03:34<earthcentre>hi
03:34<earthcentre>in debian
03:35<earthcentre>what is the software manager called ? where I can find and install programs
03:35<chele>earthcentre synaptic, apt-get, aptitude
03:35<Raiz>It's the package manager
03:35<earthcentre>ok, will try, feeling so clausterphobic...
03:36<Raiz>you can do $ sudo apt-get install <whatever>
03:38<towo^work>E: Unable to locate package whatever
03:38-!-cragdor_ [~quassel@host86-129-150-77.range86-129.btcentralplus.com] has joined #debian
03:38<Raiz>LOL
03:38<earthcentre>in mint, there was software manager, is there not something like this in debian
03:39<Raiz>I mint, they have a GUI front-end to the actual debian package manager
03:39<earthcentre>I see
03:39<earthcentre>good for newbies
03:39<earthcentre>at least to start with
03:39<jm_>synaptic is a gui tool
03:39<Raiz>Do you install Debian with a DE?
03:40<Raiz>(Desktop Environment)
03:40<earthcentre>I downloaded 3 dvds
03:40<earthcentre>but used only one
03:40<jm_>gnome has something of its own too
03:40<earthcentre>yes, I have a desktop
03:40<earthcentre>but it is missing a search window
03:40<earthcentre>so I am haing trouble finding things
03:40<Raiz>You'd probably have something called synaptic, It's a GUI front-end for the debian package manger too
03:40<earthcentre>ahh I see
03:41<earthcentre>maybe I should reinstall
03:41<earthcentre>you are right, because during this install I chose all the desktops, and it failed
03:41<Raiz>No no!
03:41<Raiz>Oh

03:41<Raiz>all the desktops?
03:41<Raiz>Damn
03:41<earthcentre>well
03:41<earthcentre>I wanted totry them all :P
03:42<Raiz>you can have a 30 Megabytes network installer which will install everything from the repositories and you don't have to update after the installation
03:42<jm_>how exactly has it failed?
03:42<earthcentre>well, it asked for disc two
03:42<earthcentre>ran that for a while
03:42<earthcentre>then somehow that step failed
03:43<earthcentre>and I got back to where you can choose lxde xfce
03:43<earthcentre>I thought I chose xfce, but not sure
03:43-!-piper [~piper@00012f3a.user.oftc.net] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
03:43<jm_>well you can install additional stuff now if you want it
03:43<earthcentre>yes, I would like to do that
03:43<jm_>start tasksel
03:43<earthcentre>in mint I used the software manager
03:44<earthcentre>got xfce up and running
03:44-!-ioerror [~ioerror@iranicum.torproject.org] has joined #debian
03:44<earthcentre>and actually was happy with the desktop I configured
03:44<earthcentre>but now on this righ i am stuck
03:44<earthcentre>I want to give debian a go
03:44-!-ioerror is now known as Guest233
03:45<earthcentre>I will just reinstall, and select xfce from there
03:45<jm_>there are also alternative methods to install various DE-s, ask dpkg about it -- /msg dpkg install gnome /msg dpkg install kde etc.

03:45<earthcentre>plus now I have the computer connected to the internet, when I installed the wifi wasnt working and i couldnt plug in
03:46<jm_>most wifi requires firmware

03:46<dpkg>Unofficial <netinst> images - containing non-free Debian <firmware> packages - for installing Debian 8 "Jessie" are available from http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/cd-including-firmware/current/ . See also <install guide>.

08:43<somiaj>gonzalo: what piece of software? Basically a deb is created by adding some additional info in a debian/ dir in the source code and using debian packaging tools. This is explained in detail in the debian new matainers guide, which you can find on google easy enough.
08:44<somiaj>gonzalo: but lots of software already has such a debian/ dir, or you can grab the source from debian and then it is just a matter of running the package building tools.
08:45<somiaj>gonzalo: debian helper (dh_foo) also provides tools to help automate making the debian/ dir so you can package the binary made from source code

12:56<SynrGy>!contrib
12:56<dpkg>[contrib] Debian packages that contain <DFSG>-compliant software, but have dependencies not in main (possibly packaged for Debian in non-free). To get contrib packages, add lines like "deb http://httpredir.debian.org/debian/ [jessie|stretch|sid] main contrib" to your /etc/apt/sources.list, then «aptitude update». Also ask me about <non-free>, <contrib list>.
12:57<somiaj>lindi-: contrib is an offical debian repo. But yes debian likes to say contrib/non-free are not part of debian (or debian main), but others see it as an offical debian repo (hence why the free software foundation won't recomended debian as free

13:13<niftydigits>somiaj, hmm - ok frustrating the script I'm using just detects deps it needs to install and tries to download and install all at once. Is there no way apt can automatically attempt another transfer if one of them is corrupt. It's currently done through docker so if it errors, the machine state isn't saved.

13:22<somiaj>r4f_deb: I'm unsure, again if the software is not provided in the debian repos there are ways to install it on your system in a nice way (sometimes called the debian way). You have to judge these on a case by case bases. Since I don't use amule or tor I'm unsure on either.
13:22<somiaj>niftydigits: I'm unsure on docker, but I think there are better ways to clone a system as opposed to running a script.

17:22<thalos>I'm trying to make a custom kernel (linus tree), everything does well (make localmodconfig; make oldconfig ; make deb-pkg ; dpkg -i ../linux-*.deb). But at boot time my hdd is not found (/dev/disks is not available in initramfs) so I tried changing root=/dev/sda1 to bypass UUID but /dev/sda1 is not found in the initramfs. I unpacked the generated initramfs and compared it against the debian official one but I can not find out what the difference is
17:22<thalos>between them. Anyone has any insight?

17:42<r4f_deb>I don't know if this question make sense...
17:42<PovAddict>you want to make your own pdf?
17:42<PovAddict>from what?
17:43<somiaj>r4f_deb: there are lots of ways to make pdf documents. If you use libreoffice there is an 'export to pdf' option. Many markup langauges have tools to export htem to pdf. I personaly use latex (well tetex-live in debian)

17:59<PovAddict>somiaj: yeah I had problems with another package due to that...

18:00<PovAddict>so I had a package that I couldn't upgrade because it wanted to pull in a new libstdc++, and doing that would have upgraded half my system to sid :P
18:01<somiaj>yea if you are reall careful or you like a wild ride, you can get away with stuff like that.
18:01<somiaj>but of course standard advise is don't (as that is far easier than listing the million and half things you have to be careful about)
18:02<PovAddict>I should move to testing again...
18:02<PovAddict>I just need to do it when I can afford the time to fix what breaks :P
18:02<somiaj>I use sid on my desktop, but my work laptop uses jessie and there really isn't anything in testing/sid I need
18:02<somiaj>my suggestion is still wait for this gcc5 transition to complete, but it is now to the long and slow process of all the packages that need to be updated
18:03<PovAddict>I'm a KDE developer (sort of) and being still on KDE4 brings me bad looks :P
18:04<somiaj>I'm still using my wm config from 10 years ago. I can tell you this, not running a DE makes life in sid so much nicer. (:
18:04<somiaj>though I think testing has it the worst when it comes to DE's
18:04<somiaj>(because so many packages have to filter from sid with the DE)
