00:36<cconstantine>Hey guys, I'm trying to get Debian Jessie (aws) to use a local dns server (consul) for name resolution. I can use `dig @localhost` to resolve with the local dns server, but adding it to /etc/resolv.conf doesn't seem to do anything. resolv.conf isn't getting overridden, but changing it doesn't seem to do anything. Is there something I need to restart to get this workign?

04:09<newARM>any suggestions on rebuilding this?
04:09<jm_>you mean cache and lists files?
04:10<newARM>correct
04:10<newARM>it seems to think my native architecture is amd64 now
04:10<newARM>in other words dpkg --remove-architecture amd64 dpkg: warning: cannot remove non-foreign architecture 'amd64'

04:11<newARM>I got the list of installed packages from the x86 machine and have installed them with apt-get install
04:11<newARM>and then I moved /var
04:11<newARM>and it seems that debian/dpkg/apt doesn't think they're installed any more
04:11<newARM>so I installed them all again
04:12<newARM>seems to have worked...but I still have a few conflicts where it thinks :amd64 and :armhf of the same package is installed

04:17<newARM>ahh...seems that file is created as dkpg etc performs tasks since the first install of the system....now the issue I suppose is that I've hosed that file when I copied /var
04:17<newARM>and now the one I have is incorrect
04:17<jm_>indeed
04:17<newARM>how do I rebuild it?
04:18<jm_>manually or restore it form backup
04:18<newARM>manually
04:18<newARM>no sane backup
04:18<newARM>(I'm a noob moving a server from x86 VMWare instance to a new raspberry pi - trying to save energy ha!)
04:19<newARM>All my services are working. Just don't want problems with apt coming back to bite me later as updates come out

04:21<grove>Copying /var/ between architectures sounds like a recipe for trouble. I wouldn't be sure you've seen everything yet, and also recommend a reinstall

12:07<imMute>On a related note, I have a package that depends on the kernel having a particular patch applied (for which I have a script that pulls the latest debian linux package, adds my patch, then builds everything). What would the proper way for my package to depend on that kernel be? I *was* using >= 3.16.17-ckt11-1+foo8u because the script changes the version string slightly, but this new -ckt20 version would
12:07<imMute>also satisfy that dependency which is incorrect. I guess what I really want is a dep like (= *+foo8u*)

12:13<tzafrir>imMute, you can depend on having a kernel package installed.
12:14<tzafrir>Depending on it being the kernel running on the system is out of the scope of the packages system

20:30<twb>I put Debian kiosks in prisons. Each inmate has their own login account. Because it causes operations staff grief, I should not allow screen locking or blanking, so e.g. xscreensaver isn't installed. But some kiosks are in communal areas, so I want to force a *logout* (or reboot) if the inmate walks off and leaves it logged in.
20:31<twb>Is there an existing package that can do this? If they can reconfigure it for locking by editing dotfiles, it's not usable for me.
