can use another desktp/wm. Or just drop into a console to sort out which drivers you want to install for that card.

15:33<Celelibi>BTW, it's a bug report I created and I think it has been closed too fast (almost immediately) either for personal beliefs reasons or because the guy is misinformed.
