00:44<foreverska>Plymouth is dumb
00:46<twb>vortek: they do different jobs
00:46<vortek>oh
00:46<foreverska>Whoever thought "The splash screen should wait for an internet connection to be established" should be taken out back.
00:46<twb>plymouth starts after grub finishes, it starts in the ramdisk and is terminated (typically) when the display manager is ready
00:46<twb>foreverska: fedora
00:47<twb>foreverska: as usual, it comes from trying, and failing, to copy what Apple and Microsoft are already doing
00:47-!-Dykmu7 [~Dykmu7@62.109.10.237] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:48<foreverska>They need to cut it the hell out. and for that matter Ubuntu devs are out of their minds for prescribing it as part of a minimum system.
00:48<twb>foreverska: even on ubuntu servers! :/
00:48<foreverska>EXACTLY. You can't do a netinstall without getting stupid Plymouth
00:49<twb>They told me in 2008 they'd fix it by 2010.
00:49<twb>Anyway, we're off-topic
00:49<twb>vortek: do you need more help?
00:49<foreverska>Yea, plymouth is dumb. Don't use it.
00:49<Hydroxide>if you want to continue that conversation, do so in #debian-offtopic or elsewhere :)
00:49<Hydroxide>(as twb suggested)
00:49<foreverska>I've said my peace
00:50<vortek>so is one better then other

00:50<vortek>?
00:50<twb>vortek: no, because they do different jobs
00:50<foreverska>Apples and oranges
00:51<twb>vortek: it's like saying which is better for my house - doors or windows
00:51<detly>so aptitude on my stretch vm could only upgrade packages if it removed ifupdown and resolvconf - naturally now that machine cannot connect to the internet
00:51<twb>And foreverska & me are like "you don't need a door, just crawl under the wall"
00:51<detly>is there a guide somewhere for manually piecing together an internet connection without these tools?
00:51<jm_>support for stretch is in #debian-next
00:51<Hydroxide>vortek if you want a splash screen on debian from the bootloader all the way through the display manager, you have to use both grub2 and plymouth. (this is separate from arguments about what is well designed or badly designed)
00:51<detly>ah
00:52-!-mint [~mint@2601:40f:4200:2f25:e94c:3803:b308:3357] has joined #debian
00:52<Hydroxide>vortek: err, you have to use both of those splash screens. if you only use one you get a splash screen for only the corresponding part of the process.
00:52<vortek>ok
00:53<Hydroxide>I use plymouth on my laptop but am not claiming anything about good design or bad design :)
00:53<Hydroxide>extended rants about plymouth design also belong in #debian-offtopic; attempts to help people get their debian stable system configured with plymouth if they want it are of course fine here.

01:30<reljicb_>hi jm_! I'm not experienced with linux. I just follow instructions. What else you propose I do instead of building my own kernel?
01:31<twb>Oh sorry - somehow I thought you were talking to me
01:31<jm_>!bpo kernel
01:31<dpkg>Newer kernels for Debian stable releases are available from the "jessie-backports" repository. Ask me about <jessie backports> to modify your sources.list, then run «aptitude update». To install the current backported kernel: «aptitude -t jessie-backports install linux-image-`uname -r|sed 's,[^-]*-[^-]*-,,'`». To list available backported kernel image packages: «aptitude search '?narrow(~nlinux-image,?origin(Debian Backports))'».
01:31<jm_>reljicb_: ^^^^^^
01:32<jm_>for custom kernel make sure you also build initrd image for it if it's the same (or similar) config as debian kernels
01:32<twb>reljicb_: in general, compiling the kernel yourself is not needed and not good

02:49<larjona>Hi Debian users. I use icedove in Debian stable and when I try to send a message with a custom header, the other headers (to:, Date:, subject: etc) break and the message is sent with empty sender or recipient, empty subject, empty date... (the body is ok). Anybody can reproduce the problem? For adding a custom header, go to Edit > preferences > advanced > config editor, say "yes, I'll be careful", and then write mail.compose.other.header,
02:49<larjona>double click, and add a custom header, for example "Reviewed". Then compose a message, select your recipient, drop down the "To:" to select your "Reviewed:" custom header and fill in a mail address, fill in the subject and body, and send; then go to "Sent" folder to see if the mail is ok or the headers got broken.
02:50<twb>larjona: I don't use icedove, sorry. I think that is the same as thunderbird? You could try also asking the thunderbird support group.
02:51<twb>dpkg bot says that's ask #thunderbird on irc.mozilla.org.

02:52<jm_>!icedove
02:52<dpkg>Icedove is a DFSG-free fork of Mozilla Thunderbird, a cross-platform email client, replacing Thunderbird in Debian as of 5.0 "Lenny". Debian is unable to distribute Mozilla Thunderbird as-is due to trademark restrictions, see <why icedove>. Since July 2013, Icedove in Debian <stable> is based on the Extended Support Release (ESR) branch. For help with upstream issues, ask #thunderbird on irc.mozilla.org. http://wiki.debian.org/Icedove

13:46<dan1>I am going to upgrade from Debian 7 to Debian 8. According to the release notes I should mount all needed partitions read-write, with a command like "# mount -o remount,rw /mountpoint".
13:46<dan1>What is /mountpoint?
13:46<K-202>no answer so I'm going to perform tests with priority 49 or 50
13:47<dan1>I don't understand that step.
13:47<root_>I have a question
13:47<K-202>dan1, for example / is your mount point for linux partition
13:48<K-202>dan1, type "df" in console

16:52<G33KY>Theres only one account which is used, "g33ky". It's just an extra unneeded step to mount it in /media/g33ky/. Plus my other devices seem to mount things in /media, so I sometimes mix them up when using cd.

16:52<llldino>lindi-, I think both would work, I'm not sure if fstab is checked when mounting a disk
16:52<llldino>Or if fstab is only checked on boot
16:53<G33KY>I checked /etc/fstab and there didnt seem to be any reference to the mount point, only to /dev/mmcblk0 (the boot device)
16:53<lindi->llldino: configuring a mount point for every USB stick and user in fstab is not exactly easy
16:54<llldino>lindi-, Oh, I thought he only had 1 device, I misread his first post
16:54<lindi->G33KY: why do you want it to be /media?
16:55<G33KY>Because thats where my other machines mount it, and its better to have consistency?
16:55<G33KY>And using /media/g33ky is unnessecary
16:56<lindi->G33KY: ah, are they using some other distro?
16:56<lindi->G33KY: I guess it's unnecessary if you only have one user but it's designed for multi-user case
16:56<G33KY>The VM I have is running Debian 7 Wheezy, and that used /media

19:30<CuteMeOwnThroat>and I think it's the only one which does so by default
19:31<TheAmorphous>Following a forum post I installed a dummy video driver, added nomodeset to a grub variable and created a xorg.conf
19:32<CuteMeOwnThroat>TheAmorphous, you could e.g. install vnc4server
19:32<TheAmorphous>Since doing that I've been unable to get my desktop back.
19:32<TheAmorphous>Even though I've undone all of those changes, including deleting xorg.conf (which didn't exist before this)
19:32<CuteMeOwnThroat>then just run vnc4server -geometry 1800x1200 or so
19:33<CuteMeOwnThroat>or maybe tightvncserver
19:33<TheAmorphous>So ditch x11vnc altogether?
19:33<CuteMeOwnThroat>you can keep it installed
19:34<CuteMeOwnThroat>you also don't *need* an X server with x11vnc
19:35<TheAmorphous>So what would cause this error without the monitor plugged in?
19:36<CuteMeOwnThroat>in xorg?
19:36<TheAmorphous>Well, I mean, I just have no Gnome desktop at all unless a monitor is plugged in now
19:36<CuteMeOwnThroat>it cannot tell what resolution
19:36<TheAmorphous>I'd honestly rather just fix that for now and go back to how I had it set up before. Then I can deal with trying a new VNC server.
19:37<TheAmorphous>Appreciate you bearing with me, btw. I'm sure I'm coming across a bit thick. Pretty unfamiliar with this corner of Linux.
19:37<CuteMeOwnThroat>you mean... you prefer learning about a complicated setup that maybe doesn't make very much sense instead of switching to a much simpler setup?

19:43<CuteMeOwnThroat>well, if security isn't an issue...
19:44<TheAmorphous>Baby steps. I'd like to set up SSH tunneling eventually but this is a new setup and as I said, I'm still learning Linux.
19:44<CuteMeOwnThroat>the x11vnc manpage gives the command for connecting over an ssh tunnel
19:44<TheAmorphous>I just followed a forum post guide to get X11VNC up and running, and then connect through TightVNC client on a Windows box on the same LAN. That's worked fine until I started fiddling with resolution properties.

20:08<CuteMeOwnThroat>you can also try to run xterm -display :1 from the ssh promt...
20:08<CuteMeOwnThroat>at least on my jessie, that just turns up inside the vnc
20:08<TheAmorphous>What does that do?

20:09<CuteMeOwnThroat>then can start other things from that
20:09<TheAmorphous>Well as of right now I'm VNCed into X11VNC with a functioning Gnome desktop, but only because a monitor is plugged in
