06:40<Mabool_42>Hi everyone, I've just installed Jessie and I'm looking for a package to make bootable USB isolinux. I used unetbootin on Wheezy but it seems it doesn't exist yet for Jessie... Any clues ?

06:49<lzz>Mabool_42: you probably get comments that unetbootin is huge load crap...someone has said it breaks debian somehow... use iso's directly from debian site ...they can "dd"ed directly to usb( be careful abou "dd" command)
06:51<lzz>btw i have personal experience misusing dd do not "dd" your hard disks ..dd your usb sticks

21:02<TheAmorphous>I'm having trouble booting into a fairly new install of Debian. I keep getting dropped to a shell with "gave up waiting for root device" error. The SSD I'm trying to boot to doesn't show up in /dev when this happens, but does on occasion when Debian actually does boot properly. Any help?
21:02<somiaj>TheAmorphous: does the bois see the drive every time? Could it be a faulty sata cable hooking up the ssd?
21:03<somiaj>to me it sounds more like hardware
21:03<TheAmorphous>UEFI always sees this SSD, yes. It worked fine with an Ubuntu install for the past year as well.
21:03<somiaj>well you'll have to maybe change the boot from 'quiet' and start seeing if you can identify why it isn't being correctly detected during boot

21:04<TheAmorphous>I've tried adding a rootdelay of 90 to grub, but it just waits 90 seconds before mounting an array of five HDDs (this works every time) then fails waiting for the SSD
21:04<somiaj>it isn't an issue with the root= or fstab confgiarution?
21:04<TheAmorphous>fstab shows the correct UUID
21:04<TheAmorphous>50% of the time Debian boots just fine
21:05<TheAmorphous>somiaj: So I just remove quiet from /etc/default/grub and it'll give me the error that's causing this?
21:05<somiaj>so it is finding boot and the initrd but not the root? But best I can guess is check the logs see if you can configure it out
21:05<TheAmorphous>Yeah, it goes to initram and says Loading, please wait
21:05<somiaj>TheAmorphous: it may not give you the actual error, but after you remove quiet, run 'update-grub' and at least you'll see more what is going on during the boot. Unsure if this will help track it down or not.
21:06<somiaj>but it is better than lack of lgos

21:22<somiaj>well you could try a 4.2 kernel from backports

22:23<danielsh>(good idea)
22:24<danielsh>weren't you going to try a different distro / OS earlier ?
22:24<TheAmorphous>No. Here's the long and short of it:
22:24<TheAmorphous>This Kingston SSD has been running Ubuntu on another box for the past year.
22:25<TheAmorphous>The other day I imaged this Kingston's Ubuntu installation and put it on an older SSD. That machine is running fine with the older SSD still.
22:25<TheAmorphous>I then installed Debian onto the Kingston and everything worked fine the first few hours.
22:25<TheAmorphous>I was able to set up a large five HDD array and install all of my software on the Kingston's Debian installation
22:26<TheAmorphous>Then it started this gave up waiting for root device nonsense that I came here for help with
22:26<danielsh>So the SDD has worked for the last year, but both the OS install and the motherboard are new?
22:26<danielsh>Is the install media good?
22:26<TheAmorphous>Brand new motherboard and CPU in this box. Brand new Debian install.
22:26<danielsh>(It might have a self-check option in the boot menu?)
22:26<TheAmorphous>Well I mean, when it booted successfully it worked fine for 12+ hours.
22:27<TheAmorphous>I'd just have to reboot a couple times before it would work properly.
22:27<TheAmorphous>So I removed the raid HDDs, and just had the Kingston with Debian plugged in. That's when it booted fine three times in a row.
22:28<TheAmorphous>Then it just... stopped. Can't boot from it at all now. Can't even get into UEFI with it plugged in.

22:28<danielsh>Sounds like the older disk simply isn't recognised
22:29<TheAmorphous>I'm really hoping that's not the case

22:30<TheAmorphous>That would really suck because I spent a lot of time installing and configuring all my stuff. I'm a Linux novice, so that was no small task.
22:30<TheAmorphous>In my experience SSDs work fine until they don't.

22:40<somiaj>TheAmorphous: but since it is a learning project, doing it twice will help learn it better
22:41<TheAmorphous>Yeah, I'll just have to figure out how to mount this array in mdadm. I've never mounted an existing array, always created a new one.
22:42<TheAmorphous>So more learning, yay
22:43<somiaj>yea raids are out of my experience
22:43<TheAmorphous>It just booted successfully four times in a row from the old Intel SSD :(
22:44<TheAmorphous>Okay this is odd. I used the same install ISO this time but the partitions on this drive are different from the installation on the Kingston.
22:44<TheAmorphous>The Kingston had a ~500MB FAT32 partition. This one doesn't.
22:46<somiaj>you mean the efi partition? Did you boot the installer in efi mode or legacy mode?
22:46<somiaj>Are you using an actual debian isntaller or a debian live image?
22:46<TheAmorphous>I... don't know
22:47<TheAmorphous>I think it was a live image, but I never actually booted into Debian from the USB stick
22:47<somiaj>TheAmorphous: the live images only use legacy mbr boot and so the installer won't create a 500mb fat32 efi partition (which is needed for efi boot)
22:48<somiaj>TheAmorphous: if you want to use efi boot you will need to use an offical debian isntaller (and not a live image -- though you can boot a live image right up into the isntaller, it is just via legacy boot)
22:48<TheAmorphous>I'll have to do some reading up on that. I don't understand the difference.

22:50<somiaj>TheAmorphous: but once booted there is little difference. Just realize that mbr partitions can't exceeded 2TB and you have to deal with the 4 primarly and then extneded partition table stuff
