01:39<twb>themill: FTR, the overlay vs. overlayfs in /etc/initramfs-tools was my fault, because I changed "apt-get install live-boot -t stretch" to "apt-get install live-boot/stretch", and it picked live-boot-initramfs-tools/jessie because live-boot's inter-package deps are looser than I expected

01:40<foffa>how to tell if i have missing file ?
01:40<twb>foffa: as in, a package installed it, then someone deleted it?
01:40<foffa>yes
01:41<twb>debsums
01:41<foffa>sorry im new here how to do that
01:41<twb>!debsums
01:41<dpkg>[debsums] a utility that will check a package's files against their checksums. The "-a" argument will instruct it to also check configuration files: "aptitude install debsums; debsums -a -s". Most packages come with md5sums included in the package; if apt's package cache is clean, then generate missing sums with "aptitude reinstall `debsums -l`". Ask me about <md5sums>.
01:42<twb>foffa: that's for detecting modifications; you might need to tweak the options to report deletions, I'm not sure.
01:42<foffa>ok another question > for some reason my application is deleted with it self WHY
01:42<twb>foffa: I don't understand

01:43<twb>If the package was uninstalled normally, check /var/log/apt* and /var/log/dpkg*
01:43<foffa>some application that come with gnome is missing
01:43<foffa>map,tweak-tool, ect
01:44<twb>foffa: they were installed before?
01:44<foffa>yes
01:45<foffa>twb, yes
01:45<twb>foffa: then there will be a log. Check the log.

01:58<twb>When a package is installed not because you asked for it, but because something else needed it, it's called "auto-installed".
01:58<twb>And autoremove uninstalls such packages that aren't needed anymore
01:58<twb>For some reason, your system thought all those things were auto-installed & not needed
01:59<foffa>and how to return it back
01:59<twb>It is easy to just apt-get install them again, but be on the lookout for this happening again

02:03<jm_>!install usb
02:03<dpkg>You can install Debian from a USB stick/thumbdrive/pen drive/key on x86 systems, as long as your system's BIOS can boot from USB. Details are in the Installation Guide, see http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/amd64/ch04s03 and ask me about <install debian> for hybrid CD/DVD images. Use http://sf.net/projects/win32diskimager/ to write images from Windows. For BIOSes not capable of USB boot, ask me about <plop>.

06:00<brt_>and /etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/bind9.service -> /lib/systemd/system/bind9.service

23:50<user013>is it a bad idea to add a cron job for apt-get update && apt-get upgrade -y on root crontab?
23:50<user013>something like:
23:50<user013>0 0 * * * apt-get update && apt-get upgrade -y
23:52<user013>and if it is a bad idea, I'd like to know why and that what's the better way to do it...
23:53<user013>please note that this machine is wheezy and i do NOT want to automatically upgrade to jessie.
