00:56<somiaj>johnfg: so you lost your /boot partition and need to recover it?
00:57<johnfg>Is there a way for me to install the kernel, whatever I'd need: vmlinuz, initrd and the rest?
00:57<johnfg>somiaj: Yes, simply.

00:58-!-acald3ron [~acald3ron@177.239.97.5] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:58<johnfg>somiaj: Or to reinstall the kernel: 3.2.0-4-486
00:59<johnfg>I was attempting to move a partition, to be able to make another partition bigger. gparted live froze in the process.
00:59-!-bob_ [~bob@138.117.12.80] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:59<somiaj>johnfg: you will have to reinstall at least the kernel and grub
00:59<somiaj>!tell johnfg about confmiss
00:59<somiaj>johnfg: you may have to use that to get it to regerneate the config files
00:59-!-berserk_ren [~berserk_r@84.240.12.132] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:59<somiaj>johnfg: seems base-files owns some files in /boot too
00:59<johnfg>somiaj: Grub actually is reinstalled and running okay, but the files in /boot aren't right.
01:00<jm_>update-grub and grub-install shall take care of it
01:00<jm_>but you'll want the kernel first
01:00-!-Frostshifter [~Ian2128@4MJAAAMEQ.tor-irc.dnsbl.oftc.net] has quit []
01:00<johnfg>somiaj: That won't reinstall initrd vmlinuz System.map and config, will it?
01:01<somiaj>johnfg: I'm unsure which of the files in /boot from grub are generated by the update-grub script or provided by the pacakge grub. I think they are all generated so you should be fine.
01:01<somiaj>johnfg: reinstall the kernel, that will reinstall the packages
01:01<johnfg>somiaj: what pkg name would i use for that kernel?
01:02<johnfg>apt-get install kernel-3.2.0-4-486?
01:02<somiaj>johnfg: dpkg -l | grep linux-image
01:02<somiaj>you want the actual kernel package (not the meta package)
01:03<johnfg>somiaj: Ok, as this is a rescue cd, do i mount the boot partition to get it installed to the correct place or how would i do it?
01:03<jm_>!fixmbr
01:03<dpkg>To reinstall <GRUB> boot to your Debian install disk/live CD, switch to the other console (Alt-F2), mount your root filesystem (mount -t ext2 /dev/whatever /target ; mount --bind /dev /target/dev ; mount -t proc none /target/proc ; mount -t sysfs none /target/sys), chroot into it (chroot /target), run "mount /boot/efi" on EFI and "update-grub && grub-install /dev/whatever". See also <rescue mode>, <dual boot guide>, <supergrub>.
01:03<jm_>like that
01:04-!-Vollstrecker [~vollstrec@p2003007A2A1FDC000A606EFFFE4490F9.dip0.t-ipconnect.de] has joined #debian
01:04<somiaj>johnfg: mount everything as in the factoid and chroot to the install
01:05<johnfg>thanks guys, i'll work on that now and be back in a few.
01:09<johnfg>target doesn't exist
01:09<johnfg>do i need to create it?
01:10<somiaj>johnfg: sure, or use /mnt or any other location you want
01:10<somiaj>johnfg: /target doens't really matter
01:10<johnfg>gotcha
01:10-!-Yst [~Yst@0001fe93.user.oftc.net] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
01:14<johnfg>And with gpt, do i do that last step mount /boot/gpt?
01:15<somiaj>no
01:15<somiaj>gpt is a partition type, most likely if you are using gpt you are booting in efi
01:15<johnfg>i'm chrooted into /mnt/temp.
01:15<somiaj>johnfg: dose your machine use efi boot or legacy boot (this is what matters)
01:16<johnfg>somiaj: legacy, i'm pretty sure.
01:16<johnfg>is there a way to test?
01:16<somiaj>johnfg: then you don't need to mount the efi partition.
01:16-!-palasso [~quassel@palassopoulosge.ath.forthnet.gr] has joined #debian
01:16<somiaj>johnfg: have you chrooted into your isntall? dpkg -l | grub (do you have grub-pc or grub-efi installed)?
01:17<johnfg>yes I have chrooted.
01:17<johnfg>I'll do that cmd.
01:18-!-Yst [~Yst@0001fe93.user.oftc.net] has joined #debian

01:18<johnfg>dpkg-query: error: failed to open package info file `/var/lib/dpkg/status' for reading: No such file or directory
01:18<johnfg>Is that because /var isn't mounted?
01:19<somiaj>correct, mount your full system inside the chroot
01:20<johnfg>somiaj: All my existing partitions? including the /boot?
01:21<johnfg>And you actually meant here: 06:16 < somiaj> johnfg: have you chrooted into your isntall? dpkg -l | grub (do you have grub-pc or grub-efi installed)?
01:21<johnfg>dpkg -l |grep grub, right?
01:21<dpkg>ii |grep grub, right 2.4-3 ultra s3kr1t #debian package
01:21<somiaj>johnfg: you don't have any grub packages installed? Makes it harder to see what you were using (legacy or efi boot)
01:22<johnfg>dpkg -l |grep grub, not dpkg -l | grub.
01:22<dpkg>No packages found matching |grep grub, not dpkg -l | grub.
01:22<somiaj>johnfg: correck, dpkg -l | grep grub
01:22<somiaj>you should packages like grub-common, grub-ef or grub-pc depending on which is installed
01:23<johnfg>yep, they're installed: grub-common, grub-pc, grub-pc-bin, grub2-common.
01:24<johnfg>And do mount all partitions?
01:24-!-iflema [~weechat@120.155.21.74] has joined #debian
01:24<somiaj>johnfg: yea you are using mbr (legacy) boot. If you are using a gtp parition table with this, hopefully it is configured corretly for mbr compdability
01:25<somiaj>johnfg: only those you need for your system, you probabaly don't need home, but you'll want /, /boot, /var, /usr, and then mount --bind /dev, /proc and /sys
01:26<johnfg>somiaj: The latter are done per the factoid.
01:26<johnfg>but i'll mount /boot
01:26<johnfg>Do I need to mount swap at this point?
01:26<somiaj>johnfg: once you do that in chroot into your system, you can then just reinstall all the packages we said to repopulate /boot, then update-grub, then grub-install
01:27<somiaj>johnfg: not really, you just need the main base system to get it bootable again
01:27-!-trapier [~trapier@cpe-107-15-137-21.nc.res.rr.com] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
01:28<johnfg>somiaj: so, i'm not going to bother mounting /home, /usr/local or my afs partitions: vicepa and vicepb.
01:28<somiaj>johnfg: I don't think you need those. You just need the tools to install/configure things
01:30<johnfg>somiaj: So I'm going to do now: apt-get install linux-image-3.2.0-4-486; sound like the correct next step?
01:30-!-vics [~vics@178.124.194.174] has joined #debian
01:31<somiaj>johnfg: since the package is isntalled I would do it with --reinstall flag
01:31<somiaj>!confmis
01:31<somiaj>!confmiss
01:31<dpkg>You have to especially tell the packaging system to reinstall config files because when they are gone, it is assumed that you want them to stay deleted. "aptitude -o DPkg::Options::='--force-confmiss' reinstall $packagename" will restore them (man dpkg for details). If the package uses <ucf> for config file management, ask me about <ucf confmiss>.
01:31<somiaj>johnfg: I would actually use aptitude, use that command it gave you tehre, "aptitude -o DPkg::Options::='--force-confmiss' reinstall $packagename"
01:32-!-Nephyrin [~Popz@50.253.127.139] has joined #debian
01:33<johnfg>So I'll do: aptitude -o DPkg:::Options::=''force-confmiss' reinstall linux-image-3.2.0-4-486
01:33<johnfg>does that look right?
01:33<somiaj>johnfg: correct, you should also then do that with the package base-files
01:33<somiaj>johnfg: on my system those are the only two packages that own files in /boot
01:34<somiaj>(though I'd do it with all your grub pacakges too, just because I'm unsure whic of those grub files are generated and whic are installed as config files)
01:34<somiaj>johnfg: i.e. we are regenrating your /boot by reinstianll everything that puts stuff there

01:36<johnfg>That first cmd actually regenerated grub.cfg.
01:36<johnfg>somiaj: what are the package base-files?
01:37<somiaj>johnfg: I just did dpkg -S /boot
01:37<somiaj>johnfg: that lists all pacakges that contain fiels in boot (not config files though, so that is why I think you nee dto reinstall grub)
01:37<somiaj>johnfg: dpkg -L base-files will list all packages in base files
01:38<somiaj>ahh looks like that pakage just owns /boot but doens't put anything in it, so you can skip that one
01:38<johnfg>somiaj: skip what dpkg -L base-files showed?

01:43-!-zykotick9 [~zykotick9@000191a8.user.oftc.net] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
01:43<johnfg>because the cmd; dpkg -L base-files does just that, is there a pkg for base-files?
01:43<somiaj>johnfg: do you use that aptitude command and go though and reinstall all the grub packages?
01:43<somiaj>johnfg: that command just lists the files installed by the package you give it
01:43<somiaj>you can do it for any package you have installed
01:44<johnfg>somiaj: What would reinstall the config System.map and vmlinuz pkgs?
01:45-!-sidmo_ [~sidmo@p5489CA87.dip0.t-ipconnect.de] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
01:45<johnfg>somiaj: do you want me to do that aptitude cmd for all 4 of those grub pkgs?
01:45<somiaj>johnfg: the vmlinuz and System.map fiels are owned by your linux-image package. I'm surprise the reinstall didn't put them back
01:46<johnfg>somiaj: maybe it did, but the date/time for them was different than the initrd.img which was for now (a few minutes ago).
01:46<somiaj>johnfg: that is fine, the initrd.img is generated not installed
01:47<somiaj>so it will have a different timestamp
01:47<jm_>you need grub-install to populate /boot/grub
01:47-!-lepalom [~quassel@soho.upc.es] has joined #debian
01:47<somiaj>I thought that is update-grub
01:47<somiaj>grub-install just puts it on the mbr
01:47<jm_>update-grub is for grub.cfg, grub-install is for /boot/grub/foo/*.mod
01:48<johnfg>jm_: i believe that part is intact. Think I should try a reboot now? I can always come back to you helpful folks.
01:48<johnfg>btw...i do really appreciate the help.
01:48<jm_>johnfg: wait, so not all of /boot was nuked or what?
01:48<somiaj>johnfg: you ran both update-grub and grub-install /dev/whatver
01:49<somiaj>yea I thought all of /boot was nuked and we needed to regerante the files in it
01:49<johnfg>jm_: somiaj: I was able to do a grub-install /dev/sda from rescue mode, but only some of the files were toasted. i was able to use testdisk to copy, but i couldn't get all.
01:50<jm_>johnfg: you want to run grub-install in chroot
01:50<somiaj>ahh so this isn't your first recovery attempt. That is fine, just make sure everythign looks fine and try it.
01:50<johnfg>i'll reboot, and hopefully get back. oh, ok.
01:50<somiaj>johnfg: yea run it to be safe from teh chroot. And now you know how to put yoru system into a chroot and play with it
01:50<somiaj>johnfg: once in the chroot it is almost like you are in your system and can use normal tools to fix things
01:51<johnfg>somiaj: yup. I wish all of this went into my /home/johnfg/irclogs/freenode/#debian.log; but it's not :-(
01:51<johnfg>somiaj: extremely helpful, for sure.

09:33<whostha>this is true, except now grub says it can't load the disc because its a different uidd and puts me into grub rescue
09:33<whostha>and i've got no /boot/grub folder to call config files from in this mode because it wasn't installed onto the ext4 partition

09:35<Brigo>whostha, for getting permanent changes.
09:36<towo^work>even then a /boot/grub in the install should exist

09:36<Brigo>towo^work, you are right, an install-grub will be neeeded.

09:39<Brigo>whostha, you can edit the boot menu if you get it. Do you get the grub boot menu?
09:39<whostha>no grub menu

09:39<Brigo>of course, the grub boot menu is /boot/grub

09:42<whostha>the problem is when you get to the linux command
09:42<whostha>it isn't found, assume its a command from /boot/grub
09:43<whostha>basically when i start up, the disk says "I can't find this disk". i need a way to get to why it knows to look for that disk and tell it to look for a real one, just so i can boot once and install grub
09:43<whostha>it knows to look for that disc from somewhere in mbr
09:43<Brigo>it is explained it that guide: ls
09:43<whostha>yeah as i say the linux command is necessary to assign

09:44<whostha>i don't have grub
09:44<Brigo>whostha, ls is a grub instructio for searching for disks/partitions.

09:48<Brigo>whostha, you have grub istalled in the mbr, as far as you get grub> rescue mode

09:48<Brigo>check this: https://www.howtoforge.com/tutorial/repair-linux-boot-with-grub-rescue/
09:49<whostha>yeah, i do. but i think the linux instruction etc must be pulled from /boot/grub. the problem is that so many of these guides refer to people who do have grub, but just overwrote the MBR. all they need to do is call their /boot/grub from grub rescue
09:49<whostha>i don't have a /boot/grub, so a lot of these guides are v similar but not workable for me
09:49<Brigo>whostha, if you can't get the system booting from there, you only other way is the rescue disk.

17:39<Encrypt>However, I have a problem with gnome-shell and my graphics card
17:39<Encrypt>It frequently uses 200% of CPU
17:40<Encrypt>Apparently, that's because my monitor is unrecognized
17:40<zlatan>Encrypt: how do you know it is because of graphic card (the cpu usage)?

17:41<Encrypt>So, I am running Debian Jessie and my graphics card is: ASUS HD6450-SL-2GD3-L (y'a un AMD Radeon HD 6450)

17:44<zlatan>Encrypt: you should have the open source driver installed by default
17:45<zlatan>did you try installing also nonfree-firmware which is needed for 3D acceleration (and gnome is pretty much on that)
17:45<Encrypt>zlatan, No, I didn't

Instead of supersede, you can also use "prepend" or "append" to add nameservers. Or remove domain-name-servers (etc.) from dhclient.conf if you prefer.
18:52<marty>zlatan: yes you are correct
18:53<marty>will have to install windows and see if the broadcom driver in windows will show it up
18:53<zlatan>marty: you can install it in VM (Virtualbox) and it should show (if it is all okay)
18:54<zlatan>better then installing it alongside Debian ;)
18:54<narcan>themill: thank you :)

19:06<narcan>supersede change the "search" field into resolv.conf
