01:31<R4F_Debian>Hi all, I would like to know if there is risk of Debian package management damage all the installation because of a rolling release
01:31<R4F_Debian>Mine's Debian Jessie 8.3
01:31<twb>debian stable isn't a rolling release
01:32<R4F_Debian>Hi twb, thanks for attention !
01:32<R4F_Debian>twb, I use stable version, but in the case of Debian Potato, for example...
01:32<twb>The whole point of debian stable, is that by using it, things won't randomly break
01:32-!-chomwitt [~chomwitt@athedsl-269355.home.otenet.gr] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
01:32<twb>I do not know what is "debian potato"
01:32<twb>Do you mean the very old release, from 2002?
01:32<R4F_Debian>yes
01:33<twb>You are upgrading *from* potato?
01:34<R4F_Debian>no twb, I never saw a potato running in my life. I have a friend who gave up his computer in 2003, but it's not damaged, and with Debian Potato still installed in it
01:34<R4F_Debian>he told me about this happening, and I would like to know if it should be possible, if you managed well this old Debian version
01:34<twb>You should back up any data, then do a clean install
01:35<R4F_Debian>you mean format again ?
01:35<twb>Yes.
01:35<twb>To use debian potato now, is dangerous
01:35<R4F_Debian>twb, do you know this version of Debian ?
01:35<twb>Because potato does not get security updates
01:36-!-lionel [~lionel@91.224.149.14] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
01:37<R4F_Debian>so, in any case, it should be possible he damage the system because a rolling release ? Debian installation should be responsible for this damage, or his wrong operation in Debian ?
01:37<twb>I do not understand
01:37<twb>The computer does not work?
01:37<R4F_Debian>sorry, my english is terrible. let me try again
01:37<R4F_Debian>no
01:37<R4F_Debian>not exactly it doesn't work
01:38<R4F_Debian>it runs but quite unstable, after this procedure he tried - rolling release
01:38<R4F_Debian>as he says, but I never saw this computer
01:38-!-TeslasMHD [foobar@ip92345faf.dynamic.kabel-deutschland.de] has joined #debian
01:38<twb>Maybe he installed "testing" instead of "stable
01:39<R4F_Debian>let me try again, sorry for my horrible english
01:39<R4F_Debian>I see
01:39<twb>If the hardware is OK, you should just install debian stable.

01:42<twb>R4F_Debian: because your hardware is old, the default GUI -- GNOME -- might be slow. Maybe you want XFCE or LXDE instead.
01:42<R4F_Debian>I see, in this case...
01:42<R4F_Debian>but all my machines run Debian Squeeze and Jessie
01:44<twb>The choice of GUI is separate from the OS version
01:44<R4F_Debian>I see
01:44<twb>Jessie has GNOME and XFCE and LXDE and KDE. Squeeze has them all, too

01:45<R4F_Debian>I tried to explain to you if the installation problem occurred because of system limitation and version, or the more likely it happened because of user has made operational errors that led to damage the installation
01:46<R4F_Debian>the 'Potato' case
01:46<R4F_Debian>My Jessie I use mate
01:46<twb>yea mate is another choice
01:47<twb>ralph: about your friend's problem - I don't know. It is hard to know, because it happened in 2003 :-)
01:48<jm_>you never explained what the damage is, you only said "it's not damaged"
01:49<twb>If the hardware is OK, who cares - just reinstall.
01:49<twb>potato is too old to worry about

01:50<R4F_Debian>jm_, he was not precise on this information, but it seemed to me, it is running unstable, the system hangs sometimes an application closes suddenly, things like that
01:51<twb>If you get problems on Jessie, we can investigate
01:52<R4F_Debian>but do not think that the problem occurred because of Debian, but because the user has committed serious errors when trying to manage it

01:52<twb>I do not want to say "it is his fault", because sometimes it is Debian's fault :-)
01:53<R4F_Debian>twb, I intend to prepare another Debian Installation, and just for testing, in order to help the Project to fix some issues, if they exist

01:53<twb>Debian testing often has little problems, and sometimes big problems
01:53<R4F_Debian>Fortunatelly Debian is Precise like a 'swiss watch' today
01:54<twb>It depends which bits
01:54<twb>Some bits are still very horrible
01:54<R4F_Debian>My Debian is always precise, fast and stable
01:54<R4F_Debian>you refer to some 32 bit versions ?
01:54<twb>No some packages
01:55<twb>For example, the code to mount an encrypted root filesystem is very ugly
01:55<R4F_Debian>oh, I see, I just saw a strange thing, I installed any package and brasero was installed together, without my permission ( I didn't want brasero installed )
01:55<twb>OK, we can investigate that
01:55<twb>If you have aptitude, you can run "aptitude why brasero"
01:55<jm_>aptitude why brasero
01:55<jm_>:)
01:56<R4F_Debian>and it has happened with other application, but for not being not to be vague and imprecise, I will relate to you as you complete these checks and installing the same package in the new installation, OK
01:56<twb>For example, if I run "aptitude why acl" it says systemd is the reason
01:57<R4F_Debian>I Love Debian and Debian Community - Debian Project is Marvellous !
01:57<twb>(Actually, it doesn't... some bug there!)
01:57<R4F_Debian>Oh, thanks a lot jm_, I will do it afterwards !
01:58<twb>But if I try to remove acl, it tells me "systemd depends on acl."
01:58<R4F_Debian>'aptitude why brasero ' and 'aptitude why acl'.. ok
01:58<twb>acl is just an example -- I do not have brasero
01:58<R4F_Debian>I see
01:58<twb>"acl" is a package name
01:58<R4F_Debian>I commonly use k3b in my Debian Installations
01:59<R4F_Debian>acl refers to ... what kind of package, please ?
01:59<twb>it is a helper package, a utility
01:59<R4F_Debian>oh, I see !
02:00<twb>You can do "apt-cache show acl" to see it

02:01<R4F_Debian>a last question, twb, if you permit me, please... HP Company runs Debian on their Servers ? Or just HP-UX ?
02:01<twb>I guess HP runs many OSs
02:02<twb>I think HP-UX is not used much by anyone, now
02:02<R4F_Debian>I have already operated some HP-UX in the past, but not as UNIX Admin...
02:02<R4F_Debian>currently they use Debian also ?
02:02<twb>https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HP-UX says they still make new HP-UX releases
02:03<R4F_Debian>oh, ok, but in the case of Debian ? Do you know if they use Debian also ?
02:03<twb>Probably not
02:03<R4F_Debian>not ?

06:42<EmleyMoor>I've got a little problem I expect to be due to (and fixable in) netfilter/iptables. When I try to connect my mobile phone over my own WiFi to the XMPP server I run here, it seems never to actually get through. I suspect this is because the router does not know what to do with traffic on the 192.168... addresses when aimed at a public IPv4 address here, and that the XMPP client on the phone is not attemp
06:42<EmleyMoor>ting IPv6. Is there any rule I could ...
06:42<EmleyMoor>... add to the ip4table to allow such traffic?
06:42-!-piper [~piper@00012f3a.user.oftc.net] has joined #debian
06:44<duclicsic>EmleyMoor: so your phone is on this 192.168 network, and is trying to talk to an XMPP server on the same network but via a public IP?
06:44<duclicsic>presumably there is a DNAT rule on the gatway to forward the traffic?
06:45-!-tlaxkit [~hexchat@95.63.152.106] has joined #debian
06:46-!-tjader [~tjader@189.60.218.22] has joined #debian
06:46<EmleyMoor>duclicsic: There is a SNAT rule only, as far as NAT rules go
06:46<duclicsic>so the xmpp server actually has a proper routed public ip?
06:46<duclicsic>not a port forward?
06:46<EmleyMoor>duclicsic: Yes, a proper routed IP
06:47<duclicsic>what is the SNAT rule?
06:47<EmleyMoor>-A POSTROUTING -s 192.168.0.0/24 -m comment --comment NAT -j SNAT --to-source 8
06:47<EmleyMoor>1.187.150.62
06:48<EmleyMoor>(line break not really there)
06:49<duclicsic>so the connection from the phone to the xmpp server hits this rule?
06:49<duclicsic>that public ip isn't the one belonging to the xmpp server is it?
06:49<EmleyMoor>duclicsic: Hard to tell... it may.
06:49<EmleyMoor>That public IP belongs only to the router for the purpose of SNAT
06:49<duclicsic>k
06:50<duclicsic>well without being able to see all your routing tables and whole iptables set i'm not sure what might be wrong
06:50<duclicsic>do the packets from the phone arrive at the server?
06:50<duclicsic>this is where tcpdump is your best friend
06:50<jm_>you can list counters with -v and see if it increases
06:51<duclicsic>indeed, but they could be increasing due to anything
06:51<EmleyMoor>duclicsic: I don't think they do - but I will try tcpdump

06:59<duclicsic>what is the source address on the packets?
06:59<EmleyMoor>The SNAT address
06:59<duclicsic>ok, does the server have a route for that ip?
07:00<duclicsic>ip route get 81.187.150.62
07:00<EmleyMoor>Shows it's on eth0
07:00<duclicsic>the issue may be that it thinks it's a directly connected network, and as such tries to do an ARP resolution on it rather than sending the response back to the router
07:01<duclicsic>EmleyMoor: yeah sounds like that's your problem then
07:01-!-Texou [~Texou@000178ec.user.oftc.net] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
07:01<EmleyMoor>Ah... so, what could I do to resolve it?
07:01<duclicsic>don't SNAT that traffic
07:02<duclicsic>does the xmpp server have an interface in the 192.168 range?
07:02<EmleyMoor>Hmmm... what's a way to do that in netfilterese? Yes, it does...
07:02<duclicsic>right, well if it has an interface in that range that causes more trouble. you might need to do an SNAT and a DNAT to make it work
07:03-!-HASKELHALAS [~HASKELHAL@105.100.32.114] has joined #debian
07:04<duclicsic>so it's difficult for me to give you an exact instruction because I don't know what that existing SNAT rule is doing, whether it's important for something else for instance..

07:04<duclicsic>but what you want to do is SNAT the traffic from the phone to the private IP belonging to the router, not the public
07:04<duclicsic>so if the router has a 192.168 address, snat to that instead of the public
07:04<EmleyMoor>That rule is important so that devices without a public IPv4 address (phones, laptops etc.) can reach the outside world
07:04<duclicsic>this will force the xmpp server to send the response back to the router

07:05<EmleyMoor>Can that be done while keeping the address the same?
07:05<duclicsic>like we're seeing here
07:05<duclicsic>yes
07:06<duclicsic>you just have to add "-o ethX" to the rule, where "ethX" is your WAN interface
07:07<duclicsic>you've at least limited it to those packets with a 192.168 source address, but we don't want to match them when they're not destined for the internet
07:07<EmleyMoor>duclicsic: Ah, but now we have a problem in that there are two potential interfaces... both ppp, one over Ethernet, one not...
07:07<duclicsic>ok so instead do "! -o ethY" where ethY is your LAN interface
07:07<EmleyMoor>OH...
07:07<EmleyMoor>Ah,

07:11<duclicsic>now what should happen is that the client will send a packet to the xmpp server via the router, the router shouldn't do any nat on that, the xmpp server receives it and generates a response, but as it has a directly connected route to 192.168.. it will send it direct over the lan instead of via the router
07:11<duclicsic>so you're getting some asymmetric traffic flow there, but it should work

17:57<slurik>hi folks im a novice user and im trying to setup a vnc server on a debian machine. I'm familiar with doing this on a raspberry pi (wheezy) but am running jessie on this box. I installed tightvncserver through apt-get and can only keep the desktop open if vncserver is initiated by root. if it is initiated by a regular user it will start the service, allow a connection, boot to the kde desktop then close. Any
17:57<slurik> futher reconnection attempts are refused by the host. Anyone have any insight for me as to what may be going wrong?
17:59<slurik>I installed Jessie by netinstall and the kde environment in the initial install, no changes
17:59<sney>install method won't make a difference.
17:59<slurik>i didnt expect as much im just trying to give details
