00:41<somiaj>Unsure. I doubt there is anything keeping ubuntu from having channels here. Just the ubuntu irc community prefers freenode.

01:31<beatdown>A lot of people frequent the channel on freenode. But I've always liked OFTC much better and I believe Debian's official IRC presense is on OFTC
01:32<twb>beatdown: that is correct
01:33<beatdown>Awesome

01:33<twb>(Some debian channels, e.g. #debian-<lang>, may still be on freenode as their official channel.)

01:50<somiaj>beatdown: the netinstall still contains a minmial base system and doesn't require the network to install.
01:50<somiaj>beatdown: though I suggest installing at least the 'standard system utilities' during the isntall and maybe the 'ssh server'. That is the two I check. after that I isntall the rest with apt

01:52<twb>Incidentally, if you do the install over SSH (by installing network-console udeb), it auto-ticks ssh in tasksel
01:52<beatdown>Definitely, I used to be a minimal setup sort of guy. Switched to XFCE when they made the switch to GTK2 4.0.1 was the first release I used. I'm interesting in installing a bare install on my new rig using pekwm, and mostly terminal applications (I spend so much time in my terminal emulator) a full DE is overkill. Of course, Firefox and Chromium will be present.
01:53<twb>"of course" :P

01:53<beatdown>Yeah, iceweasel. I just say Firefox by habit.
01:54<twb>"FFS, IW" doesn't have the same ring as "FFS, FF"
01:55<beatdown>I remember building the first Mozilla Phoenix builds from CVS because I though the Mozilla Suite (now Seamonkey) was overkill. Then it was Firebird, then finally Firefox.
01:55<beatdown>Are you the same twb from #emacs on freenode?
01:55<twb>Sadly, yes.

Some distros aren't clear about the distincition. Debian is clear, and gives the user choice to use non-free software or not if they want to.

10:34<dpkg>If you have a question, just ask! For example: "I have a problem with ___; I'm running Debian version ___. When I try to do ___ I get the following output ___. I expected it to do ___." Don't ask if you can ask, if anyone uses it, or pick one person to ask. We're all volunteers; make it easy for us to help you. If you don't get an answer try a few hours later or on debian-user@lists.debian.org. See <smart questions><errors>.
10:34<ScMnDak>I'm running Ubuntu with MRTG running. I updated config file and need to restart MRTG to accept new config file.
10:35<chele>!ubuntu
10:35<dpkg>Ubuntu is based on Debian, but it is not Debian. Only Debian is supported on #debian. Use #ubuntu on chat.freenode.net instead. Even if the channel happens to be less helpful, support for distributions other than Debian is offtopic on #debian. See also <based on debian> and <ubuntuirc>.

15:25<pumpernickel>I wonder what people think of apt vs apt-get vs aptitude here.
15:26<pumpernickel>In my experience, aptitude seems to resolve dependencies in a different fashion.
15:26<sney>it does have a different resolver.

15:26<pumpernickel>It seems to be able to resolve issues that the others give up on.
15:26<sney>I tend to use apt for day to day, and aptitude for if I need a clever resolver or some more detailed information
15:26<pumpernickel>Does it do things like mark the packages as hold or something as well?
15:27<pumpernickel>Or are the effects largely dependent on continual use of aptitude.
15:27<pumpernickel>I've used aptitude for exactly that purpose in the past.

I've installed the prereqs (unixodbc-bin, et. al.) but there is no executable 'odbcconfig'executable (updatedb -> locate odbc| grep config). Can anyone help me figure out where to get odbcconfig?

18:02<lfam_>I'm trying to make sure that my Jessie system is patched against the latest glibc bug. The security-tracker page says that it's fixed in 2.19-18+deb8u3. `apt-cache show libc6` says that I have 2.19-19 installed, but that version isn't mentioned on the security-tracker. Should I downgrade?
18:03<__z>trying to update to testing. i did `aptititude safe-upgrade` which went well but with full-upgrade after for some reason it didnt upgrade all the way (connection disconnected to the repo for some reason) and now im getting all this stuff about package conflicts: http://sprunge.us/QGQZ
18:03<__z>what should i do?

18:07<lfam_>sney: Looks like my system is somehow a mutt — It must have been on testing at some point.
18:07-!-infinity0 [~infinity0@0001b9ba.user.oftc.net] has joined #debian
18:07<lfam_>2.19-19 has never been in Jessie AFAICS
18:08<lfam_>Is there a way to say "Please downgrade everything to Jessie?" I know it might break but it's not a critical system
18:09<sney>nope
18:09<sney>downgrade is completely unsupported by apt. you can manually do it with individual packages, but not for the whole system
18:09-!-mtn [~mtn@72.168.161.19] has quit [Quit: Konversation terminated!]
18:09<lfam_>Hm. I guess I'll just take that system offline
18:10<lfam_>And when the fix is in Stretch, fully upgrade to Stretch.
18:10<retrospectacus>you could try apt install libc6=2.19-18+deb8u2 but it probably won't go very well
18:10<lfam_>It would be deb8u3, right?
18:11<lfam_>I think I would save more time if I just replaced that system with another.
18:11<retrospectacus>I'm seeing u2 for jessie. Maybe it isn't fixed yet

23:31<vortek>netinstall cd's always worked before
23:32<EagleRock>same hardware?
23:32<vortek>yes
23:32<Yst>I have a service that needs to bind to a privileged port. I try starting it using "sudo service ngircd restart", but it is unable to bind to that port because it is not running as root. Is there a way that I can allow the service to bind to that port?

23:36<vortek>are there any debian iso's that include wireless firmware and a GUI?

23:38<Yst>nevyn: That is the default IRCS port, as defined in the "ircs" scheme.
23:38<teatime>running service as root is not the same thing as running ngircd as root
23:38<nevyn>so it doesn't work ootb?
23:38<Yst>The "ircs" URI scheme, I mean.

23:39<teatime>Yst: service is a front-end to the various init systems
23:40<teatime>Yst: note, you can give a user the capability to bind privileged ports w/o giving full root access
23:40<Yst>Oh, that would be perfect!
23:41<Yst>How do I do that?
23:41<Yst>Also, is it possible to limit which privileged ports that user can use?

23:49<teatime>yeah, I suppose doing it that way could be a problem if other users can execute the file and shouldn't have the capability.

23:49<teatime>you can have capabilities as a user too, but I'm not sure how to configure that on debian.

23:50<teatime>can you confirm that /usr/sbin/ngircd is a regular file? it should have a - as the first character in ls -l /usr/sbin/ngircd"
23:51<Yst>It said "Note <filename> must be a regular (non-symlink) file.", which I do not know if is related, but I checked on ngircd and that is not a symbolic link.

23:55<teatime>bah, I should have actually read the man page
23:56<Yst>I read the one man page that you mentioned, and it had the capability names in capital letters.
23:56<teatime>how about: set_cap cap_net_bind_service=+pe /usr/sbin/ngircd
23:56<Yst>The caps were spelled in caps, as it were. ☺

23:57<Yst>For my own education, what is "+pe"?
