00:00<PovAddict>user013: don't make your own cronjobs
00:01<PovAddict>user013: there is an unattended-upgrades to handle that already, in a much more robust way
00:01<PovAddict>can send you email when periodic upgrades fail etc etc
00:02-!-Guest43 [~magyar@c-76-21-0-125.hsd1.ca.comcast.net] has quit [Quit: Riding the split]
00:02<twb>+1 for unattended-upgrades
00:02<PovAddict>your reinvented wheel will be more square for sure
00:02<twb>http://sprunge.us/UEQb 'quickstart' notes for u-a
00:02<user013>PovAddict: so what's the difference between cron-apt and unattended-upgrades
00:03<user013>or twb ^
00:03<PovAddict>I don't have actual experience with either, I only use the option to download package *lists* every day, but not install updates
00:03-!-iflema_ [~weechat@120.155.62.126] has joined #debian
00:03<PovAddict>all I can say is that either cron-apt or unattended-upgrades will be better than shoving an "apt-get upgrade" into your crontab
00:03<PovAddict>can't give an opinion on cron-apt vs unattended-upgrades
00:04-!-a7ndrew [~andrew@psr1257.be] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
00:04<twb>user013: cron-apt is older and dumber, IIRC

00:46<user013>twb: what fills /boot up?
00:46<user013>and how to avoid that?
00:46<nevyn>new kernels
00:47<user013>ah
00:47<nevyn>don't partition out /boot
00:47*nevyn likes to kill sacred cows
00:47<user013>would an apt-get autoremove or apt-get clean, clean the old ones up?
00:47<jm_>no

00:48<jm_>the same way you get rid of old packages
00:49<twb>nevyn: typically /boot is separate because LUKS, or LVM + RAID.

00:49<twb>user013: by default kernels are blacklisted so that the autoremove tools will not ever remove them
00:49<twb>user013: this is to avoid accidentally removing a running kernel
00:50<twb>user013: if you really want, you can change this in /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/ somewhere
00:52<themill>there's actually a complicated postinst dance now to only keep the last two kernels from being autoremoved

03:41<quack>I have a quick question
03:41<quack>I have a production mail server that is currently on Squeeze. Support for Squeeze ends in February (I've only just realized this). So I'm looking to upgrade to Wheezy using the following steps.
03:41<quack>1. Backup important data
03:41<quack>2. Update all packages to their latest version on Squeeze
03:41<quack>3. Update sources.list to use the Wheeze repos
03:41<quack>4. apt-get update
03:41<quack>5. apt-get dist-upgrade -d
03:41<quack>6. apt-get upgrade
03:41-!-sUbMuNdO [~WiLcLeFe@187-41-34-221.user.veloxzone.com.br] has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
03:41<quack>7. apt-get dist-upgrade
03:41<quack>8. Reboot
03:41<quack>My question is, how risky is this approach? I don't have physical access to the server & I don't want to have extended periods of downtime (I'm thinking ~5 minutes for the reboot).
03:42<quack>Is there a possibility that I will corrupt my system and if so, what is the percentage possibility? There isn't too much on the server other than a basic install and mail services.
03:42<jm_>follow wheezy release notes - there's exact upgrade procedure documented there
03:42<quack>jm_, I will take a look
03:42<grove>Why only to wheezy? Current stable is Jessie
03:43<quack>Is there more risk upgrading to jessie?
03:44<jm_>you can't skip on wheezy upgrade though

03:47<grove>Not much more risk (any upgrade is technically risky, but upgrades between stable releases of Debian, carries very low risk) , but you'll probably get newer versions of the programs you use, which typically makes it easier to find help, and you'll get on a distro that is going to be supported longer

06:16<gour>i've netbook of my wife's friend and atm she has some old (ancient) linux mint installed with ff-18.0 and she had problems using facebook, skype etc. now i'm going to put debian on it, but wonder whether to use stable or testing? (personally i use sid)
06:17<gour>any hint?
06:17<gour>she mostly needs reasonably up-to-date browser and working skype. how is stable (jessie) in regard?

06:20<gour>of course, i'll be the one to maintain it...

06:21<salad>afaik flash for firefox & derivatives has been abandoned for a while on linux, so it's an older version
06:22<salad>not the case for chromium though
06:22<jm_>you can get up to date iceweasel from mozilla.debian.net
06:23<gour>personally i don't have problems with flash on sid..

06:24<gour>jm_: i'd like to minimize my maintain. admin time, but still to have happy 'customer'
06:25<jm_>gour: you simply put it in sources.list, install it and it'll be updated from there ...
06:25<gour>jm_: ok, but what about the rest of OS?
06:26<jm_>gour: that will only get security/important fixes
06:27<gour>jm_: i mean stable vs testing? she also told me to install chromium which is not so old in jessie
06:28<jm_>gour: maybe ask #debian-next what their experiences are
06:29<gour>ok
06:29<jm_>you'd probably want stable if you want to ensure no unexpected extra work
06:31<salad>I use testing/stretch, update often and do get the occasional odd issue / breakage
06:32<salad>I'd probably stick with stable for PC's that aren't my own daily drivers

15:56<KNUBBIG>Hi! I'm trying to install the NVidia Driver on a machine I only have SSH access to. I've tried via NVidia's homepage, the official Debian repos as well as the SteamOS repo. Each time I get "you do not appear to be using the NVidia X driver" upon running nvidia-settings. Running nvidia-xconfig and rebooting/etc. didn't help. Any ideas?
15:57<towo`>and for what you want the nvidia driver on a machine, where you have only ssh access?
15:58<towo`>and nvidia-settings over ssh is totaly useless
15:58<KNUBBIG>1) Learning effect 2) Running some graphical programs (I'm using ssh -X)

20:30<k-man>i just think its somewhat hidden and distant from the imidiate problem of the title not changing. in fact its being change every time you press enter, but its being changed to the same thing each time. so even if you manually try and set the title with something like echo -ne "\033]0;$(date)\007" it gets clobbered again
20:30<k-man>anyway, thats just my 2c worth
