00:29<Yst>Huh. I told ngIRCd to run as root instead of irc in its configuration, and it downgraded to nobody.
00:29<Yst>I think that the issue is that it is downgrading before binding to a port.
00:29<Yst>will try again to find a way with setcap.

00:45<teatime>btw, did you know that the default IRC ports are actually above the level considered to be privileged ports?

00:46<teatime>I think privileged ports are still those <1024, maybe 4096 but I don't think so.
00:46<teatime>maybe there's some other reason you can't bind, like specifying the wrong addr?
00:46<Yst>The default is client-specific. Some use 9999 by default, others use 6697.
00:46<Yst>WeeChat uses 6667 by default for both encrypted and decyrpted.
00:47<Yst>For the "ircs" URI scheme though, the default is 994.

00:47<teatime>huh, lame

00:49<teatime>194, I guess.
00:49<Yst>I will look that up.
00:49<Yst>Yeah, 194.
00:50<Yst>It was too hard to bind to that though, so they switched it.
00:50<Yst>But people never think that regular users are going to want encryption ...
00:50<teatime>well, putting it in the priv range makes sense

00:51<teatime>not really
00:52<teatime>if for some reason a daemon that is usually running on 6667 was down, for some reason, any user could impersonate it
00:52<teatime>maybe a user that learned a way to crash it
00:52<teatime>admittedly, not many servers that offer an ircd have untrusted local users.
00:52<Yst>Right, which means that it makes sense to put those in the privileges range too so that they can be trusted.

00:54<Yst>I need to learn those bot commands. I was going to go find the ISOs the hard way.
00:54<teatime>Yst: I've been operating under the assumptiong that your ircd is smart enough to bind before dropping root

02:27<abd32>Hello, we tried to move our webpage to a dedicated server (LAMP) recently. Once we have switched the DNS entry and we started to get live traffic (ca. 10 requests per second) the server went down (a small static image that normally takes 0.2s to download - took now ca. 30s). According to `top` the CPU was not overloaded at all, and indeed pages were built pretty fast. The most time was spent waiting for server's response. It looked like the
02:27<abd32>re is a problem either with the network card or with the hard drive. Now I try to reproduce this situation using `ab` but even with 20 parallel requests the system behaves pretty well (small part of the problem was massive logging by appache of the strict standard errors which we have disabled). Do you have any clue what could be wrong and how to identify the issue(s)? Which tools can I use to monitor load on the disc and the network card?
02:27<abd32>Thank you in advance.

02:57<themill>6697 and 9999

03:04<manpreet>but they are all in that range
03:04<themill>teatime: 6697.
03:05<Yst>themill: I am after the default for the scheme so that I can use a URI with no port, so default IRC ports from other documents are not comparable. I do plan to open up those ports also once I get this working though. Supporting as many client defaults as possible would be good.
03:05<themill>On the basis that all of the top 20 irc networks who offer SSL/TLS do so on 6697.
03:05<Yst>I will offer on port 6697 as well, but that does not mean avoiding offering on port 994.
03:05<Yst>The two are not mutually exclusive.
03:06<manpreet>well 6697 you won't run into bind issue
03:06<themill>except that 994 requires privileges
03:06<manpreet>its a non-privileged port
03:06<themill>Yst: anyway, there is no uri scheme and the uri scheme should not be specifying ports anyway as that is the job for something else
03:06<Yst>True. I have mostly worked through the issue at this point though, it would be a waste to give up now.
03:07<manpreet>or use the time someplace else

03:07<manpreet>like maybe authentication

04:45<Geuest91>hi, why i have eno0 instead of eth0?
04:46<tralala>Walex, are these symbols delivered via dbus? I found out that xfce volumed is the one taking care of the volume keys, but I wonder how does it listen for them.
04:46<Walex>Geuest91: it is called the "new style" device naming convention
04:46<Walex>tralala: the X server read the keyboard codes and computes symbols
04:47<Walex>tralala: then any X program can listen for symbols and when a symbol appears can do something related to it.

10:56<grove>I think your best bet is to do a backport yourself
10:57<grove>!ssb
10:57<dpkg>First, check for a backport on <debian-backports>. If unavailable: 1) Add a deb-src line for sid (not a deb line!); ask me about <deb-src sid> 2) enable debian-backports (see <bdo>) 3) aptitude update; aptitude install build-essential; aptitude build-dep packagename; apt-get -b source packagename; 4) install the resultant debs. 11:26<sney>scootergrisen: when you enable backports for jessie, the correct procedure is to use deb, not deb-src. you use deb-src for the sid archive, so you can make your own backports of packages not already backported.
11:26<sney>scootergrisen: you do not want squeeze-backports as they are not intended for jessie. follow the instructions for jessie-backports.

20:54<themill>twb: drupal seems to receive some level of institutional support
20:55<twb>What's the security record like for django ?
20:56<twb>I suspect whatever we use, we'll end up having to do some hacking on the source, and $work is least bad at Python
20:57<themill>django isn't really a thing to compare with drupal or joomla
20:57<twb>I saw it in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_content_management_systems but maybe it's a side project off their generic "web framework" thing

22:25<twb>I bet that second variable does the thing you mean
22:25<twb>As to the hex stuff, do you know how to do hex math?
22:25<twb>if not I can give you a quick overview

22:33<MeatHammer>ok basically i need a hexcode that represents the bitmask 00010001
22:33<MeatHammer>twb ^^
22:34<twb>OK so you need to turn binary into hex?
22:35<twb>Do you have a scientific calculator app handy?

22:50<Yst>MeatHammer: In hexidecimal, that should be 11, I think.
22:50<twb>I normally do it in emacs
22:50<twb>M-: #b10001 RET ---> #x11
22:50<Yst>I think that hexadecimal is basically just a four-bit base.

23:24<lancelot>Hello, i'm trying to install jessie and i get the "select and install software step failed"
23:25<lancelot>Is it possible to continue installation anyway)
23:25<lancelot>?
23:26<twb>lancelot: can you copy-and-paste text out of that computer?
23:26<lancelot>no, different computer and its the installation process, cant copy
23:27<twb>OK this will be a pain
23:27<lancelot>haha
23:27<twb>What we want to know is how far it got before it died
23:27<twb>and how it died
23:27<lancelot>it seem to go 99%
23:27<lancelot>or 100
23:27<twb>If you do Alt+F4, it should switch to the 4th terminal, which has a progress log
23:27<twb>But then you have to read backwards and find the problem which is hard if you're not already an expert
23:28<lancelot>ok, i'll alt f4
23:28<twb>If you choose "Back" you can select an option to export the logs over HTTP
23:28<twb>Then you could browse to them from another cmoputer and pastebin them
23:28<twb>I'm not sure if this is worth it — it might be simpler to just restart the install, and use a more reliable mirror
23:29<lancelot>i think i changed the mirror. I'll try again.Thanks

23:35<lancelot>but dont worry, i'll try tomorrow. Today it took too many hours
