Firmware is required, ask me about <non-free sources> and install the firmware-iwlwifi package to provide. Supported devices are listed at https://wiki.debian.org/iwlwifi . See also <iwlegacy>, <iwl7000>.
02:03<somiaj>it most likely needs that package from nonfree (but not positive, figuring out what firmware failed to load would be the best)

02:03<dpkg>Support of Intel 3945 ABG/BG and 4965 AGN wireless LAN devices was removed from the <iwlwifi> driver at Linux 2.6.39. Firmware is required, ask me about <non-free sources> and install the firmware-iwlwifi package to provide. http://wiki.debian.org/iwlegacy

02:11<rmx77>well the problem is that the thinkpad i have has a whitelisted card set for the internal wireless card slot
02:12<somiaj>I personally use non-free firmware. But I tend to go with user choice (don't like to assume eveyone agrees with using non-free firmware)
02:12<rmx77>true
02:12<rmx77>where would i find it or how would i install it
02:12<somiaj>but anyways, to get that card to work, you now know the package you must install. Choice is yours.
02:12<somiaj>!non-free
02:12<dpkg>[non-free] a component which contains software that does not comply with the <DFSG>. To add non-free packages to your packages index, ask me about <non-free sources>. To see which non-free packages are installed ask me about <non-free list>. For the non-free tracking system, see http://nonfree.alioth.debian.org/

But bear in mind that you'll be installing <non-free> software. These may have onerous terms; check the licenses. See also <sources.list>.
02:13<somiaj>you would first have to add non-free to your souces, then you can just 'apt-get install iwlegacy'

10:11<rincewind>hi, I have a weird issue with xfce4-session - it seems that xfdesktop just stopped starting automatically. XFCE initially gives empty (gray) background. If I run xfdesktop from the terminal it works and it stays. For now I added "xfdesktop &" at the end of ~/.xsessionrc and it seems to be working but it feels quite ugly. I've also tried cleaning ~/.cache/sessions and ~/.config/xfce4, no luck. Any idea what could have gone wrong?

14:55<babilen>xjja: You probably need some form of network manager applet for lxde. Unfortunately I know absolutely nothing about LXDE and can't really help you with that. You would typically use a program called "NetworkManager" to, well, manage your network.

14:56<babilen>Guess it depends on wicd rather than networkmanager then ..
14:56<xjja>this machine has 512MB RAM
14:56<retrospectacus>wicd is ok. You need to specify your wifi ("wlan0" or so) in its preferences is all
14:56<babilen>Well .. as I said, I don't really use LXDE, I'd remove wicd and install network-manager and network-manager-gnome (for nm-applet) and just use that.
14:56<xjja>and gnome did not run well on it

16:56<rincewind>I have a weird issue with xfce4-session - it seems that xfdesktop just stopped starting automatically. XFCE initially gives empty (gray) background. If I run xfdesktop from the terminal it works and it stays. For now I added "xfdesktop &" at the
16:56<rincewind> end of ~/.xsessionrc and it seems to b working but it feels quite ugly. I've also tried cleaning ~/.cache/sessions and ~/.config/xfce4, no luck. Any ide4a what could have gone wrong?

17:59<dpkg>Debian supports two different architectures of ARM processor: <armel> supports processes like the Sheeva/Guru/DreamPlug and Raspberry Pi, while <armhf> supports newer chips. See /proc/cpuinfo for the exact details of your hardware. If «readelf -A /path/to/binary | grep Tag_ABI_VFP» returns anything, then the binary is for armhf, not armel.

19:49<teward>!armel vs armhf
19:49<dpkg>Debian supports two different architectures of ARM processor: <armel> supports processes like the Sheeva/Guru/DreamPlug and Raspberry Pi, while <armhf> supports newer chips. See /proc/cpuinfo for the exact details of your hardware. If «readelf -A /path/to/binary | grep Tag_ABI_VFP» returns anything, then the binary is for armhf, not armel.

21:50<lancelot>Yes.
21:51<lancelot>Because i have dual boot, and repair mode is an option
21:51<twb>Ah OK. This must be a new name that I'm not used to because I do that bit in a weird way :-)
21:51<lancelot>sorry, recovery mode
21:51<twb>ahhh
21:51<lancelot>So, as dmesg suggest, i should change the module parameter, but i don't know how.
21:51<twb>Do you know how to use SSH, and have another computer to SSH in from?
21:52<lancelot>I'm a bit noob with ssh, but i can try.
21:52<twb>OK after just trying the option it suggested, the next step will be to run some commands like "lspci -nn" and collect the output -- this is easier to do over SSH because you can copy-and-paste
21:53<twb>also it means you can do it even when the graphics is not working, as long as the network part is working, so you can debug it without waiting for reboots
21:53<lancelot>ok, how do i change the module parameter?
21:53<twb>re the module option, this must be passed from the bootloader (probably grub) to the kernel
21:53<twb>I think you are prompted to do this where you picked recovery mode
21:54<twb>I think it is the 'e' key, then use arrows to find the longest line, which will have things like initrd= and root= on it, and add the parameter to that same line
21:54<lancelot>I think the problem is nouveau and nvidia drivers are loaded.
21:54<twb>I don't know. If this is a fresh install, you (probably) won't have nvidia non-free drivers yet

22:09<twb>Reboot again into recovery mode, and install openssh-server, so you can SSH in
22:10<lancelot>ok, i just rebooted to type exactly what the error is.
22:10<twb>(If you're on an untrusted network, we should also lock down SSH.)
22:11<lancelot>Rebooting into recovery mode. I must connect to wifi first. A bit difficult to me.
22:11<lancelot>No recovery mode...hahha, getting worst.
22:12<twb>I'm confused. The recovery option did not appear?
22:12<lancelot>I ll just delete that grub entry.
22:12<lancelot>didnt appear.
22:12<twb>That is weird
22:12<twb>Anyway I think the next step is to boot normally, SSH in, and see if we can e.g. restart X
22:13<twb>And see what Xorg.0.log says
22:13<twb>Also to look at lspci -nn to work out exactly which graphics card you have
22:14<lancelot>ok.Maybe i should try to get a command line from grub.It is an option.
22:14<lancelot>BEcause ctrl alt f2 f6 doesnt work
22:15<lancelot>I only have the grub command line. It supports minimal bash like editing.

22:20<twb>oh, maybe
22:20<twb>if so you'd have to put it as an option to the module you'er actually loading
22:21<twb>like this: http://sprunge.us/bgUB
22:21<lancelot>I cant even do that. I have no command line except for grub's

22:22<twb>You need to work out what happened to recovery mode
22:22<twb>Or we can try to make our own recovery mode. It is PROBABLY the same as adding the option "single" to the initrd= line
22:22<lancelot>it dissapeared after including the allowduplicates line in the grub. But after re entering the grub menu, the line was gone.
22:23<twb>yeah I don't understand why that would happen
22:23<lancelot>I think i'm going for reinstall.

22:23<twb>>shrug< I doubt that will help, but it's your call :-)
22:23<teatime>it sounds like you edited the grub command in grub
22:23<teatime>rather than in the config file grub loads at boot time

22:23<lancelot>Just to understand what could go wrong. At installation, i think i included the non free firmware, and im sure i included the gnome and KDE desktops...
22:24<twb>teatime: yes, because I only wanted to edit it for one (test) boot
22:24<teatime>ok, well, obviously that explains why it wasn't persistent
22:24<lancelot>Thats why i saw both nouveau and nvidia drivers.
22:25<lancelot>in lspci, nvidia, in dmesg, noveau
