11:53<sney>oh I see it's some pre-packaged combo deal. This is not in debian and is not supported here. if you need to use this package, you will need to contact them for support
11:54<scootergrisen>Yeah LAMPP has apache and mysql and other stuff. Suppolsy it should be easier to setup
11:54<mozmck>I'm making a custom package for an application, and I have a shell script which my application will run when instructed. Where should that script go? It would seem to me /usr/bin should not be cluttered with things like that...
11:54<sney>Otherwise, you can follow this to get a real LAMP server like you would see on the internet: https://wiki.debian.org/LaMp and get security updates as a bonus.
11:54<scootergrisen>So what would be the "correct" debian supported way to do it? Install Apache and MySQL from the package manager?

14:32<sney>https://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/errata "this is a list of known problems in the stretch alpha 5 release of the debian installer." pretty straightforward. meh
14:33<asdsad>It also means that they are related to the version of OS which the installer points to. meh

14:33*asdsad throw something randomly
14:34<sney>if you accept the fact that Debian itself has no version when it is testing or unstable, then the rest falls into place pretty cleanly.
14:34<sney>anyway, #debian-next for testing/unstable queries, and #debian-boot for installer discussion.
14:35<asdsad>You should more prioritize @trk204 question lol
14:36<sney>I missed it under all this garbage.
14:36<asdsad>I agree that the answers were garbage except mine thats why i pointed him out lol
14:36<markybob>asdsad, everyone in here is wrong but you, you're correct.
14:37<trk204>Well to be honest, my question probably belongs in #debian-boot now that I think of it
14:37<asdsad>Am always correct, except when i am not.
14:37<sney>trk204: there used to be installers with backport kernels but it looks like they're no longer maintained
14:37<sney>trk204: I would boot with the jessie livecd and then use debootstrap
14:37<trk204>Yeah I found the page with backported installers up to squeeze
14:38<sney>especially since you will need to run the OS with a bpo kernel
14:39<trk204>I have remastered many a d-i iso, just never ripped out the kernel. And yeah I was going to add the bpo repo after the installation but before reboot

19:24<R4F_Debian>Hi all, recently I read an article written by a person who probably hates Debian and, according his declarations, he wrote a 'trojan' for Debian through PPAs: Ex: I wrote a trojan just to see if the PPA would push it and it did. LOL
19:25<R4F_Debian>Is that possible ? I'm sure not if you use only official stable repositories, but in the case of 'unstable' should it be possible ?
19:25<R4F_Debian>correcting: not 'through' PPA

21:05<sney>hi
21:05<Guest2545>This is the general IRC for debian, correct?
21:05<sney>yes
21:05<Guest2545>Cool, I had some questions related to debian and wasn't sure where to look, so I came here
21:06<Guest2545>How does the firewall for debian work? I'm confused about it
21:07<Jn_Kell>Hi all, i've a question about the debian/docs file (generated by dh_make). Where does debuild look for the files mentioned there?
21:07<sney>the firewall is iptables, there's a lot of general documentation for iptables that applies to debian
21:08<Guest2545>I see netfilter come up also, is there more than one firewall?
21:08-!-xax34324__ [~xax34324@95.239.35.122] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
21:08-!-weinzwang [~weinzwang@paris089.server4you.de] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
21:08<sney>netfilter and iptables are roughly the same thing
21:09<sney>it's the linux kernel firewall. iptables is the command you use to manage it. it's also called netfilter for some reason I'm not familiar with.
21:09<Guest2545>Ok, so imagine iptables as a form of netfilters
21:10<sney>I guess. haha there's probably a website that explains this better. I don't use iptables in production so I'm not very familiar with it
21:10<Arcade>iptables has more than just netfilter Guest2545
21:10-!-alumno_ [~alumno@181.91.51.240] has joined #debian
21:10<Arcade>one sec I pull up a page
21:10<alumno_>hola
21:11<sney>the iptables support channel is called #netfilter, also. it's on freenode. they expect you to do your research there
21:11<Guest2545>Does the debian firewall require any fancy configuration to be safe or is the default out of the box install of debian good enough?
21:12-!-alumno_ [~alumno@181.91.51.240] has quit []
21:13<sney>debian does not ship with any firewall enabled
21:13<markybob>Guest2545, iptables is really very tricky. you have to read a lot. but that's offtopic. #netfilter on frreenode
21:13<markybob>freenode*
21:14<Arcade>thanks markybob was looking for that :D
21:14<sney>but generally, you don't need to use iptables extensively when securing a debian server, unless it's exposed directly to the public internet with no other filtering devices
21:14<sney>just configure your services properly, and use fail2ban if necessary
21:15<markybob>fail2ban is stupid
21:15<Guest2545>One last question before I leave: I remember ubuntu/mint came with ufw by default and installed it a while back along with gufw. Is that enough to be secure? Sorry if I sound paranoid, I'm using debian as a home user after a long time windows user and am still adjusting
21:16<sney>it's probably too much, and/or doing nothing
21:16<sney>don't approach it like windows.
21:16<Guest2545>how should I approach it?
21:16<markybob>Guest2545, debian has gufw. it's not enough
21:16<Arcade>gufw works ok Guest2545 just not installed by default
21:17<Guest2545>Arcade: Yeah, I installed and enabled it after I installed debian
21:17<markybob>Guest2545, disable ssh logins. only use keys. use letsencrypt.org for https for apache or whatever server you want. stuff like that. if you want you can use two factor authentication for ssh
21:18<Guest2545>markybob: I'm not using this as a server, but I'll disabled ssh logins anyways
21:18<Arcade>Guest2545, just block incoming is probably all you need. if its for a server you do it diffrent
21:18<markybob>Guest2545, the main rule? read your fucking logs
21:18<sney>I administer about 10 debian VMs and servers in production. the only one that has iptables or antivirus on it is the public mailserver. the others are just responsibly configured. everything with linux systems is fairly transparent and you can understand exactly what they're doing and why. you don't need to assume it's cheesecloth by default the way windows is.

21:19<sney>if your system is a desktop on a private network in your house then you do not need to run a firewall on it. but it probably won't do you any harm if you want to learn about it anyway.

21:31<sney>it's not to say that a malicious person couldn't ever sneak a package with a backdoor into an official repository... but it would be a significant effort
21:31<markybob>and on stable...that's laughable.
21:31<R4F_Debian>oh, and it would be rapidly detected by Debian Developers and rapidly fixed, I think

23:09<dakka>Need help with usb stick problems. Trying to get debian iso on there, i managed to get a network installer on there, but that wont actually install deb, just goes to a grub prompt
23:09<dakka>so i figured i would use full DVD image, which i am downloading (take an hour to get it)
23:09<PovAddict>what iso were you using before?
23:09<themill>grub is not involved at all with the installer
23:09<dakka>however i cant do anything with this USB stick anymore. Cant format it or clear it or repartition
23:09<dakka>I just downloaded it off debian site, let me get exact name

23:10<PovAddict>I doubt the DVD image will work any better
23:10<dakka>at any rate i used cp /dev/sdc
23:11<dakka>but i cant seem to reclaim this usb stick, even tried windows, that wont give me any options, aside from formating it to 466kb
23:11<dakka>I remember having this issue last time, took me hours to work out how to get these iso's working. Ended up being simple cp command (as apposed to DD which doesnt work at all)
23:12<dakka>I just want any installer to work. If grub is not involved in the installer why do get to a grub> prompt?
23:12<PovAddict>maybe you're not booting the usb drive but your actual hard disk?
23:12<dakka>last time i installed debian it simply went straight to the installer, not a grub prompt
23:13<dakka>there is nothing on the HDD, brand new system. Not even formated

23:15<dakka>I have installed debian about half a dozen times, and dozens via VM's...i did have this issue last time, but i solved it using cp iso /dev/sdc
23:15<dakka>the stick does boot, since it goes to a grub> prompt, but i have no idea why, or even what that is
23:15<PovAddict>maybe you removed the usb drive before the iso was fully copied?
23:15<PovAddict>it may be write-buffered

23:16<PovAddict>^ that
23:16<dakka>yes i did
23:16<dakka>before pulling it out
23:16<PovAddict>how are you trying to format?
23:17<dakka>I tried in windows, because linux fdisk wont even see this thing
23:17<PovAddict>does a /dev node for it appear?
23:17<dakka>strangely gparted sees it, but its all messed up
23:17-!-melany [~melany@cpe-31-15-135-10.cable.telemach.net] has quit []
23:17<dakka>i hasd to pull it out and in a few times before i saw it come up in dmesg
23:17<dakka>which currently states /dev/sdc
23:18<dakka>seems to change between sdc and sdd which i dont understand
23:18<dakka>(altho that may have happened when i swapped slots)
23:18<dakka>I want to try and start again, wipe this stick, and use the cp command again
23:18<dakka>currently it states there is no room when i try, since its already got the iso there
23:18<PovAddict>try wiping it, dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdc (make doubly sure you have the correct one, you said your disk is already empty but get in the habit of double-checking with dd)
23:18<dakka>i tried to delete in gparted, but its all messed up now
23:19<dakka>Oh wait, sorry let me explain this better....
23:19<dakka>I have a brand new NUC (intel mini PC) which i want debian on....
23:19<dakka>so on my local system I am using a usb stick so i can get an iso image on it
23:19<PovAddict>oh right
23:19<PovAddict>that's obvious, my bad
23:20<dakka>currently i have no devices on sdc or sdd (this is usually where the usb stick comes up)
23:20<dakka>i saw this somewhere: sudo dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/sdc bs=4k
23:20<PovAddict>I see no need to put random data on it
23:20<dakka>it actually worked on my other usb stick the 64gb one, which i fixed and works again
23:20<PovAddict>will just take longer
23:20<PovAddict>use zero
23:21<dakka>sorry i mean zero...crap...maybe thats what i did wrong...lol. No idea where i got that from
23:21<dakka>bs=4k is that necessary?
23:22<dakka>I should mention i wrote to a device by mistake yesterday, no idea how it worked, but instead of /dev/sdc i did sdc
23:22<PovAddict>if your usb drive has 4KB blocks, and you copy it in 512-byte blocks (dd's default), it will take longer and possibly contribute to wearing out the flash memory
23:22<dakka>i dont care about the flash drive, was 3 bucks, if it works once and i need to chuck it i will be happy
23:23<dakka>its why i got 2, i had issues last time, so figured i would get 2 this time
23:23<dakka>but i seem to be stuck...will try dd command now like u stated
23:23<dakka>dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdc
23:23<PovAddict>yeah, add bs=4k for speed
23:24<dakka>ah i see, ok will try without it, never used it without before
