00:41<peter1858>having trouble getting source packages. In Synaptic, when I change the repositories to a repository set up for deb-src all I get is a whole lot of insalled packages (not source) and no packages which aren't installed

00:46<twb>peter1858: please clarify; what step isn't working?
00:47<twb>peter1858: I don't know if synaptic even supports sources; does e.g. "apt-get source mg" work?

01:00<peter1858>twb, before that, I went into Synaptic, changed repositories back to deb repositories (deb-src repository was selected so that seems to have been a problem). Then "apt-get source mg" -> "E: You must put some 'source' URIs in your sources.list"

22:32<twb>erm, note that debian 8 ships with 3.16 kernel
22:32<PovAddict>twb: hm well, you're just installing a gir data file

22:33<twb>PovAddict: probably all it is, is in wheezy I installed some other program that pulled in python-gi as a side effect
22:33<PovAddict>twb: it can be used by any GLib Introspection binding, Python is just one of them, so it makes sense that git1.2-foo doesn't depend on python-gi

22:41<matth>I have a question in regards to Linux Mint. This is the first Linux distro I've ever installed (I want to dual-boot Windows 10 and Linux Mint). I've tried to follow online instructions for creating partitions. I got some error about a bootloader, and this computer will ONLY boot to windows.
22:42<matth>I hope this is the right chat, since Mint is a Debian distro
22:42<dpkg>Linux Mint is not Debian and is not supported in #debian. Please use their forums at or join #linuxmint-help on for support. Linux Mint is variously based on <Ubuntu> with a "Linux Mint Debian Edition" (LMDE) also available. See also <based on debian>, <mintppc>.
22:42<matth>Oh yes sorry
22:43<PovAddict>mint is based on debian, but that doesn't mean we know about its peculiarities :)

23:48<allen>any easy way to enable auto logon in Jessie 8.2?
23:48<somiaj>allen: what display manager / desktop are you using?
23:48<allen>using mate

23:49<allen>have no idea

23:50<allen>have downloaded gnome system tools
23:50<somiaj>allen: can you check if you have gdm3 or lightdm installed? you might be able to see this in the 'systemctl status' info, look for which display manager is running
