09:49<musca>!ntpdate
09:49<dpkg>ntpdate is an obsolete and unmaintained program to set a system clock via <NTP>. Just install the ntp package instead. Since Debian 5.0 "Lenny", ntp's default configuration files (NTPD_OPTS='-g' in /etc/default/ntp, 'iburst' option for default servers in /etc/ntp.conf) make ntpdate unnecessary. See also <why not ntpdate>.

12:59<chinglung>hello...i just installed debian for the first time...i get some iwlwifi error messages...i think because they are "nonfree". so how do i fix this issue? just installing the .deb packages?
13:00<Maulkin>!iwlwifi
13:00<dpkg>The iwlwifi Linux kernel driver supports several Intel 802.11n (WiFi Link, Wireless-N, Advanced-N, Ultimate-N) and 802.11ac adapters. Firmware is required, ask me about <non-free sources> and install the firmware-iwlwifi package to provide. Supported devices are listed at https://wiki.debian.org/iwlwifi . See also <iwlegacy>, <iwl7000>.

13:23<benedict>Hi all. Does apt have some limit on the lifetimes of package signing keys? I had a little local repository (~200 packages+versions) that was working just fine until a couple of hours ago, and it's now claiming everything is untrusted. I can see the relevant key in apt-key list, and I'm not getting any transport errors; the only thing I can spot is that the key is 360 days old today

16:37<da2>Hello, I just installed Debian on a netbook, from the live ISO lxde-desktop. Each time the desktop is started after boot, I get two error popups. Firsts one says about : "Impossible to connect to wicd D-Bus interface. See log file...". Then I close it and the second popup appears : "wicd daemon was turned off. Graphical interface won't work correctly while daemon is not started again." But wifi is connected and I have access
16:37<da2>to internet. Just the wicd-client is not working. Then if I run wicd-client it starts a new instance full working.
16:38<da2>What can I do to remove this error popups ?
16:39<somiaj>da2: is wicd really configuring your network, check /etc/network/interfaces (do you have wlan0 your wifi card configured there?)
16:40<da2>I configured nothing except that I entered the wifi WPA key in the wicd-client. I go read the "interfaces" file...

16:41<somiaj>seems like wicd daemon isn't fully running by the time you login to lxde, but if you wait it works.

16:44<da2>wired is eth0 as I see in the wicd-client configuration, and wifi wlan0
16:45<somiaj>do you have a cored pluged into your wired card?
16:45<da2>I disconnected eth0 wire just after installing the firmware-iwlwifi and having wifi working
16:46<somiaj>I think it is the auto eth0 and corresponding eth0 line (11 and 12) in your interfaces file causing problems. It is trying to assign an ip via dhcp, but if it is not wired in it will have to sit there and wait for the time out.
16:46<somiaj>I would delete those two lines form your interfaces file, and just manage eth0 from wicd, unless you really want to manage it by hand in the interfaces file
16:47<somiaj>but I think this timeout then slows wicd from fully starting, so that is why you have to wait for wicd to load correctly
16:47<da2>I'm installing Debian for my mother, so I have to make it simpliest and able to find the best configuration by itself
16:47<da2>But my mother won't plug eth0, just wifi
16:48<somiaj>da2: another option, replace 'auto eth0' with 'allow-hotplug eth0', that will make it automatically bring up the interface if a cord is put in, but won't stop the network from loading during boot
16:48<somiaj>my suggestion is just delete those two lines form your interfaces file
16:48<da2>ok I try this

21:43<somiaj>samsagaz: but debian is set up so you can put thigns in /usr/local and those things will be left alone by dpkg, as all the packages should put stuff in /usr

21:44<samsagaz>somiaj: thanks will install in $home/bin then
21:44<somiaj>samsagaz: one thign to note is in most PATH, /usr/local is used first and /usr second, so if you install system stuff in /usr/local you can get conflicts of things running due to the PATH, but the files can still live nicely side by side.
