08:40<aef>so i really have problems getting a grip on DHCPv6 in Debian Jessie. on bootup I don't get an address, I need to call dhclient after boot to receive one, or put in a sleep as pre-up into the IPv6 interface entry. Even that sometimes fails. when i manually call dhclient, the dhclient stays alive in background, so in the end i have 3 dhclients running in background. is there some kind of way to IPC the running dhclient and get it to try to receive a new

But for now I wanted to test a bit with the cli version, which somehow doesn't have it either (I don't have apache set up to test the apache mod SAPI)

12:46<Giirt>Okey, yes, I guess I haven't figured out how licensing works fully.
12:46<bremner>there are some people who are against copyright as a concept, but free software relies on it for enforcement.

12:49<bremner>if you don't copyright, you lose all control over how it is used. so it can be used in proprietary software. Some people think that's bad.
12:49<bremner>for the pedants, in most jurisdictions, not copyrighting is essentially imposible.
12:50<Giirt>bremner, Okey, that makes sence. But you also prevent open projects to use the documentation. Wouldn't this be solved by licensing the documentation as GPLv3 instead of copyrighting the work?
12:50<guildenstern>the only reason you can even license anything is through copyright
12:50<bremner>again, GPLv3 _is_ copyrighted
12:51<guildenstern>it is literally the right to determine how and when people copy your work

22:27<JuicyParsons>I have some GIS/graphics/programming packages that I need to be much more recent versions than those in Debian Stable. But every time I've tried doing this in the past, I end up with a broken base system and needing to reinstall ... Is there a way to keep a base system that tracks stable, while having all "unstable/testing" libs/packages built in their own directory somewhere (so that I can install, say, the debian stable version of Python/GDAL
22:27<JuicyParsons>but then track a more recent version simultaneously and not overwrite the original)
22:28<JuicyParsons>How could I install software in this manner (akin to Python's virtualenv - where I have a self-contained environment that this newer software can run in)?
22:29-!-Netsplit charon.oftc.net <-> liquid.oftc.net quits: MackBoy
22:30<JuicyParsons>I just want something so that when something inevitably breaks, my core system is still functional so I can just wipe out the directories with the developmental libs instead of reinstalling from scratch.

22:31<voltagex>if a fat32 thumbdrive is plugged into a system that's *not* a debian installer, the netinst installer fails to work properly - I'm just wondering how best to report this
22:36<somiaj>JuicyParsons: do you need to run this software in a gui?
22:36<JuicyParsons>somiaj, Yes - some of the software such as QGIS and Inkscape is GUI software.
22:36<somiaj>JuicyParsons: are you able to compile the software or get a static linked version of the binary? (i.e. what install formate dose the software come in)
22:37<JuicyParsons>all of them have .deb packages available, or are Python modules installable through pip
22:37<somiaj>voltagex: what do you mean? I can't really parse what the bug is.
22:37<somiaj>JuicyParsons: well get the source code, compile it and either make your own .deb from the source, or install it in /usr/local
22:40<JuicyParsons>somiaj, How do I make it where the software that I install in /usr/local knows to use the libraries there? For instance, if I have a specific version of GDAL or ipython that I want QGIS to use, and install these in /usr/local, how do I make QGIS use them instead of the system-wide default GDAL/ipython?

22:44<somiaj>It really depends on what core libaries on your system the software depends on
22:44<somiaj>but in many cases you can compile software against the libaries in debian, you can also run software in a vm

22:47<JuicyParsons>Yes, I am using an "testing/unstable" VM on my desktop at home (which has a lot more RAM/CPU), and that works fine. But in this case, I am trying to install on an older laptop with slower CPU that doesn't have VT support

22:52<somiaj>voltagex: Just double checking, how did you create the bootable thumbdrive?
22:52<somiaj>voltagex: I assume this is a stable installer or the testing installer?
22:52<voltagex>somaij I'm using IPXE sanboot to boot this ISO, DI stretch RC4
22:53<somiaj>does this bug only effect the stretch installer?
22:53<somiaj>!testing installer
22:53<dpkg>Repeat after me: the testing installer is for testing the <installer>, not for installing <testing>. To install testing, do a minimal installation using the <stable> installer and ask me about <stable->testing>. Installer bugs should be filed against the debian-installer pseudopackage. https://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/
22:54<somiaj>there is the package to file bug's against.
22:54<voltagex>I am testing the installer.
22:55<voltagex>let me go back and try the stable installer
22:55<somiaj>yea, that was more to give you the package to report bugs against
22:55<voltagex>oh.
22:55<voltagex>sorry.
22:56<somiaj>Also you should probabaly be asking in #debian-next, but anyways, there is the package to file the bug against.
