00:01<acdimalev>Noticed because it's currently broken for my use (foreign / second-stage) on sid.

00:04<lemonman>browser couldnt find the file, so i have ventured into the same location on file manager. am currently in /usr/share/doc/ looking for anything similar to debian handbook
00:04<storge>lemonman: if it 'installed' successfully that's probably where it will be. in my system, it was installed into /usr/share/doc/debian-handbook/
00:05<lemonman>makes sense might try it again. the share/doc area has some good examples of how to use things. this is cool
00:05<storge>this is the opening page, as seen by my browser address bar
00:05<storge>file:///usr/share/doc/debian-handbook/html/en-US/advanced-administration.html
00:05<storge>maybe you can click that ^ right here in irc
00:06<storge>in some terminals, you would hold ctrl and click that link. or highlight/paste it
00:06<storge>(or go up a folder if you want another language than english)
00:06-!-paxmark9 [~paxtormar@198.144.158.14] has left #debian [Leaving]

00:08<storge>anyway, it's online at debian-handbook.info
00:08<lemonman>yeah just reading the online one lol
00:08<lemonman>file:///usr/share/doc/debian-handbook/html/en-US/advanced-administration.html (messaging this to myself)
00:08-!-Vyrus001 [~Vyrus001@c-67-168-134-237.hsd1.wa.comcast.net] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:08<storge>there are hordes of pages out there for the bash terminal. entire bash books online. also for other shells like zsh
00:08<storge>bash shell*
00:09<lemonman_>when did you start learning? (curoious to know how you got started)
00:09<storge>whereas the debian handbook is for debian the distro, bash is the most common shell used when you open a terminal
00:10<lemonman_>Right
00:11<storge>lemonman: well, about 2000 i was working in a book store and i was flipping through O-Reilly linux books, in 2001 i installed some redhat and mandrake dual-booting with windows, and by 2002 linux was pretty much my core operating system, with windows on virtual machines.
00:11-!-blue_sky [~justin@189.149.187.81.in-addr.arpa] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:11<storge>i still have an old xp in virtualbox on this laptop. i fire it up about once or twice a year for some reason.

00:13<storge>there's a lot of cool things you can do. especially in debian. if you're into astronomy, there are many packages you can install, from novice to astronomer-number-crunching-expert with a huge telescope. and that's just astronomy as one example. debian has a huge software repository. if i'm not mistaken, it's the largest software project in the world.

00:14-!-Guest3087 is now known as ml|_
00:14<storge>but by all means, try many distributions. use what works best for you. it might be something very different. for me its debian.
00:15-!-ml|_ is now known as Guest3088
00:16<lemonman_>sounds great i wish my iq didnt drop from 157 lol
00:18<storge>i mention that last part because as with anything, linux distros have their ardent users, and sometimes they get caught up in flame wars. my distro can beat up your distro kind of thing. i always say: use what works for you, forget the flames.

00:19<storge>i'm running a debian-testing on my laptop. if i was running a server in enterprise, i might or might not be running debian. they're tools, and if debian is the best i'd use it. if another tool/distro was better, i'd use that.
00:19<storge>best for my needs and uses, i should say.
00:20-!-wk4 [~wk4@2601:940:c202:4400:d8b:ee7e:c2da:815c] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]

00:21-!-DonRichie [~DonRichie@ricl.de] has joined #debian
00:22<storge>lemonman: might i ask what package you needed to unzip? the reason i mention debian has the largest software repo is that for almost everything i need, it's already in repo. i rarely have to unzip or install anything outside of apt.
00:22-!-admin [~chatzilla@89.250.166.65] has joined #debian
00:23<lemonman_>again, please don't laugh... firefox

00:24<storge>the analog in your repo is 'iceweasel'... same software but for branding, as i understand it.
00:25<storge>google chrome -> chromium in open-source repo
00:25<storge>firefox -> iceweasel
00:25<storge>just fyi
00:26<storge>also, the 'please don't laugh' is unnecessary. or should be :) sad reality that someone might laugh. never sweat the small stuff.

00:32<lemonman_>"Warning, you are using root account and may harm your system" - should I be in another account for this? I have a basic user created that I could use instead but I wouldn't be able to use the bash commands without sudo (and I still haven't fully learnt the purpose of that ha)
00:34<storge>i tend to do most things in a user terminal. sometimes i open a terminal, run: sudo -i
00:35<storge>and do root things in there
00:35<acdimalev>Oh, nice!

09:22<duclicsic>bitlan: depends on exactly what you want to achieve
09:23<duclicsic>if it's the bgp peering session you want to be redundant, you should instead establish a session from both servers
09:25<duclicsic>i operate pairs of debian boxes running BIRD that act as gateway routers for all our services, and they run UCARP to present a floating gateway IP that can fail over to the secondary server if the primary drops
09:25<duclicsic>but you'd probably be better with heartbeat or something, ucarp is a bit annoying

21:49<DarkXTC>the violet circle on the left is full and all the processes don't add up to that amount. so it shows me the ram is full (and free also shows me about 50-100mb free) when my system starts to slow to a halt
21:53<DarkXTC>and i know about the buffers/cache thing. but if it where this the kernel should free it and give it to processes that need it instead of slowing down down. so i don't think that's the problem
21:53<petn-randall>DarkXTC: Yes, that's what the kernel does.
21:54<petn-randall>DarkXTC: An easier metric to use is 'atop'. Install it and then let it run as root. Then show us a screen shot.
